Subject: Who else misses 2005?

Written By: doublejm1 on 06/05/18 at 2:19 pm

I know the year 2005 has a cult following among several posters on this board, including batfan2005 and myself. I imagine most of us in that group were college students/graduates in our 20s at the time.

I can't speak for the others, but 2005 was a special year for reasons both personal and pop culture-related:

- I connected with my now-wife on MySpace and we hooked up.
- The rise of social media, including the launch of YouTube
- Got my associate's and enrolled at a local university for my bachelor's
- Changed major
- First paid job
- Great year for music (Green Day, Mariah, Rihanna, T-Pain, Chris Brown, etc.)
- Good year for movies (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Batman Begins, etc.)

While 2006 and 2007 weren't that bad (I graduated in Dec 2007), 2005 seemed to have a lot going for it. Not all of it was good, I know (Hurricane Katrina, pope passing away), but looking back on it, the year seemed pretty amazing.

Do you agree?

I was 14-15 by then, old enough to understand enough of the culture. I do miss 05. I was young as f and was a victim of Hurricane Katrina which, evacuating was beneficial.

2005 was truly an adventurous year.

Where do you live now? And yeah, I bet it hasn't been the same.  That hurricane, unfortunately, destroyed everything it touched. It would have nice to go down there before that event happened.

The N.O used to be the sh!t. N.O then and the N.O now are completely paralleled. The focus is absent now due to way more immigration. I guess that "N.O charm" went with all the sh!t we lost. I will definitely say, I wish you got to visit right before Katrina hit. The N.O really peaked in 04. Haha It was just AA, Asians had the corner stores with the lit Chinese food and the white peeps, the three trio.

I considerably live in Houston Texas now.

Culturally that would be 2006 as the most lackluster/average year of the 2000's. Thankfully summer 2006 in my family made up for that. 2005 was awesome for a lot of pop culture especially if you were a prime kid in elementary school at the time. 2007 was great too, but I preferred 2005 only because I prefer the mid 00's over the late 00's, but 2007 was without a doubt the best year of the late 00's and I'd still take that year over 2006 culturally.

TV in 2005 >> TV in 2007

2007 Music >> 2005 Music

2007 Movies >> 2005 Movies

Economy in 2005 >> Economy in 2007

2007 in gaming >> 2005 in gaming (although if you preferred 6th gen over 7th gen no matter what you'd probably take 2005 regardless)

Well I think that's pretty subjective. I was in primary school back in 2005, but I didn't like a lot of the pop culture at the time (particularly the music).

2005 was far from the best year for music of the 00's, but I'd take that year over 2006 and 2008 for music that's for sure. 2006 was probably the worst year for music of the 00's and 2008 was a transitional year with so many growing pains. 2005 movies were still better than 2006 and TV in 2005 was probably the best part about that year IMO. 6th generation gaming still being popular in 2005 still made living room culture gaming very huge. 2005 was the last year before YouTube got popular in 2006 as well. So I'd say it was a pretty good balance, but like you said it's subjective and I understand the hate 2005 gets. 2005 and 2006 are like siblings. 2005 being the good sibling who's cooperative and 2006 being the bad sibling who's always misbehaving. Both are the most controversial years of the 2000's.

Unfortunately, I was only in preschool, and I wasn't in elementary school until 2007. Mario Kart DS, Chicken Little, Kingdom Heats 2, Xbox 360, and YouTube all came out this year, but 2005 still feels like it doesn't have as much of a feel as other 2000's years.

I personally think 2007 than 2005 in terms of gaming. Hell, I think the 7th generation was better than the 6th generation. Though the Xbox 360 went from game-centric to casual, the PS3 went from casual to game-centric, and lets be face it, the Gamecube was the last console when Nintendo tried to actually be on par with the competition. 2005 and 2006 were great years for the DS, but for the Gamecube, it was so-so.

That explains it. The Gamecube's prime when it came to releases was 2001-2004 without question. 2006 was about the DS while the Gamecube was already on decline since 2005, but you still could have experienced Gamecube games from the past those last 2 years even if the releases were weak throughout that time. 6th generation was definitely better than 7th generation. 7th generation was just exciting for the online gaming when was exciting but outside of that it was a pretty weak generation when it came to overall variety you used to get with the previous generations. 7th gen is always divided into 2 different eras. I liked the XBOX 360 I and Wii phase of the late 00's but the XBOX 360 II and PS3 of the early 10's was meh.

I don't even hate 2005. I just think it's an average/so-so 2000's year. It's not bad, but there's nothing to special about it, in my opinion anyways.

When it comes to personal nostalgia I definitely enjoyed 2005: since I got a chance to visit Kansas City at a national church convention, playing pokemon colosseum that summer, getting the DS that Christmas and the year when I began reading gaming magazines. Despite being only 9 at the time I was somewhat aware of some of the pop culture from that year.

Great songs came out that year including,
Speed of Sound from ColdPlay
Feel Good Inc, Dirty Harry, and DARE from Gorillaz
Diamonds from Sierra Leone and Golddigger from Kanye West
Toy Soilders from Eminem
2007 was better than 2005 in gaming though but overall i think 2005 is better Pop Culturally and better overall.

I don't really, even though I should since I was 19 then.  2005 had good music but for the most part it was a very unremarkable year in my personal life.  It wasn't awful but doesn't stand out as being a great year either.  2004 was better.  2008 and 2009 are the years I miss the most in the '00s.

2005 was better than 2007. It had less social media cancer, the economy didn't burst yet in 2005. Also, 2005 had Revenge of the Sith, Sprite Remix, The Game, Yu Yu Hakusho on Toonami, and this commercial, so it wins. 8)

I don't have any nostalgia for 2005 because that time still seems so recent, the quality of music started noticeably declining too, with the rise of trap, snap rap, reggaeton, ect. 8-P. Tired out post-grunge was still going strong as well along with '80s retro rock like the Killers, the Bravery, ect.

In 2005 I was 26 and happily single most of the year, until I met my now ex wife on MySpace. In the spring I went to Palm Springs, CA and remember listening to Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B CD. I went to Georgia in the summer and during that time I watched Batman Begins, and that summer I watched a lot of good movies. But the highlight of the year was the Euro Trip in November, and after that things started going downhill especially into 2006, which just didn't live up to 2005. I could write a book about 2005 but that's pretty much my summary.
