Subject: Music of 2005: Closer to 2002 or 2008?

Written By: Rainbowz on 04/09/20 at 10:17 pm

Do you think the music of 2005 was closer to 2008 or 2002?

I personally think it's just a little bit closer to 2002, but not by a lot.

2008.

Definately 2008. 2002 connection was mostly gone by mid 2004 at most very early 2005.

I agree. Especially late 2005 was pretty much the same as 2008.

I would say closer to 2008. Crunk was still huge, and snap rap was on the come-up in late 2005 and early 2006 with songs like "Laffy Taffy" ( 8-P). In 2008, "Low" by Flo Rida was a crunk dance song and a massive hit on the dancefloors and charts.

Totally more closer to 2002, I feel like 2008 was when we started to sound more like the early 2010s music wise.

Ringtone music was both huge in 2005 and 2008. Crunk still had its influences on 2008 music, while still a novelty in 2002. Rock was its emo period in both years. The Nu metal of 2002 was already dead by 2005. Internet-based indie rock was hitting its stride in both 2005 and 2008.

So yeah 2005 is closer to 2008.

There was still a gangsta ethos to hip hop in 2008 that wasn't prevalent anymore in 2008, by which point 50 Cent's Curtis album had killed gangsta rap. Also, while the crunk songs of 2005 are closer to 2008 (the twilight of the movement), most beats sounded like bulkier versions of the Neptunes-style productions from 2002, whereas 2008 hip hop was lighter and synthier.

Barely anything changed at all about rock between 2002 and 2008, with the exceptions of the short-lived indie rock craze of the mid-2000s and pop punk changing to emo-punk. However, 2005 was the crossroads for the two movements, so there's no real impact there.
