Subject: How similar were the Late 2000s to the Early 2010s ?

Written By: CarCar on 03/24/20 at 11:34 pm

I know people on here like to mention how lots of trends changed entirely after 2009 and killed the 2000s there but, on the other hand what were some things that both eras had in common considering they’re right next to each other.

How many 2000s things were still around in the early 2010s that still hadn’t died out yet despite the new trends ? This can include Cars, Technology, Music/Movies, Art Style, Fashion and Vibe

7th generation of gaming continued. Although one key difference is the Wii died out and the PS3 started selling more.

The late 2000s and early 2010s are like night and day:

The Late 2000s

2008: Twilight, Facebook gaining popularity, and Katy Perry’s debut album with “I Kissed A Girl” on it

2009: Jersey Shore premieres, Tiger Woods is caught cheating on his wife with many mistresses, Miley Cyrus ditches her Hannah Montana alter ego and sings “Party In The USA”

2010: Silly bandz, Angry Birds, and The Walking Dead debuts

The Early 2010s

2011: Instagram blows up in popularity, The Royal Wedding, Game of Thrones

2012: Gangnam style, The Hunger Games, Minecraft

2013: Kimye, “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke and Pharrell, and Frozen

Electropop crossed over to the 2010s with the help of artists like Jay Sean, Lady Gaga, and Ke$ha, seventh generation gaming was still a thing, Facebook was the hottest website on the planet, electro-rap was the dominant rap genre, there was scene culture, and there were a variety of cell phones with different form factors to choose from.

Minecraft was popular in late 2009/early 2010. I remember playing it in high school (I graduated in 2010). The rest looks accurate, although I thought Party In The USA was a part of the Hannah Montana TV show.

I feel like Miley fully ditched it in 2013 with wrecking ball but that’s my opinion

Minecraft was everywhere in 2012.

They were pretty similar. I was in high school during this time. I graduated Junior high in 2010. The late 2000’s and early 10’s were like a huge transitional era in modern society. Introduction of iphones and androids as well as a transition from flip phones, slide phones and keyboard phones. This was also the beginning of streaming. For people who didn’t have smartphones in that time, we used ipod touches which operated the same way. I’d say it felt like the 2000’s or similar to the 2000’s up until 2013.

Party in the USA was played on Disney channel and was apart of Miley's disney bubble gum pop act. It was 2013 when she broke free of that image. The VMA’s of 2013 really sealed the deal.

I also don’t think Instagram exploded in popularity in 2011. I was in High school in 2011 and it was pretty unheard of. Instagram increased in popularity around mid to late 2012 or early 2013 after facebook bought the app. Facebook was the standard social media platform of 2010-2013.

There were some similarities, but the early 2010s felt a "refreshed", slicker version of the late 2000s and had their own identity. 2010 for instance was pretty different from 2007.

He probably put 2009 as miley breaking away from her Disney Channel image because people made a HUGE deal out of her choice of clothing in PITUSA video (shorts ::)). It was ridiculous but hilarious at the same time because those people must have really lose their sh*t when 2013 rolled in.

And I would say Instagram started to increase in popularity even earlier than that, like early 2012. I was in my second semester of college that earlier that year and that's when I remember it being the new "in" social media platform.

I agree with the second paragraph. I first heard of Instagram in March 2012 but didn't really get it until July 2013. It depends on what area you are in.

Great summary! It's almost like you were also in high school in the early 2010s ;D. While my personal life kind of sucked, the pop culture at the time was where it was at!

Instagram was originally a photo editing app and people used it for the filters. In 2011 instagram was pretty non existent and only compatible with apple products. It wasn’t till 2012 or 2013 when instagram was enabled by the play store. The growth of users we’re becoming more prominent but it wasn’t popular in 2011.

I guess it depends on region or whatnot, but I didn't first hear of 'Instagram' until Summer of 2012. I jumped onto it by Late 2012, but I felt like it was still this niche app to post pictures on at that point, not necessarily mainstream yet.

Really ? in early 2012 android users couldn’t even use instagram tho. It wasn’t compatible with Google playstore. I remember using the app in 2012 on my itouch but it wasn’t big. Facebook was bigger as people posted statuses, pictures, “LMS” posts, Rates, challenges like the cinnamon challenge, etc. Instagram was like a newborn in 2012.

This was my experience too. I just remember it was liked for at the time advanced filters. It wasn’t huge in 2012 at all where I’m from and I live in a metropolitan city (San Francisco) were a lot of social media tanks are located. I was a sophomore in HS in 2012

Yeah, I thought Instagram in 2012/2013 was just another photo-sharing app. The app evolved into something more than that after 2013.

2007 was both late and core 2000s at the same time, so it was pretty different from the early 2010s. 2008 is the quintessential late 2000s year since it was no longer the core 2000s but the early 2010s wasn't defined yet.

2007 was not late 2000s. You’re calling 2007, 2008, and 2009 “late 2000s years” because you believe every time period is a “decade”.

A lot of people at my school had it. I remember rushing to take pics so that I could post photos on there so I could be cool like everyone else  ;D. I still have my OG account and my first post was April 2012, but I also looked at a lot of other people's and theirs was May 2012 and after. By summer 2012 it was definitely being used by a lot of people where I'm from. A lot of the younger people I went to school with who hadn't started college yet posted their HS graduation photos as their first photos, so May & June 2012.

Yeah I have a photo from August 2012 on there too, but it was mainly to share photos and edit pictures. There were no agents advocating models, there was no such thing as being instagram famous. The app was dead and boring. It wasn’t much of a social media platform. When Facebook bought the app, fb incorporated more features on the app which made it more popular and allowed the playstore to have it because before instagram was limited to apple only. The app was not what it is today back in 2012. In 2012 fb had reached 2 billion users while instagram reached 50 million users which is a pretty low statistic here in the US alone considering our adolescent population. Also considering the fact that not many teens owned an iphone in 2012. I mean you were an adult so it’s understandable but for a 15-16 year old in 2012, most had feature phones during that time and maybe an ipod touch.

I think another similarity between the two time periods is the reliance of cable television. The early 2010s were most likely the last era for cable TV dominance before streaming platforms gained traction by the mid-2010s and eventually became the most popular form of TV.

Only things I could think of at the top of my head were MCU phase 1, second wave social media, iphones, HD TV, 7th gen gaming, DEXTER, Breaking Bad, 30 Rock, The Office, Mad Men, Phineas and Ferb, Star Wars Clone Wars, Naruto Bleach One Piece anime era, etc.
