Subject: July 2009 - Atmosphere (photo album) + Special Edition

Written By: John Titor on 06/20/18 at 6:31 pm

I said I would never make this thread... However it has been almost 10 years since the final year of The 2000's was graced upon us.
I will go as in depth as I can in this thread to recreate what 2009 really felt like. Some of it may seem different than how you remember it.

Indeed, I still view 2009 as somewhat recent for some reason, 2009 as you can see from the pics were not as vibrant as the years before it
(it kind of had a waning feeling) while the exciting new culture of the 2010s was slowly sinking its teeth in

I am personally not a fan of this year at all, but I know some of you guys are

Yeah, 2009 feels like it was just yesterday. I like 2009 when I block all of the crappy pop culture from that year out of my mind. I wasn't a fan of electropop or the autotune rap era at all. There were still things I enjoyed from that year though. I liked that fashion was more relaxed and casual. I also liked how social media had less presence and the style of phones we got to choose from.

I think a lot of it stems from November 2008 + being the start of the 2010s culture slowly or aka The Obama era.
Justin Beiber comes to mind of crappy pop culture from that year that debuted. Mall culture at this point was slowing down rapidly.
(there were still Mall Rats just was not as apparent )

I hated the Autotune crap, everyone was copying it at the time, Pop Culture really took a damn nose dive in 2009 including tv shows.

I can't even comprehend the atmosphere of 2009 anymore. They feel like early 2010.

Most definitely, reality television at this point was becoming obnoxious and oversaturated. I also stopped listening to the radio in 2009. I had really never been so annoyed with most mainstream music than I was in 2009 and the early 2010s. But like I said, I block these memories from my mind when thinking about the late 2000s, early 2010s now lol.

It was a month before that Michael Jackson had passed away, he had said that in March Of 2009 that The "This Is It" tour would've been in July Of 2009, that month would've been his final sendoff tour.  :\'(

Nah it just felt  different from the rest of the decade like a painting that was sitting in a window and faded.

That's actually a great way to put it.  2009 was the year the '00s pretty much died (though their influence could be felt through about 2012).  '10s culture was beginning to emerge that year but was still in its infancy.  I typically think of 2009 as identifying more with the '10s as opposed to 2008 which has more of an '00s feel in my opinion.

2009 was the worst year of the recession and that impacted the zeitgeist quite significantly.  In my personal life it was both one of the best and worst years of my life.  I had the only boyfriends I have ever had that year.  In September 2009 I moved to North Carolina, found employment quite easily, and so began my glory days.

Maybe it's because I live in a small Southern town where being fashionable is almost unheard of so I'm not around the latest styles that much, but I don't think it looks that bad.  Definitely not as dated as say 2006 or 2007.  Fashion changed a lot during the final years of the '00s.

Really? I think they look exactly like 2006. It's about the same difference as 2018 and 2016 (no difference).

Yeah once again, when you live in a small town, fashion is something you are more out of touch with probably than anything else and a lot of that has to do with the fact a lot of the popular stores aren't here.  You have to drive 3 hours to Dallas to shop at something like American Apparel or Urban Outfitters.  The radio here is quite behind on hits but that isn't as big of an issue anymore with the Internet and Spotify.

I hate how guys stopped wearing their hair (and to a lesser extent the girls as well) since 2013 or so. I hate the hipster vibe of this decade - all I like from it is the minimalism and nothing else.

It's definitely extremely dated. Nobody at my high school dresses like the people in the photos.

it's not talked about that much on this board, and until this week this was the first time a photo album was made for it, pretty much felt like a BETA version of 2010
and a very washed out version of the 2000s stripped of everything.

It's not talked that much in that it is talked every single week on this board, most of the time to discuss if it belongs culturally to the 2000s or 2010s.
