I remember this summer started off not too bad but then August happened  :-X

It was still poor compared to previous summers though, since my family usually travelled, but we didn't go anywhere that summer. We did go to London, UK in March though, so...

That summer I swam for several hours a day under the glisttening sun. Not just at water parks, but also at the beach for the first time. I was a pro swimmer by this point.  8)

I played tons of Runescape and caught up on all the latest music videos on Yahoo! Music. I also got an iPod this summer, woot!  8)

Those emos really dragged down the core 00s, like grunge did to the 90s

I feel like the popularity of emo is really overstated. It was one subculture of many back then, and far from the dominant one.

Preach it. I don't understand why people pretend that emos single handedly defined the mid 2000s. It's a gross overstatement. However, their style did influence similar subcultures (like punk rockers) but they weren't the dominant culture. Just really popular.

I would say emo sub culture took up about maybe 40% of the culture then

That's being generous. I would say 15-20%. Rap and RnB were way more popular than emo in 2005.

The fashion icons were Paris Hilton and David Beckham and (ugh) Eminem and John Cena etc. and a lot of other celebrities, not emos.

Yeah, I agree with Slowpoke and Millennium. It is mindboggling how most people forget that the mid-00s (and even the later portion) weren't all that Emo. I don't honestly remember seeing much of that style throughout that period whether it was fashion or music. I saw more Hip-hop, casual, sports, and preppy apparel and there were a variety of songs ranging from Ringtone Rap, Conscious Rap, Crunk/Southern Rap, R&B, Post-Grunge, Pop-Rock, Reggaeton etc. Besides, these were the two biggest songs in 2005.

Just look at the highest charting songs from the mid-2000s

2004

2005

2006
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Year-End_Hot_100_singles_of_2006

Although many different genres were popular (like the ones you state in your post), the mid-2000s were always extremely urban. Hip-hop/R&B were the biggest genres of that time and emo did not follow behind them. I was mentioning in John T's 2006 atmosphere thread, that even people like Brooke Hogan & Gwen Stefani tried the urban look.

The genres in popular probably go something like:

1. Hip-Hop/R&B
2.Alternative
3. Emo

and I would also say Emo became increasingly popular in 2006 and peaked in 2007.

I would say emo's and pop punks presence was more in commercials, and fonts and things, (on a global scale)  you had bands like blink 182 and Jimmy, sum 41 that had airplay, but the r&b out numbered pop punk in terms of saturated influence, hell even look at Fast Furious Tokyo Drift. The pop punk emo crowd did saturate the market  but it didn't dominate it that much but it was there, I would say about 70% of an effect of what Grunge had (to compare it)

So to break it down you are 100% correct  Hip Hop & R&b was the dominant genre for this era.
