I thought it was an upgrade than what PS2 had. The PS3 has more things to discover including new apps and an internet search.

Actually, the shift happened in Late 2004 / Early 2005.
That's when broadband adoption rates surpassed dial up's, and when devices such as the Razr, DS, and PSP came out.
Plus, the PSP was in many ways like a smart device, it had a lot of the same features as a smartphone.

The next shift happened in Late 2007, when LCD TVs surpassed CRTs, when major 7th Gen releases such as COD4 came out, and with the Recession that started in December 2007.

I'm honestly failing to see what "shift" these pictures are supposed to prove. Most of them are just people, stores, technology (which I still don't see a big difference) and someone hugging the PS3 (which I don't understand how that's supposedly a "shift").

Not to be or sound rude, but I don't get the point of this thread.

In March 2005 (even 2004 in Japan), Sony released the PSP, which was a 7th Gen handheld that had many of the same features as a smart device.

Both 2005 and 2007 had a way bigger shift than 2006 did, both in terms of statistics and release dates.

The psp was huge when it came out however, it was not until ps3 and wii came out that the new gen had fully arrived leaving the ps2 and Xbox 1 and GC  in the dust

I had a psp and used its crap browser all the time

2006 is also when Disney refocused the network to Miley Cyrus and High school musical, Music got more pop as well due to Timbaland dominating , WB and UPN ended and the CW was born, That 70's show ended, Malcolm in the Middle ended,  MTV's TRL started tanking in December of 2006 signaling talk of canceling the show (but would not happen until 2008)  Facebook also became public in Aug of that year, Blackberry Pearl debuted and made a huge splash in the smartphone world even before the Iphone's debut in 2007 (altho Iphone would be a huger deal) Helio was another type of smart device but it did not make such a splash

The whole thing of Britney going crazy actually started in Nov 2006 when she and K-fed broke up, JETIX also left Abc Family in 2006.
Windows Vista had arrived in a pre-release in Nov 2006 and everyone hated it and people were forced to use it until 2009 unless you had XP

2006 was also the year Blue Ray discs were a huge, it was like the new thing, CRT's started leaving the second half of 2006 and being fully gone by 2007

WWE came out with it's new HD RAW logo in late 2006 along with new music from Paparoach (The HD set would not come out until 2008)
ECW became a third brand in 2006

2006 is also the year channels like HBO and Cinemax went HD

I see what you're saying, and am not doubting you, but still, this whole notion of the "2006 shift" is heavily exaggerated on this forum. Every year of the 00s had something of a technological, social, or political pivot or breakthrough, 2006 is not exceptional. In fact, the years that seemed to have had the biggest shifts in this regard are the years divisible by 3, which are 2001, 2004, and 2007.

2001
- George W. Bush takes office
- 9/11, War on Terror begins
- iPod comes out
- Windows XP comes out
- GameCube and Xbox come out
- Major 6th gen releases such as Grand Theft Auto III, Halo: Combat Evolved, and Super Smash Bros. Melee come out
- Major movie series such as Harry Potter, Fast & The Furious, Lord of the Rings, and Shrek make their debut
- Mainstream music gets edgier, Y2K teen pop starts dying out

2004
- Broadband adoption rates surpass dial up's
- Motorola releases the Razr
- Nintendo DS comes out, Sony PSP unveiled at E3 and released in Japan
- Satellite Radio reaches a million subscribers
- Friends is cancelled, as are a bunch of other TV shows
- American Idiot comes out, the goth-emo subculture explodes
- Janet Jackson Nipple Slip
- Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty popularize the term "Web 2.0"

2007
- iPhone, Kindle come out
- LCD TVs surpass CRT TVs in unit share
- Major 7th Gen releases such as Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare come out
- T-Pain popularizes Auto-Tune
- Transformers series makes its debut
- Last Harry Potter book comes out
- iCarly debuts, while Drake & Josh, Ned's Declassified, Unfabulous, Danny Phantom get cancelled
- Viral sensations such as Rick Roll, Charlie Bit My Finger, Chocolate Rain, Keyboard Cat, Dramatic Look come out
- Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton campaigning for the presidency, to be either the first black or first woman president
- Nancy Pelosi becomes first female speaker of Congress
- Recession starts December 2007

As stated before, every year of the 00s was pivotal, speaking both statistically and from memory. 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, and dare I say 2006 also had some notable or major technological, political, or social breakthroughs or pivots, the 00s was a way more transitional decade than either of its bordering decades were.

However, for the reasons I pointed out in that post, the years that seemed the most pivotal out of all of them were 2001, 2004, and 2007.
Those three years seem to be the most relevant years of the 00s.

I know I can look up pivotal on Google and I did, but when you say "pivotal years" do you mean the most important years?

Yes, the years with the biggest political, technological, and/or social transitions and breakthroughs.

Also, I didn't include 2011 because I was talking about the 00s, not the 10s.

Throughout many decades up until today, the years ending in "1", "4", and "7" tend to be among the most pivotal years of that decade, not always THE most, but they tend to be one of the most.
Years that are big examples of this are 1914 (WWI), 1917 (US enters WWI), 1927 (The Jazz Singer), 1937 (Snow White), 1941 (US enters WWII), 1964 (British Invasion), 1967 (Summer of Love), 1974 (Nixon resignation), 1977 (Star Wars), 1981 (MTV debut), 1984 (MTV begins Music Awards), 1987 (Berlin Wall speech), 1991 (USSR Collapse and Grunge), 1994 (Cobain death), 1997 (Diana death), as well as for everything I aforementioned, 2001, 2004, and 2007. Plus 2011, 2014, and 2017 are definitely very pivotal years of the 10s.

The best examples of this are 1914, 1917, 1927, 1941, 1964, 1967, 1974, 1977, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2014, and 2017 definitely.

Wait a minute. You're saying that "the years that seemed to have had the biggest shifts in this regard are the years divisible by 3, which are 2001, 2004, and 2007." but then you also said "the years ending in "1", "4", and "7" tend to be among the most pivotal years of that decade, not always THE most, but they tend to be one of the most." but going by the 3-year sequence theory of yours, not all years following that sequence will end in those numbers. So I'm a bit confused by what you're saying.

My statement about 2001, 2004, and 2007 all being divisible by 3 earlier was just something they had in common as 00s years, I didn't say at all that this trend goes either backwards through 1998 or forwards through 2010.
I was speaking solely about the 00s, that the most pivotal years of the 00s are the ones divisible by 3, not the most pivotal years for every decade, just the 00s.

So you're just talking about the 2000's. Would the "years that end in 1, 4 and 7 tend to be the most pivotal" statement be true for the 2010's?

Yeah, I'd say so.
In 2011, you had the Arab Spring, Muammar Gadaffi being overthrown, and the beginning of the Syrian Civil War.
In 2014, you had Russia annex Crimea, the rise of ISIS, and the Ferguson riots.
In 2017, you have Trump's inauguration, the Nintendo Switch come out, and Charlottesville.

So far, I'd say 2016 was the most pivotal year of the 2010's, especially with Trump being elected which shocked a lot of people.
2018 also seems pivotal so far with the March for our lives and the MeToo movement being popular.

I know, 2016 was definitely the most pivotal year of the 10s, no questioning that at all.

What I'm saying is that the years ending in 1, 4, and 7 have a long history of being very pivotal years in a certain decade, going all the way back to 1910s.
They're not always the most pivotal, and sometimes they can be stagnant, but generally speaking, they have a long history of social, political, or technological breakthroughs or transitions.

I think it's definitely going to be as the year continues to roll out.

Mid Term Elections are especially going to be interesting this year.

For the 2000s it would be 2000, 2002 & 2005.

2001 and 2008 were easily the most pivotal.

I'm looking at them and I still fail to see what "shift" they're supposed to prove. I'm not sure how pictures of people are going to prove that there was a cultural shift.

100%

1998, Biggest shift year of the 90's  (bigger than 1991)
- Prelude early  1997

2008 biggest of the 2000s  (Bigger than 2001, 9/11 did change a lot tho)
-Prelude
- June 2007

I see you were under 11 years old when 2006 was around, if you were teen then you would know of the "shift"
that many people talk about due to the pictures

Pay more attention to what is in the pictures and what they symbolize , because you really have to look at them again

The only thing they symbolize is the ridiculous amount of decadeology threads that are on this forum.

Actually, I believe the big shifts occur every 4 years, when a president is inaugurated.

I agree about your 2001 points.

2005:
- PSP and Xbox 360 debut Stateside
- Shows like the Office, HIMYM, The Boondocks, American Dad premier, marking a decline in the reality TV craze
- Music starts to shift from glam rap to electropop

2009:
- Obama inaugurated
- Lady Gaga rises in stardom (even though her album released in 2008, 2009 was her big year)

You can say the same for 2013 and 2017 as well.

Those weren't the first electropop albums. Sure, they were the most popular at that time, but Missy Elliot's "Lose Control" song from the summer of 2005 had that sound. Actually, Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. album was electropop and it was released in late 2004.

The most changeful points/years of the 1990s would be 1991 followed by late 1996/1997ish, there were also some other change points such as 1994 and late 1998/Early 1999.

For the 2000s, it would be 2001 and late 2008/Early 2009, I thought the whole period from 2004 through 2006 was a transitional period from the Early 2000s to the Late 2000s.

1989 was when the change happened from the 80's culture to early 90's. Late 1991 had a bit of a change when Nirvana's Nevermind was released, marking the start of grunge, but thank subgenre had it's own era which lasted until about 1995/96. 1993 was the next big change, when Bill Clinton assumed office and alternative rock and gangsta rap became mainstream.
