Subject: Would many things from 90s nostalgia reappear in 00s nostalgia?

Written By: GuapitoChico on 04/10/19 at 3:32 am

Considering the fact that cartoons such as PPG, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab, Wild Thornberrys, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, etc. continued to make new episodes until around 2004/2005 and reran in the mid-late 00s, do you think they'll reappear in 00s nostalgia? I mean, their continuation in the 00s is pretty much the reason why people born in the mid/late 90s still fondly remember these things; although they missed out on the late 90s, they shared the early & mid 00s with early 90s babies, so I suppose when they make their own nostalgia packs, these shows will be among the top of their list.

I know 2000s nostalgia has been popping up, but I believe its heyday will be in the 2020s following the 20-year pattern. What do you think?

A lot of 90s childhood nostalgia includes various stuff that was absolutely still relevant in the early 2000s, so probably yes.

Early 90s babies were also still kids in the early 2000s, so I think they’ll relate to both pretty well.

From a childhood perspective I think the late 90s and early 00s can be considered one era. They were very similar. Especially 98-99.

Yeah, the first half of the 2000s is an era that both early 90s and late 90s babies shared. And we all have fond memories of it. I just can’t wait for the 2020s when 2000s nostalgia will peak. I hope by then that people will stop misappropriating 2000-2004 as 90s and start giving the 2000s the credit it deserves.

No, the '90s are nothing like the early 2000s... Early 2000s is its own seperate thing. The '90s have nothing to do with it. I get annoyed when people lump the '90s with it, when it clearly isn't. Those '90s kids born before 1990 even think so.

The 2000s will have its own nostalgia. The '90s had its time this decade. It's not as if 1990s nostalgia will end, but early 2000s nostalgia will be distinctly separate. 2000s kids should have a time to reminisce. The early 2000s completely make the identity of the 2000s. Mid and late 2000s pale in comparison, and will never be as nostalgic or definitive as the early 2000s, which is the quintessential part of the 2000s decade and the part that really matters for nostalgia.

I agree. They were distinct.

Do you think 1998 & 1999 are completely different to 2000 & 2001? Those are usually considered the Y2K years (before 9/11 anyway). From a kids perspective the cartoons were the same throughout those years.

Also, the mid 2000s were part of your childhood too. A big part of it at that. You’re saying that you’re never going to be nostalgic for anything after you were 8 years old?  That half of your childhood doesn’t matter? ???

I never said that the early 2000s is the same period as the late 90s; I only said that many things span both time periods. And tbh, I really HATE it when 2000-2004 get lumped in with the 90s, and in my experience, it's us 90s-borns who do that, and I suppose it is because many of us don't want to admit that they are also 00s kids/partly 00s as well. But what I mean by this post is that there are things from the late 90s that continued significantly (and sometimes even longer) in the 00s.

I don't think it does justice to the 2000s to just call stuff like Powerpuff Girls exclusively 90s. New episodes of such cartoons were being made until around 2004/2005 (which is HALF of the 2000s), so I really believe they should belong to both decades' nostalgia. It's the same cartoons, but new episodes made in a new distinct era.

I am so afraid that in 10-15 years, the new generation might lump 2010-2014 with the 00s. Can you imagine that?

I really hope not. Currently, I know a lot of 80s-borns who get pissed at 90s-borns for lumping in 2000-2004, thereby misrepresenting the 90s.

Likewise, no way in hell will I be cool with the 00s being misrepresented because of lumping the early 10s.
Just because a cultural reference started in the previous decade and ended in the early part of the next, doesn’t mean that those years belong to the previous decade. It just means that the cultural reference belongs to two decades.

Keep us '90 born out of it. Don't be mad because you were born in the middle of the decade. No one's saying the late 90s and early 00s are the same.

The Y2K era is part of 2000s culture, not '90s. Nope I didn't say I won't be nostalgic, but the early 2000s are where the identity of the 2000s shine the most. I won't be nostalgic for anything after 2005 honestly. Not in terms of pop culture. Personal life is different though, 2007 is my favourite 2000s year in that regard.

Nope, you will actually be surprised by how many people say stuff like "the 90s didn't end until, like 2004." The point is that the 2000s aren't getting enough credit because many of us born in the 90s are lumping many of its references in "90s nostalgia," presumably because they don't want to admit to being partial 2000s kids.

Since you were born in 1990, I suppose you've experienced the 90s long enough for you to be able to distinguish it from the early 2000s despite some overlapping cultural elements.

2001-2004 was beyond different from the 90s. 2000 was Bill Clintons last year in office and the explosion of reality tv like Survivor and Big Brother and in 2001 we got George W. Bush and 9/11. Britney Spears went from innocent in '00 to her being more grown up in '01. So early-late 2000 was similar to 1999 and by late 2000 things changed when Bush 43 was elected President. I can point out so many things in both years that made the early part of the decade different from the 90s. Big pink tinted glasses girls and women wore with diamonds that made a heartn 2001-2006. Linkin Park, Ashanti, Nelly Furtado, Samantha Mumba, Pink, Alicia Keyes, Nickleback started out in 2000-2001.

'99 and '00 were both futuristic looking years and by '01 we went urban and suburban.

I used to think 2000 as a predominately leftover 90s year like everyone these days on the internet seem to, but revisiting the media of back then I'm actually surprised how much fashion has evolved throughout that year and things like chunky highlights, lowrise jeans, chunky/stunted belts and hairswoops were already popular by the end of it. Meaning that 2000 fashion would have been still pretty fashionable coming into early 2007, which is definitely not applicable to 1990 fashions into 1997 in comparison.

Thank you! People underestimate how the 2000s 2000 was; yea sure it was pre-9/11 and Clinton was president most of the year but you definitely had 2000s culture forming that year with things like the movie Chicken Run, Ps2 launch,  The Bring it on movie series, Wwe Smackdown videogame series, Bratz dolls, Dora, Pokemon Gen 2. All of which came out in 2000 I'm and had an impact on the rest of the decade.

I don't understand why some people would lump 2000-03 with the 90s. Sure, there were some leftovers from the 90s, but that doesn't mean you can lump the early 00s with the 90s as if they were exactly the same. Things were beginning to feel 00s around late 2000/early 2001.

I’ve noticed that too. I think when you’re younger, you want to be grouped with people who are older. Conversely, late Boomers born in the 60s want to be seen as Gen X, because Boomers are seen as old.
