Subject: I don't understand why these are only considered 90s shows

Written By: shrinkingviolet on 09/15/19 at 6:59 am

I don't get why 90s nostalgists are so surprised that 2000s kids are nostalgic for the following shows:

Classic Spongebob: 1999-2004

Powerpuff Girls: 1998-2005

Wild Thornberrys: 1998-2004

Ed Edd n Eddy: 1999-2009

Catdog: 1998-2005

Johnny Bravo: 1997-2004

I was born in the mid 90s and it really gets on my nerves, how people my age can't claim these shows. Do 80s kids ever tell 90s kids that Full House, Family Matters, The Simpsons, and Saved by the Bell belong to them? I even have 90s kids telling me I can't claim shows and movies that came out in the early 2000s.  ???

They aren't just 90s shows. They are also shows of the 2000s. The vast majority 80s babies shouldn't even be claiming those shows (I have never seen one claim any of those btw) because they were barely kids in the late 90s.

Starting in September 1994 and finishes in May 2004, does "Friends" fall into this category?

I can see Friends being a 90s show, because it peaked in the 90s. The same with Rugrats and Hey Arnold, even though they ended in 2004.  However, most of the shows I listed were barely on in the 90s and had more impact in the 2000s.

I feel like friends was more of a sitcom in which gravitated to the likings of teens and young adults even some children. But all in all I feel like it’s mostly remembered as a 90’s show since it started in the heart of the 1990’s. I used to watch a lot of Buffy the Vampire slayer when I was little and that show came out the year I was born and ended when I was in 1st grade :(. But all in all I feel like Buffy is more of a y2k show or late 90’s show. It depends when the show peaked. All of those cartoons mostly peaked in the early 2000’s like 2000-2003ish.

So "Friends" s both, for it must have had it peak at a constant for the years it ran.

I think it's more the late 80s and early 90s babies who say these are 90s shows. Heck, some of them even tell me I was too young for shows that came out in the early 2000s. I was born in 1994 for crying out loud.

No ai think since the show peaked in the mid to late 90’s and started in the heart of the 90’s it would be more so remembered as a 90’s tv show.

I think there's still a huge stigma to liking anything coming from the 2000s, with political events and certain aspects of 2000s culture and technology still resembling that of the 2010s, e.g. iPhones and the internet.

I can see people disliking 2006-2009, but the 2010s have nothing in common with 2000-2005.

2005 was a transitional year, lots of stuff that was popular in the late 00s began in 05 like ipod nano, Ben 10, Xbox 360, Youtube, etc. It was also the year when myspace became mainstream.

YouTube didn’t become big overnight though.

Youtube didn't start becoming popular until the summer of 2006.

I didn't hear about most of that stuff until about 2006 or late 2005.

There are also many 2003-2006 babies who claim Minecraft as a thing that only "2000s kids" will remember, despite it being popular back in 2011-2015, and the fact that those born in 2003/4-2006 aren't 2000s kids, though even real 2000s kids (those born in 1993/4-2001/2) have done this.

But they all lasted longer in the 2000s. Those shows aired when 2000s kids were kids too.

Many 2000s kids watched those shows, they aired well into the early-mid 2000s. Spongebob is something that pretty much every 90s, 00s and 10s kid grew up on, plus it started in 1999. There is literally no way it's more of a 90s kid show than a 00s kid show.

LMFAO that means The Simpsons, Full House, Family Matters, and Seinfeld are only 80s shows because they came out in the 80s. Most of these shows peaked in the early 2000s. Real 90s kids would have outgrown these shows during their prime. In fact some of them laugh when people count these as 90s shows.

LMFAO Spongebob and Ed Edd and Eddy should never be considered 90s shows. The Powerpuff Girls barely count either. All three of these shows peaked in popularity during the early 2000s and mid 2000s. Like I said before, real 90s kids would have already outgrown these shows during their prime.

True but 2005 started a lot of late 00s trends.

Yep, and these same people want to also claim shows that came out in the late 80s and early 2000s. They're a bunch of hypocrites.
