Subject: Early-to-mid 00s girl pop/rock

Written By: XYkid on 01/06/18 at 12:04 pm

Not long after the bubblegum teen pop era of the Y2K era, more female singer-songwriters began popping up, creating this hybrid sound of 90s grrrl rock and teen pop. This era produced some of my all time favourite idols, including Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, and Skye Sweetnam, who all still make music today despite being less known. I just love how this kind of music has a very upbeat and sunshine vibe while still maintaining that girl power edge.

^ Of those clips you posted, Liz Phair's "Why Can't I" (2003) is the one I remember best. Wow, fifteen years ago already! :o

In fact, I remember lots of songs of this nature by female musicians around that time... a number of which I favored.

I always thought the bubblegum era in pop music was 1967 to 1972?

I guess that term was also used in the early 2000s... although I don't remember it being applied then.

Further research is needed.

I always liked Skye Sweetnam. She's part of a band now called Sumo Cyco, which is more locally known in the Toronto area, but has a big fanbase on social media. I'm hoping Vanessa Carlton will come out with another hit song like "1000 Miles", with a simplistic sound. Don't forget Avril Lavigne, she was big that time too.

Sumo Cyco is an amazing band, I'm so thrilled she became a metal Singer. I actually saw them open for Birthday Massacre in Seattle last summer. while I was there, I got to meet Skye, she is so nice in person.
Vanessa Carlton's new music is awesome actually, she's really grown a lot as an artist.
I like Avril too, her 2nd album was my favourite, most of her stuff since her 3rd album has been hit or miss with me though.

Interestingly, of all the examples you posted, this is the only one I had ever heard of until now. And how can we forget:

HLCasyAh7ic

^^^ This song, in my opinion, was the single best song of the whole girl pop rock fad. That soaring chorus gets me every time.

I met Skye once too, a while back at Sea World in San Diego. Yes, she was nice in person. She let me take my picture with her, and I sent her a copy with the fan mail, and she replied saying she remembers meeting me.

My favourite of this era is Ashlee Simpson's "Pieces of Me", if that counts.

Her debut album and Michelle's first two albums are my number ones of this era. It's just kinda embarrassing to admit I love Ashlee Simpson's music. But her album and reality show were really good.

I think it does. I find that one catchy.

Autobiography was actually a pretty fun album, I loved how raw a lot of the songs felt.
And I don't think she's as bad of a singer as people say.

As a singer, she is very hit or miss for me. She has had some decent performances but even more terrible ones from what I've seen. IMO she is definitely a better artist than her sister. Autobiography sold more albums than her sisters as well.
