Subject: 1999 vs 2000

Written By: bchris02 on 03/09/18 at 12:04 am

Do you generally think of these two years as the same or do they have different feels to them?  If so, what do you think was different about 2000 compared with 1999?

1999 and 2000 were quite different from each other.  The 1999-2000 school year was a very changeful one.  The 1998-99 school year still had a strong '90s vibe to it and the 2000-01 school year was a very "00s" school year.  In early 1999 JNCOs and bowl cuts were still popular.  By the end of 2000 it was pretty much all Abercrombie & Fitch and cargo pants.  The clean-cut preppy look that would remain at least fashionable throughout the decade had arrived.  1999 seemed like a darker year than 2000.  A big part of this, in my opinion, was the Columbine shooting.  As for music, I would say pop was pretty much the same in both years but hip-hop and rock saw small changes, enough to notice.  So what are your thoughts?

Damn, this is a tough question to answer. I'm trying to think how different 2000 was compared to 1999, but not much comes to my mind since both years were similar and intertwined with one another. A few things I did think about was video games and the kids' fads of that time. In 2000, the Dreamcast was a hot selling item whereas, in 1999, it wasn't because it was barely released that year. In 1999 however, Power Rangers and Pokemon were concurrent with each other, but by 2000, the former was nowhere to be found.

I think the biggest difference was the 2001-02 school year, not 2000-01. That's literally when the late 90s boy band craze completely died out. Not to mention the whole spirit of the late 90s totally crushed on 9/11. Abercrombie & Fitch and cargo pants were popular before the 90s ended, at least in my area. Musically, there was very little to distinguish 2000 from 1999. You're right that they aren't exactly the same, but the change is so minuscule in the grand scheme of things. Looking back, it seems like the 1998-99 school year had the biggest change from prior years and in many ways was its own mini-era called the "Y2K 90s," which lasted up until fall of 2001. Scooters were becoming more popular than roller blades and if I recall, the skateboard came back in popularity. Bowl cuts were definitely beginning to decline by then.

The Columbine shooting happened in the 1998-99 school year.
