Subject: How did 2006 differ from 2005?

Written By: doublejm1 on 09/03/18 at 6:55 pm

In what ways did 2006 differ from 2005?

Here are a couple I can think of:

- Less Green Day, 50 Cent, Kelly Clarkson, and Mariah, but more Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, and Nelly Furtado

- Ringtone rap becomes huge

- More flip phones than in 2005

- DVD players supplanting VHS

- People ditching dial-up for Broadband/DSL in large numbers

- YouTube is no longer the internet's best-kept secret

- 2006 wasn't as good a year for music and movies as 2005

- MySpace continues its reign as the undisputed social media juggernaut

- 2006 was a relatively quiet year in terms of major news headlines. 2005, however, saw the pope's death, Michael Jackson trial, Hurricane Katrina, the London bombing, Terry Schiavo, and the Jose Canseco/steroids scandal in Major League Baseball.

- 2005 welcomed the X Box 360, and 2006 witnessed the launch of the Playstation 3

Were there any I missed that you'd add to the list? Do you disagree with any of my picks?

Was in highschool then, at the time ps3 hype was UNREAL, wii didn't have that much hype it really made the mood feel futuristic, Timbaland was dominating the airwaves and more artists were experimenting with urban pop type music. Lupe Fiasco became a cult hit and more back pack rappers were taking note. Sonic 2006 came out and almost killed the brand. The WB and UPN ended, That 70's show and Malcolm in the Middle ended.

In October of 2006 the Black Berry Pearl debuted, the first smart phone I had ever seen,  In Aug of that year Facebook debuted to the public without a school e-mail but was not a success yet.

VHS was already dead by  Fall 2002, no one was copping VHS tapes then, however people were recording onto VHS tapes from tv & using their already existing vhs tapes when they felt like it.

The overall vibe felt different around September 2006 aka the late shift , it was a weird vibe

There weren't really that many differences.

The only thing that I could really think of is that many shows such as Malcolm in the Middle, That 70's Show, Will and Grace, The West Wing, Charmed, Arrested Development, and Fear Factor were coming to an end in 2006.

2006 is sort of like 2018 in a way - in both years, many shows were coming to an end, but the shifts of both years are often exaggerated on here. Not to mention, both years fall under the same Chinese Zodiac animal sign (dog).

I think the later part of 2006 felt more different, we had little things like VISTA and Facebook debuting, but they were not really that much of a factor in late 2006.
The best way to describe 2006 is  First part 2006 1A  and  second part 2006 1B

I myself only watched Cartoon network, MTV, FX at that point, so the WB ending really didn't effect me, nor did I see anyone crying about it lol
That 70s show everyone checked out when Eric left, Malcolm in the middle was always in hiatus (it was my fav show in the early 2000s) but by 2006
its timeslot was being screwed with so many times many gave up before the finale.

Lupe Fiasco became a cult hit

I first heard Lupe in the Kanye track "Touch the Sky," and later in Lupe's 2007 hit "Superstar."

Honestly, I wasn't a big Lupe fan and didn't know much about him at the time.

It is soooo weird to see these years being reminisced about on a board that I joined during those years to reminisce about the 80's  ;D

2006 was the year of the big shift and the beginning of the future, while 2005 was the same as the 90's, lol.

Ok, all joking aside, they actually weren't that much different. Both had a lot of dance pop and ringtone rap, flip phones, similar style of movies, TV shows like The Office, and 7th generation consoles.

While 2006 had a few good flicks, I think 2005 was a better year overall for movies:

- Batman Begins
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith
- War of the Worlds
- The 40-Year Old Virgin
- Madagascar
- Memoirs of a Geisha
- Hitch
- Coach Carter
- A History of Violence
- Lord of War

2006 had a couple of good ones like The Departed, Night at the Museum, and Blood Diamond, but I believe 2005 edges it out in the movies department.

I'm pretty sure I stopped caring about movies after 2005 too. I haven't really been too interested in that many since.

The thing is, if you were alive in 05 you were also alive in 06.  Everybody was, there is no exception to this.  So, your views are skewed and there's no real discernible difference between one year to the next at any time in history.  It's not like, because the human-created calendar suddenly flips to January 1, things change in society.  I believe there was one real change.  Beehives got bigger.  Bees saw need for more honey, less time to produce, made bigger hives.  It's pretty easy to figure that one out.  Other that that, 2004 was no different than 2005.  And I was there for it, so I know best.  Also, give some merit to all the changes that occurred around that time in technology, such as podcasts, laser-rides to the moon, and Inception (the movie - duh).  It created a world for us in which we could no longer trust what we were seeing, we had to rely on the internet and smart phones to think, rationalize, and confirm for us.  Rather sad times in 2003 and 2004.

I’m afraid you may be misunderstanding me. I’m simply stating that there is no one who didn’t live through both years. It’s not possible.  You should re-examine this and get back to me with a more informed post.
