Subject: Which era does the 2006-2007 school year belong?

Written By: mc98 on 04/10/20 at 10:09 am

The 2006-2007 school year was a special time where both eras seem to co-exist at the same time. It’s not very mid or late 2000s, it seems to be a mixture of both.

Both but leaning to the mid 2000s

Yeah, looking back it was still part of the core 2000s.

Completely late 2000s. The previous school year (2005-06) was heading in that direction too. Although I know you consider 2009 and early 2010 to be late 2000s, so we have different definitions of what that means ;D

To me as soon as HDTVs, PS3, Wii came out, it was like we entered a new era.

Late 2009/early 2010 leaned more early 2010s but there were plenty of late 2000s leftovers. Even though new technology came out throughout 2006-2007, the music and fashion wasn’t all that different from the 04-05 and 05-06 school years.

2007-08 started to feel modern but it was still in the core 2000s territory but things began to change in 2008-2009 and was further established by the 2009-2010 season.

I don't think there is a huge difference between mid and late 2000s music. 2007 did have more synthpop. Rock made a gradual transition from pop punk to pop emo throughout 2002 to 2007 but by 2005/2006 you could say the the scales had tipped in favour of the latter especially with bands like Boys Like Girls and All-American Rejects. Ringtone (snap) rap also exploded 2005-06 school year with rappers like Lil Jon, Dem Franchize Boyz and a couple of others. I don't know much about rap so I'll let someone else speak on that.

Yeah, mid-late 2000s Music don’t feel very different. The 2000s in music were consistent in style, especially around 2001-2008 where pop punk, post grunge, party rap and pop-R&B was popular. The 2009-10 school year was when the 2000s were finished.

I always thought it was very much a mid-00s period despite some newer technologies coming out. The internet was still completely Blogosphere/MySpace-centric. Mainstream music was still dominated by bling rap, urban pop, r&b ballads and emo rock. The fashion had slightly changed from the rest of the mid-00s but not substantially yet. And obviously it predated the recession so the glamorous and exorbitant 00s life was still kicking.

Yeah, a lot of people like to point out that Sexyback by JT ushered us in a new era but that song is not that different from 2005 hits like My Humps. His early 2007 hit What Goes Around sounds super 2000s.

That feels like more of a transitional period, with the mid-00s not dying out per say but less in view and the late 00s starting to kick in.

This school year was the peak of MySpace. Plus, a lot of songs from this period sound very mid/core 2000s:

Irreplaceable - Beyonce
Beautiful Liar - Beyonce & Shakira
Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne
Money Maker - Ludacris and Pharrell
Runaway Love - Ludacris and Mary J Blige
Walk It Out - Unk
Don't Matter - Akon
Smack That - Akon and Eminem
I Wanna Love You - Akon
What Goes Around - Justin Timberlake
Fergalicious - Fergie
Glamorous - Fergie
Too Little Too Late - Jojo
Smile - Lily Allen
Grace Kelly - Mika
Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefani
Welcome To The Black Parade - MCR
This Ain't a Scene - Fall Out Boy
It's Not Over - Daughtry
Lips Of An Angel - Hinder
This Is Why I'm Hot - Mims

I voted late 2000's but I always thought of the 2000's to be divided into two halves rather than having an early, mid, and late era like the 2010's or 1990's. 2005-2008 was one distinct era with MySpace, emo rock, dance pop, autotune, and snap/ringtone rap.

Many commercials from this time still had this aesthetic to them. 2007-08 being the last school year with this look to them.

That's hard, I think 2006 as a whole belongs with the mid 2000s meanwhile, 2007 definitely belong to the late 2000s.

I don't if I could call the year mostly late 2000s because the period was a pre-recession time and there was still that glamorous and bling 00s lifestyle. Plus, pop punk and crunk were still big.

Your confusing core 00s with mid. It was still a core 00s school year, but it darn sure wasn't the mid 00s anymore...

I guess I could agree with that but it does feel more like 2004-05 school year than 2008-09 because electropop wasn’t dominating the charts yet, emo rock was at its peak, and Crunk was still very popular like Walk It Out, We Fly High, and Chain Hang Low.

The things that make 2006-07 more culturally late is the technology released in that period. Also, Hannah Montana and High School Musical were inescapable.

Just look at the difference of these two songs from the same artist  :o:

Honestly, the 2004-05 through 2007-08 school year could be considered the bling/emo era.

I think it's transitional from mid to late 2000s.  Crunk, snap, emo rock, pop punk, and contemporary/electro-R&B were the main popular genres, and Myspace was at its peak. Emo and scene fashion were popular trends.

But the seventh generation of video games was in full force by November of '06 with the PS3 and Wii. YouTube, by 2007, was starting to grow bigger as a platform and I associate it with the late 2000s more.

2004/2005 school year felt nothing like the 2006/2007 school year although I would agree that 2004-2008 was like a huge transitional time in pop culture, technology and society. For me 2004 still felt like the early 2000’s a bit or at least a transitional time to say the least. 2003/2004 felt like a transitional era, like the last of the analog and the very beginning of the digital era. In terms of pop culture 2003-2004 was the last of late 90’s remnants sticking around too. it still had tons of left over early 2000’s remnants, there was mid 2000’s culture creeping in as early as 2003 tho. 2005 was like the first year that felt “Modern” even compared to 2004. And by 2006 we were living entirely in the digital era.

2004-05 to me felt more mid 2000s. The Motorola Razr came out and MySpace started to blow up. I wouldn't really call Ciara's 2004 output "early 2000s". Would you agree that 2006-2007 school year had a mid 2000s vibe but not completely? I would say that 2006-07 was transitional for technology but the music and fashion wasn't too different from 2004-05 despite being a bit more electro.

Yeah but the motorolla razr wasnt released until late 2004 and gained more popular significance in early to mid 2005. Ciara’s first album sounds mid 2000’s for sure but it has touches of early 2000’s in it as well. Destinys Child’s fufilled album sounds more early 2000’s as does Usher’s Confessions album with the exception of Yeah 3x. Ciara had a lot of 80’s influences in that album and Missy Elliott collaborated with her on that album which gave it some early 2000’s flavor.  Electro sounding hip hop was a thing in the early 2000’s as well. Brandy’s 2002 “What about us”, No Doubt’s 2001 “Hey baby”and Missy’s 2002 hit “Work It” sounds very electronic based. But it’s not just about music and technology. The trends, fashion, movies, kids trends/culture, etc still had some early 2000’s remnants lingering on in 2004. Like I could never consider The Butterfly effect,  Bring it on again, The Notebook, Napoleon dynamite, or Shrek 2 a mid 2000’s movie.  Compare Bring it on again (2004) to Bring it on: All or Nothing (2006) and you will see a difference. I consider 2006-2007 school year transitional but leaning towards late 2000’s. I remember the ipod nano second generation really put the ipod on the map that year and the wii was released that year as well too. It was the beginning of a new and improved era in my opinion.

The Bring It On movie looks more early 2000s but we're talking about the 2004-05 school year(Late 2004-early 2005), the movie was released in Jan.2004 and was filmed in 2003. The Destiny's Child song Soldier sounds more mid 2000s to me. Maybe the 2006-2007 school year was not completely mid 2000s but it was part of the core 2000s. There was still crunk hits like Walk It Out, Pop Lock and Drop It, We Fly High, and Chain Hang Low. The MCR and FOB craze of the school year just screams 2000s. I also find the 2006 Fergie and Gwen Stefani songs very mid 2000s as well. The 2004-05 through the 2006-07 school years were peak 2000s. Soldier always sounded more early 2000’s to me with the nokia texting noises in the background and the 808 drums. Loose my breath also sounds more early 2000’s to me as well. Fergie’s 2006 album was definitely mid 2000’s. Gwen Stefani’s Love Angel Music Baby album is multicultural and shares songs with influences from different decades like “Luxurious” which pays homage to the 90’s chicano scene in Orange county. Her song “Cool” on that album sounds like it could have been released in 2003. To me late 2004-2005 still had a few early 2000’s remnants but it was the start of a new modern era in my opinion. To me that core 2000’s vibe started to fade around mid/late 2008.

Really ? Soldier always sounded like a typical early 2000’s urban southern song. Sounds more similar to Project Pat’s 2001 Chicken head rather than anything  lil Jon, Mike Jones, peety pablo, etc. released during the mid 2000’s imo. The nokia dial pad noises just give it more of an early 2000’s vibe as well.

I agree this was the central portion of the decade and when the decade had its own identity.
