Subject: How come people always refer to 2008 or 2009 as the separator between 00s/10s?

Written By: NightmareFarm on 04/23/21 at 3:09 pm

The smartphone came out in 2007 but it didn't become mainstream until 2010/2011. And that is one of the biggest, if not the biggest tech advancements this century going by how it revolutionised the world.

2009/2010 started the 2010s IMO. People who say it was 2008 are out of their minds, 2001-2008 is the Core 2000s IMO.

Even 2009 was in the middle. IMO, the CORE 2010s started in 2012 when smartphones became a household item everywhere.

08 and 09 are precursors to the early 10s. Almost early 10s but missing smartphones and some other things which became the norm in 2010/2011.

Because everything changed in 1008. Lady Gaga came on the scene, electropop started, Obama got elected, and many more things

Really? How old were you anyway? Anyone my age or older at least KNOWS 2008 was the start of the 2010s given the huge changes. 2008 was a massive change and a new president got elected.. You think a new president getting elected and a new singer who was unknown before appearing on the charts is a small thing?

The 2010s culturally started in Fall of 2008, period. This was almost unanimously agreed on by everyone on this forum until very young people who were still in diapers in the 2000s started showing up on here recently lol.

I'm guessing you are at least several years younger than me.

Cultural shifts don't happen overnight. I never once said that one day in the Fall of 2009 people just decided that they were in the Early 2010s now.

You're right about Fall 2008, I think it started the transition and it became more clear in Fall 2009. But since most of the transition happened in 2009, I just prefer to keep it clean and simple and call the Late 00s-Early 10s transition year "2009" because I find it messy when people do the "late XXXX - mid XXXX" thing.

Please take this stuff less personal, though. It's subjective and it's a waste of time when turned into an argument, like come on man.

Smartphones becoming mainstream are more impactful than all of those things combined. Electropop started but there were still plenty of other genres being played until 2010 when it completely dominated. Rock died off and EDM gained a lot of traction that year.

I have always referred 2008 or 2009 as the separator between 00s/10s, because my calendar told me so.

Culturally the 10s truly began in 2010. Although '08 and '09, and to some extent '07 are precursors to the 10s.
