As late as like 2010 was when people weren't looking down at their phones a lot IMO although I think that's already kind of pushing it for some reason

The 2007 photos look somewhat connected to today.  This looks like almost another world.  It's closer to the early '00s in culture than it is 2009. I guess this shows why we talk about a late 2006 shift.  Maybe there was a bigger difference between '05 and '07 than a lot of people think.

2007 seems like a tiny bit more connected to the late 2000s culture but still DATED

This reminds me of my hellish middle school years haha. But that Fall Out Boy concert pic is whack even by 2005 standards.

I agree. The Summer 2005 photos do look very dated, very different to today. The 2007 photos however, while still dated, not as much.

What I do remember though is 2009 being vastly different from both of these years.

Great year. Graduated from high school, and started college that summer. Politics began to turn liberal for me as I turned against George W. Bush over the Iraq War and then the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Before YouTube, before I started using MySpace, before I even had a broadband connection. Those days truly seem dated.

I just got back from the 2007 photo thread, and these pictures look even more dated and otherwordly!  :o 2005 was a great year, I was 10 years old and moved cities this year so it was a changeful year for me. I look at 2005 as the last classic 2000s year, when '00s culture was at its peak. It is super old and dated now, things were very different in 2005 compared to today. A lot of people are saying 2007 is connected to today but honestly '07 is dated too... Not as dated as 2005 but pretty close. I think 2008 is the last year that has a connection/relevance to today. Everything from late 2008 onwards feels relatively modern (still dated in some aspects but overall the same modern feel as today).

I think the reason for this is because of technological breakthroughs. The culture itself wasn't drastically different but the technology has advanced quite a bit in 2006 so that's the reason it looks more modern as the resolution was higher. The resolution of the photos is much higher in 2007 than in 2005 so it gives it a modern feel, even though I think the content of the photos was still very dated in 2007 despite the resolution being higher and the technology being more advanced.

I owned more than one studded belt from Hot Topic or Spencer's and places like that. They didn't bother me back then, now I think they're uncomfortable to sit down with.

I always thought of 2005-2008 as the same period (at least late 2005 to about mid 2008). When it was 2005 I remember the vibe started to feel different, a lot different from 2002, 2003, and even 2004. Of course 2006 brought some changes and even more in 2007, but I didn't see a Late 2006 shift that a lot of people on here mention, at least not in California where I was living at the time, which tends to be ahead of its time.

Some of those pics look like they were taken by an analog camera. I remember 2005 was when I got my first digital camera, right before my trip to Europe (best memory of 2005). Before that I was buying disposable "digital" cameras where you get a CD with the jpg images in addition to the prints when you get them developed, so I could upload them to MySpace without needing a scanner. I do remember cell phones first started to have video capabilities, as well as that gen of iPods. I still had my LG flip phone from 2003.

Overall, I really enjoyed 2005. If it's dated in any way it's a good nostalgic way and not a "what were we thinking? That was actually cool?" kind of way. I would love to be 26 again.

That's interesting, because I also got my first digital camera on my birthday in February 2005 and also took a trip to London in March of that year. That was actually my second time visiting the city, my first was in 1998. The city changed A LOT in those 7 years. Way more cellphones and way more traffic. There were also buildings like the Eggcup and a couple of other buildings at Canary Wharf that didn't exist 7 years before but are now an iconic part of London's skyline.

I didn't have a cellphone, but my brother won a phone at a supermarket scratch off, lucky bastard. It was a Samsung flipphone with a camera. Those were starting really common back then. I think it was in 2003 when I first toyed with a camera flip phone that belonged to my cousin and it was very nouvel, but in 2005 that was very ordinary. There were Nokia brick phones around too of course but they were starting to show their age.

I agree with you that late 2005 was very high tech compared to before. PSPs, iPods, digital cameras, laptops, WiFi, social media, Web 2.0, premium cable, Wikipedia, DVD/digital download (anyone remember Rapidshare and Limewire?) were all ubiquitous by then. A lot of those existed in 2003 and 2004, but 2005 was when they became staples.

However, my London hotel did not have WiFi. I was without Internet for my entire vacation, all I did with my laptop was play SimCity 4. That's just how it was back then haha. That makes 2005 seem a bit quaint. ;D

When I visit Cuba I go without the internet for a week even today. It's actually not that bad because I'm busy doing vacation stuff so I didn't even miss the internet that much.

Tragic! How will your Instagram followers know you party and drink 24/7 and that Cuba is #lit #af this time of year without your 20 daily selfies with you making the same pose with only the background changed? :o
