Subject: The Late 00s are a lot more distant than most would believe

Written By: NightmareFarm on 06/25/21 at 1:26 pm

A lot of people say 2008 onwards feels like one never ending era and that things have stagnated since, which I don't understand. Maybe it's just my UK experience(most here are from the US I assume so it could just be UK lagging behind in trends and pop culture) but I don't feel the 10s really began until summer 2009(heck, even from summer 2009 until summer 2010 i'd still say it wasn't fully 10s yet since you still had plenty of holdovers like nelly furtado, timberlake, black eyed peas and other songs which have a strong core 00s or late 00s vibe like "Jai Ho", "Broken Strings" and "Halo"). 2008 started modern electropop but it wasn't the dominant style of music that year and the first wave electropop that released in that year and the first half of 2009 felt very much different from summer 2009 to 2013. And 2014 onwards also feels very distant from the electropop era.

As for everything else, late 00s feels like an entirely different world compared to 2013 onwards i'd say. In fact it's even a seperate era from the early 10s.

Technology? Windows XP was the standard at the time as vista was poorly regarded. In the early 10s 7 became the standard. Smartphones were unicorn rare in the late 00s, they became commonplace from 2011 onwards. TVs? Late 00s was still in a transitional phase between CRTs and LCDs although LCDs were a lot more popular at this point. CRTs were completely a thing of the past by the early 10s. HD also became the standard since 2010 or 2011 for music videos and a lot more youtube videos started supporting HD around the same time. In the late 00s virtually every music video looked cloudy, youtube hadn't supported HD yet and many videos were 144 to 240p. Gaming? Not much difference since late 00s and early 10s are both 7th gen dominated brown and gray realistic FPS era but in the early 10s people realised the Wii sucked and stopped playing it, the DSI also got big right around the turn of the decade from what I remember. Trends? Hipster hadn't got mainstream yet. "Swag" and "Yolo" wasn't a thing. "Pretty boy popstar" trend hadn't kicked off yet since JB got popular in fall 2009 and early 2010. You also still had Emos and MySpace as mid 00s holdovers in the late 00s.

I think 2009 started alot of early 2010s fashions.

I remember people dressed like this all the way up to like 2014 in my high school years.

I don't know much about fashion so I can't really speak on that. Wasn't 2009-2014 the era of skinny jeans?

Yes and I don’t know much about fashion either but people in my high school dressed like the people in this video. I went to a predominantly black high school, so those fashion trends were pretty prevalent amongst the students

It was when the “YOLO/SWAG” brand on clothes was popular. Diamond supply, snap backs, khakis and vans

I've always put the late and mid 2000s like this, distant enough to notice somewhat of a difference between daily life, but not enough that it feels like a whole different world.

Not really. Theres a huge difference between the start of something being sold and it actually becoming commonplace. Same goes with the Ipad. It was released in 2010 but didn't become commonplace until like 2013. Virtually no one had Iphones back in 2007.

That’s not what I meant, I meant 2007 was where it all technically began because that’s when the iPhone came out. Over the course of the years that followed by it became more popular till reaching every household by the early 2010s around 2012-ish.

Where what began? Smartphones?

Yes they started being sold but culturally the smartphone era began in 2011 since thats when they became mainstream.

Again you’re not understanding what I’m saying. I didn’t say the smartphone era began in 2007. What I meant is the 2007 laid the seeds to the foundation of what was to come in the early 2010s because of its release in 2007

Well yeah, I guess you could say it laid the seeds for the smartphone boom in the early 10s then.

That’s where the evolution began, 2007 was the turning point that lead to the early 2010s smartphone normalization. As the years followed it would become more and more common to see people with them.

Looking back, I don't mind 2007 that much! Perhaps I was in too bad of a place to appreciate it back then!

I also can't believe I'm saying this, but I prefer the shallow, dull, and sometimes dumbing, 00's rap music than the snobby, shrill, overbearing, hypocritical, and group thinking, Cancel Culture, of 2015 and after!  :D  :D  :D  :o  :o

Late 2010s and early 2020s has this pretentious vibe of I’m more deeper and more sophisticated in my music then you think I am and it makes for music that not everyone cane vibe to like 2000s and early 2010s music

I don't think I can name 5 songs from the late 10s that I genuinely enjoy. Music is awful nowadays. Music started getting worse in the late 00s but there were still plenty of good tracks back then.

Define awful. What makes music from previous decades better then current music.

I may be baised but I personally like late 2000s music more then anything from the 70s or 80s tbh.

Boring or an earsore to listen to.

Music in the 10s feels that way for various reasons.

I don't mind music this year! Lil Nas's new song, Industry Baby, is very catchy! Olivia Rodriguez's song Good For You reminds me of early 80's rock, and the song is catchy as hell! Ed Sheeran's new song Bad Habits is sexy and has a club feel to it, I love it!

I haven't liked a year in music since 2013! In short, I respectfully disagree with you! Perhaps a bit of depression from the pandemic is good for the music soul!  :D

As I respectfully disagree that 70s and 80s music isn’t all that but yes I like lil nas X a lot. Except I prefer “Montero” over industry baby tbh and “Good for You” was inspired by 2000s pop rock instrumentals which was inspired by 80s rock so I guess that’s where it’s coming from lol ?

Every time I think of 2007-2009, I think of my early childhood since I was 3-5 during those years. So from my perspective, it feels like a thousand years ago to me. Though from a wider perspective, it's recent compared to the '70s or '80s, it's starting to become outdated as the 2020s wear on. 2007-2009 will be 13-15 years ago in 4 months. The last of the 2000s babies will start to become teenagers in 4 months.

So it does make sense for it to feel distant. Technology didn't really change that much, but at the same time it's in much higher quality compared to back then. Even the iPhone wasn't really that popular in 2007. It only became popular when the early 2010s hit.

The iPhone only sold about 30m worldwide by the end of 2010. Far less than say blackberry.

Late 2000s trap rap is pretty good. Young Jeezy, TI, Gucci Mane and sometimes boosie are still in my rotation.

I’m not much of a trap music fan tbh, I only like some songs from here and there

But one thing that makes 2000s vs 2010s hip hop music was that 2010s hip hop artists play with gender expressions more then 2000s artists. During the Late 2010s artists like Young Thug became popular and sensations because they wore dress and did things that were otherwise seen as feminine like pairing your nails.

Yes, it's a sort of glam rap.
