Subject: The Hypersexualized 2000s (Photo Thread)

Written By: oldmusicfan on 03/26/20 at 11:52 pm

Did anyone else notice how the ‘sex sells’ angle to the media was taken up a notch in the 2000s? Post any show and movie from the 2000s that obviously had to do with sex (including forgotten stuff).

I don’t think the 2000s were any more sexualised than other times. These things tend to ebb and flow - a period of being strait laced and uptight followed by “letting it all hang out”. For example I read of a version of Oliver Twist from the twenties being published with the subtitle “he was insatiable - he wanted more” over a picture of a woman with a ripped blouse. Hardly what the story is about.

Did you see everything I have posted this far? Late 80s and 90s teen movies like Some Kind of Wonderful and Clueless did not have sex scenes in them. The late 80s into the 90s were all about practicing safe sex. Then, at the start of 90s, sex music started to sell again over love music. After that, everything was about sexuality. You must admit there were a lot of sex comedies in the 2000s. The one below is one of the greatest of the genre.

I didn't really know about this (then again I was only a kid in the 2000s so I probably shouldn't have been aware of it then if I was), but I think a part of why the 2000s became so hypersexualized was because the 80s and 90s seemed more conservative in comparison. At least the 80s, when everyone was trying to revive socially conservative values (if not that then I guess they may be using sex to sell as usual in the neoliberal decade); I'm not sure about the 90s, and the 2000s is distanced enough from the 80s in that it wants to do its own thing.

Good point, the 1980s were horribly conservative, especially with the rise of Thatcher and Reagan.

I wonder if you know anything about the 90s in this respect - was it more socially liberal or not? Would it have used sex to sell particularly like in this thread for the 2000s?

At least on TV, the hypersexualization is due to the difficult access to pornography back then. You basically needed a privileged high speed Internet to download content or having the guts to buy xxx stuff to some market. So traditional media used to put a lot of soft porn on their channels, including hypersexualized advertising, music videos, reality shows, etc.
