Subject: How many early Gen Z's have Gen alpha siblings?

Written By: Frank998 on 02/14/18 at 6:17 pm

I'm a Gen z born in '02 and I also have a brother born in 2007, he is a late gen z and a sister born in 2011 who is a possibly a gen alpha. Gen Alpha are the current new generation and when it starts is debateable. Just wondering how many early Gen z's have Gen alpha siblings?

Depends on who you refer to when you say Gen Z as the start/end years differ between people.

Gen Z has barely been defined, let alone Gen Alpha. It will probably take a few decades ultil both generations are fully past their early teenage years to actually define them.

I HATE this generation thing anyway, just a bunch of labelling based on stereotypes and sweeping generalizations. The only generation that is undisputable are the Baby Boomers because you can SEE that gen on a demographic chart. Any gen prior was defined afterwards based on historical events (WWI, Great Depression, ...), while the gens after mostly on Pop culture. Gen X for instance was coined when the Baby Boomers started to feel alienated from the youth culture, and the same happened later with Gen X and Millenials, although no one seem to agree on the cutoff years. The Millenial-Gen Z cutoff being the worst offender as the disagreement spans over a freaking decade (1994-2004).

Make no sense to me to already talk about a Gen Alpha already.

My parents are Gen X. Me and my siblings were born from 1995 to 2005, we are Gen Z, but my cousins are Gen Y and they're raising Gen Alpha.

I'm the youngest in my family, so I don't have any gen alpha siblings, and like other people said they're still debating on where it starts and ends.

It spans more than a whole decade.

About fifteen years ago, some people would end Millennials at 1989.

The latest date that you'd see as the end of Millennials is 2004.

Gen Alpha exists? News to me. Most people refer to all young people as millennials these days and even Gen Z isn't officially and agreeably defined of when the generation started and ended (some say mid '90s other say early 2000s, and others don't know). I consider myself a millennial but a lot of people disagree with that and say if you are born in 1995 you are Gen Z and New Years Eve 1994 is the cutoff for whatever reason. Anyways if Gen Z isn't even defined I don't know how Gen Alpha even exists yet. The next generation will probably be born in the 2020s I would say.

Apparently Gen Z kids were born between 1995 and 2012 and Gen Alpha kids are born between 2013 and 2025 which makes sense.

Not really. If you end Millenials on 1995, that means I guess gen X ends in 1977. Meaning:

Baby Boomers (1946-1964): 18 years
Gen X (1965-1977): 12
Millenial (1978-1994): 16
Gen Z (1995-2012): 17

Making Gen X a very short generation.
Makes more sense to me to follow the 18 years rule set the Baby Boomers.

Baby Boomers (1946-1964): 18
Gen X (1965-1983): 18
Millenial (1984-2002): 18
Gen Z (2003-2021): 18

Meaning Gen Alpha have yet to be born:
Gen Alpha (2022-2040): 18

I've seen many sources end Generation Z sometime in the early 2010's. It usually ranges from 2010-2012. I would say 2010 borns are a Generation Z/Alpha cusp leaning Z, with 2011 borns being exactly 50/50, and 2012 leaning towards alpha. 2013 is an early Alpha IMO.

The way I learned it was:

Baby Boomers - 1945-1964
Gen X - 1965-1981
Millennials - 1982-1995
Gen Z - 1996-2009
Gen Alpha - 2010-present

The numbering doesn't have to "make sense." What matters is who's having kids when. Gen X begins in 1965 because that's - theoretically - one of the earliest points where Baby Boomers would be having kids. Millennials start in 1982 because the younger Baby Boomers may have Gen X kids but those Gen X kids would have Millennial siblings. Gen Alpha begins when it does because they're the kids of the oldest Millennials.

It's a generation related thread. Always gonna happen because of arbitrary opinions with no strong reasoning.

On-topic thanks to my new baby bro (COUGH THANKS, MOM COUGH  >:()  I now have maybe 4-5 Gen Alpha siblings depending on when you start Gen Alpha.

Now how the hell do you go from a few millennial, to a few Z, to a handful of Alphas? ...Err.., natural reproduction maybe?  ???

Now if you were to get all of us together and compare how are lives would be growing up you'd find yourself with one interesting experiment. You have myself who'd remember the Disney Renaissance while some younger siblings would remember the Post-Renaissance while some even younger siblings would remember the Disney Revival while the infant/toddlers  may not remember the Disney revival at all. We'd all be talking about our favorite Disney movies and you'd hear maybe 25 titles pop up.

If I ever wanted to compare the differents in pop culture I can just look at my siblings and compare them to my other siblings now. THANKS, MOM!

How do you figure?

Because 1995 & 1996 babies are 99% the same, my brother was born in early 1995, was held back, and made friends with 1996 borns, I can't see any differences between them, I don't agree with starting Gen Z at 1996.

It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. All this does is just derail the thread into a "No, I'm Gen whatever"/"The cutoff date doesn't seem right" thread that we've been seeing on forums for a few years now.

A '96 baby ain't too different from a '95 baby which isn't too different from a '94 baby which isn't different from a '93 ba- you get the idea. These arguments prove nothing and just get repeated with no one agreeing on anything.

The mainstream doesn't understand how generations go anymore "MILLENNIALS ARE DUMB MILLENNIALS ARE DUMB!" and they are talking about 2000's born's in that range too. Wait a minute. Are early 80's born's also millennials along with 00's born's? No way in hell that works. A generation CANNOT last for over 20 years. TBH the max all generations should go is 15 years. Anyway. Here's how I believe it really goes (if you combine everybody's opinion together).

Baby Boomers (1945-1964)
Early Boomers (1945-1954)
Late Boomers or Generation Jones (1955-1964)

Generation X (1965-1979)

Generation Y/Millennials (1980-1999)
Generation Y (1980-1989)
Millennials (1990-1999)

Generation Z (2000-2014?)

Using the 15 year rule for generations. If Gen X starts in 1965, then Gen Z must start in 1995. Therefore, if Gen Y starts in 1980, then Gen Alpha must start in 2010. Age 30 is the average age parents have children. 2 generations ahead. Plus, 30 years is usually a generation in society as well. 1988 was a generation ago. 2003 was half a generation ago, cause it's 2018 now. Baby Boomers gave birth to Gen Y/Millennials. Gen X gave birth to Gen Z. Gen Y is now having Gen Alpha, etc.

Here is what Strauss and Howe says

1925-1942 = Silent
1943-1960 = Boomer
1961-1981 = Xer
1982-2004 = Millennial

I think 1961-1964 can be Boomer or Xer depending on the person

THIS!!!
I wholeheartedly agree. As a matter of fact, this whole generation thing is actually just something that journalists are making up to make money off of web pages and magazines. Strauss and Howe got rich that way when they coined the term "Millennial". There's actually a very interesting video on YouTube made by gentleman Adam Conover that accurately describes this whole generation thing, it's called "Millennials Don't Exist! Adam Conover at Deep Shift."

Also, it seems that the reason that these generation debates are an issue on here is because seemingly, those born in the mid-late 90s have still not gotten over the childish mentality of what I call, "I want to sit at the big kids table, not at the little kids table!".
I think some of them may have this slight irrational fear that accepting the Z label will mean they'll have to force themselves to associate with younger people and distance themselves from older people. Either way though, this mentality needs to stop, as they are in their 20s or very late teens now, and generations don't truly exist, so essentially they're being chased by ghosts that aren't even there.

Exactly. Isn't it better to lead Gen Z than follow Gen Y? The oldest members of a generation defy it the most and pave the way for the younger ones.

That may be true, but I think the generations thing began long before it was all about money. There were articles about the Lost generations who felt hopeless thinking if they were optimistic again since they returned home after fighting WW1.

It's the same thing with the older Millennials as well. They rather hang with older folks than anyone much younger than them They forget that the younger ones are not in high school (or even college) anymore and most of them already have jobs/careers and rent homes/apartments or live with roommates. Some of them are even married and have families to raise.

I don't have Alpha siblings but I have alpha cousins. They were born between 2010-2016. My brother was born in 2006

It's the same thing for me as well. I have a baby cousin that was born in July 2017. She's 7 months old now. :P

My siblings are late millennials.

Aww, that's adorable.
I am the oldest in my family. My brother and I belong to Generation Z. I have millennial cousins born in the early 90's

Exactly. Isn't it better to lead Gen Z than follow Gen Y? The oldest members of a generation defy it the most and pave the way for the younger ones.

Personally, as someone born end of '97, I don't want to be considered either a leader of Gen Z nor a follower of Gen Y.
I don't want any arbitrary label to define me, no one should.
Anyone who embraces a generation label is an imbecile, if you ask me. Generation labels are typically used as derogatory slangs to stereotype and patronize younger or older people. If you were born in any year, you should reject any generation label, and be your own person.

I agree 100% with you man. Generations are a BS excuse to distance yourself from people younger and act like an elitist. It’s hilarious when people take generations so seriously.

There are people who say I'm undeniably Z and can never be a millennial just cause I was born after 9/11. ::) It's one of the most bullsh!t things I've ever heard.

I don't understand the fight to be labeled a millennial though. People put us down constantly. If I were you I would go ahead and run with the Gen Z label. Apparently people have good things to say about you.

I agree. I'm fine with being Generation Z and I like it, but it's like people shove it down your throat when they say you're undeniably Z.

And then they say that 2001 borns are the last Y/Z cusp because they technically "existed" in the 20th century by being in their mother's womb. ::)
Like, give me a break. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

What the hell seriously? ::) I was born in 2001 but I was conceived March 2001. My advice: If you find out the person who said this, tell them to stay the hell away from generational topics please ;D

Might seem silly, but I've seen this growing trend of wishing to be part of the 20th century or something like that on the internet lately. I mean why the heck would it matter :o

I honestly haven't noticed it, to be honest. Being apart of the 20th century doesn't make one a god or something.

I mean yeah, just be happy you're alive or atleast not alive in horrible times like the middle ages, or the early part of the 20th century for that matter ;D
