Where do you get these photos from? I know you get them from imgur, but do you just use other people's photos?  ???

Some of those pics remind me of my pics from my trip to NYC, which I took with a disposable camera and scanned them to a floppy 💾. I was wearing a gray Abercrombie and Fitch T-shirt. Neutral colors such as gray and tan were in that time. In the party pics with the Solo cups I imagine music by Sum 41 or Jimmy Eat World playing in the background. One thing I remember about summer of 2002 is the original Spiderman with Toby Maguire. Since then the series has been rebooted not once but twice.

I agree. 2002 was part of a different era (2001-2004). 2002 is almost 16 years ago, which in fact means it's going to be the throwback year of 2018 :)

I first heard of Avril Lavigne in June of 2002. I can't believe that Avril was only 17 years old at that time! So young. She turned 18 later in the year.

Damn these pics are super nostalgic. To continue the spirit of the awesomeness of 2002, I came across this old recording of these winter 2002 episodes of Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Who Wants to be a Millionaire?.

Notice the dated commercials, the dated clothing, the archaic video quality, the more 'traditional' set up for the game shows (in contrast to the modern aesthetic of today), etc. This is clearly 15 years ago!

Also, it is pretty eerie how the Wheel of Fortune episode was based in New Orleans, a few years before Hurricane Katrina. From what I've heard, the city was very well maintained, clean, and invigorating. The city is still like that from what I've heard, but the Katrina (and the controversial politics surrounding it) has definitely put a stain on the city.

Great summer. For me, that was after my freshman year of high school and before starting my sophomore year.

For comparison, here was what an average summer 2002 day was like for teenager back then.

Get up and wait for my mom to get off the computer so I could log on.
Spend 5 minutes waiting for the dial-up to get connected.
Go to my e-mail account and see if anybody sent me a message.
Log on to Yahoo Messenger and see if any anybody else was online.
Have somebody try to call my mom and get knocked off-line.
Call up my buddies and see if anybody was hanging out downtown.
Head downtown by bike or have my mom drop me off.
Walk around town hanging out for a few hours, probably drop by the video store and see what new games or DVDs they have.
Stop by another kid's house and call my mom to tell her when I'm coming back, since we don't have mobile phones.
Watch TRL and complain about what didn't make the top 10.
Get the PlayStation 2 going and play a couple hours of Grand Theft Auto III.

The early '00s are much more nostalgic than I thought they would be a couple years ago. I guess because there's been so many changes over the last several years.

A day in my life in the summer of 2002

Wake up
Play Super Smash Bros. Melee
Answer door for friends who want to play Super Smash Bros. Melee
Go back to playing Super Smash Bros. Melee
Eat dinner
Go back to playing Super Smash Bros. Melee
Get dragged out kicking and screaming by mom to go to sleep
Go to sleep dreaming about Super Smash Bros. Melee

That's life.  8)

Just kidding lol. I was on vacation that summer, no Smash for me.  :\'(

Accurate. Although for me my 2002 summer still included me playing Dream cast games like Sonic adventure 2. And PS2 games like Jak and daxter.

Well, 9/11/01 was the beginning of that era. That single event was big enough to cause a cultural shift. Even before, it started to feel a little bit like a new era with GWB in office instead of Bill Clinton, much like 2017 with Donald Trump instead of Obama.

No, it wasn't. 2002 was the first full post-9/11 year, making it the first year to
the second part to the early 2000s.

Even before, it started to feel a little bit like a new era with GWB in office instead of Bill Clinton

One could say the same thing about George HW Bush being in office in '89. 1989 was not a part of the Bush '90s (early '90s) and it is not classified as a Bush '90s year. 2001, from start to finish, was the last year of the Y2K era, a time of many horrifying events.

much like 2017 with Donald Trump instead of Obama.

That's different. This is a new era we're living in (the late '10s). The 2000s were one long transition period from the Clinton days to the early Obama days. With the 2010s, there is not an in-between period.

2002 may have been the first FULL post-9/11 year, but the last few months of 2001 goes together with 2002.

I played Sunshine, Sonic and GTA that year as well! :D All great games.

Although, I felt 2002 was a bit of a downgrade compared to 2001 in gaming.  :-X

I'm sorry, but I fail to see how the last few months of '01 go with 2002. The early Bush 2000s (or as I call them, the early 2000s  2.0) were still being formed at that point. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone came out that November, whereas the first sequels were introduced in the second part of the early 2000s (2002-2004). That fact alone separates the two periods for me.

'89 was not that terribly different from the two years that came before it. HW Bush was in office from January 20th to the rest of the year, but we were not too removed from the Reagan '80s until the end of that December.

Actually the first Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings is evidence that the Fall of 2001 fits with the 2002-2004 period.

We were getting closer to the 2002-2004 period by New Year's Day, but '01 was still the last year of the Y2K era. In late 2001, moviegoers were introduced to Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, whereas in the 2002-2004 period, they had something to compare the new sequels to. The whole 2002-2004 period was the aftermath of the 1999-2001 era.

I agree.  Pre-9/11 2001 was very much a Y2K-era culture.  I remember that from the perspective of early 2001, I couldn't tell a lot of different from 1998.  There was some, such as goth culture being less prominent and hip-hop rising in mainstream popularity, but overall, it was still a similar culture.  It changed a bit when Bush went into office but it took 9/11 to end that era.  After 9/11, we abruptly shifted into core '00s culture.  I personally feel that the early '00s evolved into the mid '00s so slowly that it's difficult to set an exact date when the early '00s were over and the mid '00s began.  The next significant change in culture would come in late '05, after Hurricane Katrina.

Aside from a few precursors, 1989 was pretty much dominated by typical 80's culture.

Not sure about you guys but as a kid, I still remember seeing the Y2K futuristic style/feel until about mid 2004. Maybe my family wasn't rich enough to be on-time.

And the '80s changed a bit after the Berlin Wall came down, but it was not the end of an era. Same thing with September 11th and the Y2K era.
Y2K era television shows (i.e.- Ally McBeal, Felicity, and the first Pokemon series) were on the air and early W. Bush 2000s (2002-2004) culture (i.e.- Alias, Justice League cartoon, Star Trek Enterprise, ) was still being introduced days after September 11th. So, as far as I'm concerned, 2002 was the first full post-9/11 year (the first full early W. Bush 2000s year). Y2K era culture was on its way out as mid '00s culture (i.e.-The Wire,The O.C., and Boston Legal) was being launched in the 2002 to 2004 period. Then, on January 3rd of 2005, Craig Ferguson became the host of The Late Late Show and we were in the mid 2000s (2005-2007). That's how I see it, but it's all in the eyes of the beholder I guess.

2002 was definitely a different time. What a great year. This is a classic 2000s year and a great representation of the decade. It's strange, I still remember 2002 very clearly so it is really freaky to me how dated it looks on video. As if it's truly from a time I wasn't around, only I was a kid then and I clearly remember it. Despite my dreamy memories, I still can't believe just how old it looks from these videos. It's crazy how the passage of time works.

2002 was actually one of my favourite years of my entire life. I have the most awesome childhood memories all from 2002. This is probably my third favourite year ever after 2007 and 2013. Man 2002 was just so awesome and I would do anything to go back. OP, please get started on Summer 2000. I will be waiting.  8)

Y2K died when 9/11 happened. Y2K is a short mini era around the millennium new year and it did not last that long (1999 - 2001). The early 2000s were 2000 - 2002 (or up until mid 2003 imo). But Y2K most definitely didn't go up until 2004 and I didn't see that futurustic vibe in '04. '04 had that punky and edgy mid '00s feel while Y2K was more cheesy.
