Subject: Was 2005 the last year to show remnants of the 1990s?

Written By: doublejm1 on 11/28/18 at 6:16 am

When I stop to think about it, it seems 2005 was the last year to have a tinge of the 1990s:

- I was still using dial-up (until mid-2006)
- I was still using a CD player (until acquiring an iPod in Dec. 2006)
- As far as music goes, a few big names from the 1990s had revived their careers around that time (Mariah Carey, Green Day, etc.)

At the same time, we can see 2005 as ushering in the future:
- Shows like The Office, How I Met Your Mother, Grey's Anatomy, and The Colbert Report premiered
- T-Pain, Rihanna, and Chris Brown released their first albums
- Ringtone rap became popular

What do you think? Would you say 2005 represented the bridge between the past (1990s) and the future (mid/late 2000s)?

You see, I recall reading old posts from 2006 way back in 2011 (the archives were the first thing I read here), and I recall that people were overestimating how many '90s holdovers were left then.

Hell no. None of what you mentioned had any relevance to "remnants of the 90's". Late 90's culture ended in 2001 (connected to the Y2K era) while the final year of any late 90's remnants was 2003. "I was still using" is not what the majority of people around the U.S. were still using. Broadband internet was the most commonly used in the majority of homes by 2004. CD's and CD players evolved throughout the 80's through 00's. It might depend on which kind of CD's you're talking about because there were many different versions. CD's in general aren't really a cultural 90's thing if you look at its entire history. There's some 90's artists who revived their careers around the late 00's or 2010's too but they were still past their prime years.

I would say 2006 was.  But only remnants.  The '90s feel was gone sometime around late 2001 but there were echoes that lasted until about 2006.

No, The whole vibe morphed into the early 2000s a week before 9/11 and by after 9/11 we were in a brand new world.
Myspace was a zeitgeist as well as EMO & pop punk in 2005. Yes Mariah was back as well as Green Day but thats about it really.
Oh and maybe a new single by Will Smith called switch.

There was a heavy influx of 80s nostalgia during this time due to VH1's I love the 80s series, and other media referencing the 80s culture.
I was already off Dial up by 2005, good majority of people were on High Speed DSL.

Here is another kicker,  despite Youtube being the place people think of when watching music videos,  Yahoo ! Music had an online portal
where you could watch music videos, it was VEVO before vevo was a thing.

Most of the new things that came out in 2005, PSP, Xbox 360, overshadowed anything that could be considered connected to the 90s.
Podcasts also took off in 2005, around the time of the PSP launch. Batman Begins starts nolans trilogy as well.

That's what I thought when I first read the title of this thread. I thought it seemed familiar.
