Subject: The energy of November - December 2008 was so weird

Written By: John Titor on 08/05/18 at 1:02 am

Anyone else agree? it was like exciting and scary at the same time.
I would say Late 2001 and late 2008 have the same energy feeling vibe.

No way, for one in 2008 I don't remember any 9/11-like event.
Also, I remember both and they felt nothing alike.
I'm sorry, but I think this is a revisionist look at that time.
It was nothing like 2001 for me. It had an underground shift in pop culture, but we didn't know it until early 2009.

Nothing like the energy of September 2006 though.

I also think because it was the end of the 2000s and went out with a bang

I was laid off in November 2008.  That was a very scary time to be honest.  Nobody knew exactly how bad the economy was going to get.  There were a lot of apocalyptic predictions back then.  I would say the worst of it was September 2008-January 2009.  By the summer of 2009 things had stabilized and by the end of 2009, it looked as if things were turning a corner.

Your obsession with decadeology is so weird.

Your obsession with decadeology is so weird.

This describes pretty much the whole website though.

It's crazy how a website dedicated to the study of decades is so averse to decadeology.

I would say Summer 2009 was even worse, I saw more stores close during that time, I don't think we reached that stabilization place until  may 2010

Is it dedicated to the study of decades (which usually involves analyzing or comparing decades) or is it dedicated to the discussion of decades (pop culture, political events, fads, memories, etc)?

You can carry a discussion about a specific decade without comparing it to another. I don't see this thread as decadeolgy because it compares two years from the same decade btw. But really, how many times do people need to discuss whether or not the 90s was more like the 80s or the 2000s? It's literally the same discussion over and over again because these discussions almost never result in a change in perspective from the users who like to debate on this subject. I mean people can keep talking about it if they want, they're grown; but it's just a pointless debate.

I can see how people see them as pointless. I can even see how they can at times be pointless. But illuminating things can come out of the discussion. All of us here have lived through multiple decades. It's only natural we start comparing differences and similarities. Plus, people compare current events to past events all the time.

I'm not saying the board should allow decadeology to run amok. I'm just saying some people shouldn't lean on their heat button on this issue so hard.

Retail wise, yes, but in terms of risk of economic Armageddon, Q4 2008 and Q1 2009 was the worst of it.  By summer 2009, it was starting to look like things might eventually be okay, though it would take a long, long time to recover.

Remember the whole 12/21/12 panic that went on in 2008-2009?

There was even a movie called 2012 that came out in 2009.

It wasn't until about October, or November, that it sunk in, for me, that the economy was in big doo doo, at least in the short term.

Oh yeah, and Obama! Him.....  ;D  ;D  ;D

2008 is the year of the paradox - it was when the Recession started to take effect, causing everyone to feel gloomy, but it also had a lot of energy.

It was exciting but also frightening at the same time

I guess the word paradox is best to describe it, I remember I was dating
someone new at the time  (only lasted a month /They were a transplant)
but also a drug addict lol,  I remember going to KB toys and seeing the 80% off signs
and there were other stores such as GADZOOKS that were closing down, it was surreal.
Then you had Gagas The Fame that just came out full of hits it just felt futuristic and classic
at the same time.

It really did feel like an era was ending
