Subject: The least transitional year of the 2000's

Written By: batfan2005 on 10/12/21 at 9:16 pm

Similar to the thread in the 2010's. This one was even tougher since every year was transitional in its own way, and the decade overall was much more transitional than the 2010's, especially in the later half. If I had to choose I'd say 2002. That year was mostly a continuation of the Post-9/11/01 aftermath, even though the second half started to feel like returning to normal somewhat.

I'd place my bet on 2002 or 2005. Probably 2005 since 2002 was just after 9/11 and i'd imagine people were still on edge and things were hectic. I can't say for sure since I only remember random snapshots before like 2005 and my memory of the rest of the 00s is blurry.

2004. 2002 is a close second.

I actually thought 2005 was one of the most transitional years of the 00's. The later part of the year felt nothing like the first half. You might have not heard JT's "Sexy Back" yet but you did first hear autotune with T-Pain and ringtone rap that became popular in the 2005-2009 period, also Chris Brown and Rihanna made their debuts. In TV you has a lot of new shows like The Office and HIMYM, and less reality shows.

2004 was less transitional even though it still was. Same with 2003. That part of the decade was well established.

Even though 2007 was part of the transitional mid-to-late 00's. It was probably the least transitional of that period even though the first iPhone was released. Overall it was a continuation of the infamous 2006 shift with even harder electro sounds like Timbaland's "The Way I Are". Also that year had a lot of autotune and ringtone rap.

You have a point. But still, 2000s in general is very transitional so it's hard to decide which one is the least.

2000 you had the election and the new feeling of being in not only a new decade but a new century and also a new millennium. You had the post Y2K hoax aftermath, sixth gen console releases and some other stuff.

2001 for obvious reasons

2002 being the year after 9/11 where the government was deciding what to do about it if they should go to war. Music changed from the teenybopper stuff in the Y2K era.

2003 is when the iraq war started

2004 is an election year and considered the transition from early 00s to mid 00s culture

2005 for the stuff you mentioned and Web 2.0 and

2006 for the stuff people have mentioned like more electro style music, seventh gen consoles bla bla bla

2007 was an extremely transitional year in gaming plus iphone launched

2008 for obvious reasons

2009 shifted from late 00s to early 10s culture was obamas first year, recession end, MJ death, etc

This is also why it's harder to see a distinct early, mid, and late period but rather two halves of the decade. The post-9/11 until 2004 was less transitional and more of an established period, and in many ways was the epitome of 2000's culture with GWB/War on Terror beginning/Iraq War, reality shows, early American Idol, The OC, McBling rap, pop punk, 6th gen gaming (PS2, XBox, Gamecube). The 2005-2008 was more of a transitional period between the McBling and the EDM eras, which started to have less hip-hop and more dance pop, sounding more electro each passing year. In addition there was more emo and ringtone rap, and the R&B/hip-hop fusion similar to new jack swing (Chris Brown, Omarion, Jay Sean, et. al.). It was a distinct period however with the musical styles as well as TV shows I mentioned, and comedy films such as 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, etc; and 7th gen gaming (XBox 360, PS3, Wii). I also remember this as the MySpace era.

2002??

2002 is the MOST transitional year of the 2000's. Do people think 9/11 changed things overnight?

Effects of 9/11 happened in 2002 both economically and pop culturally:

Recession that began in March 2002.
Teen pop/Boy Band era ending in April 2002 with Hiatus of NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears.
WWF's Attitude era ending in April 2002 then changing name from WWF to WWE in May, departures of Rock & Stone Cold.
Justin Timberlake going solo and Christina Aguilera going "Dirrty"
Transition of Pop & Numetal of 99-02 to R&B, Pink goes from R&B to Punk Rock, Avril Lavigne debut, American Idol debuts.
End of Poke-Mania, Pokemon effectively overtaken by Yu-Gi-Oh.

2002 was the biggest transitional year of the 2000's.

Least transitional was 2000, it was basically 1999 on steroids and extended into early 2001.

2000-Mid 2002 is apart of Y2K era which spans from Late 1998/early 1999 - April 2002.

Mid 2002- 2004 is it's own era.

2004-2005 is a transition.

2005-Mid 2008 is what I classify also as "Myspace era" where Rihanna, Chris Brown, Neyo, Beyonce and Justin Timberlake/Timberland dominated charts.

Late 2008 and on is it's own era that goes with 2010-2012.

In 2000 you had the election and post Y2K relief. That alone made it feel different from the year prior.

2004 without a doubt was the least transitional year of the decade.

The world wasn't as political post Cold War other than the Clinton affairs. 2001 started as a continuation of the Y2K era even with Bush as president, people didn't care about politics much until 9/11, then we entered a transition and felt the effects of that in March 2002.

After the Clinton Impeachment Clinton didn't get as much attention in the mainstream other than Lewinsky jokes.

2004 was the start of a transition too, that's when mid 2000's fashion & music that lasted until 2007/early 2008 started.

Then 2008 started the transition into late 2000's/early 2010's.

No the mid '00s ended transitioning by 2004. The transition happened in 2003 and even earlier. The late '00s ended in late 2008, they didn't begin then. The early 2010s began in late 2008. The late '00s started in 2006. After 2006 there wasn't a hint of mid '00s anymore.

No it isn't... Only the first half of 2008 is late '00s. 2006 IS NOT mid '00s. Everyone and their grandma knows about the 2006 shift as well as the 2008 shift that changed everything. 2003 was mainly mid '00s, in my opinion.

2008 and 2009 are the late 2000's... 2006 is mid 2000's.

Now you could say 2010-2011 are late 2000's culture, but 2008-2009 culture originates in 2000's decade.

2006 is mid 2000's.

Chris Brown continued his run of mid 2000's hits in 2006, Neyo got big, Justin Timberlake returns, Reggaeton gets big and Rihanna continued her initial pre-disturbia era, this is the same era where "1, 2 step" Whisper song & "Yeah!" came out in 2004.

Mid 2008 is where a new era starts, electropop, Lil Wayne, autotune, Katy Perry, Disturbia era Rihanna, Chris Brown post teen era, Lady gaga etc replace acts like Justin Timberlake, Neyo, Reggaeton gets phased out etc

No it isn't. You're so far off it's not even funny. There was a clear shift in 2006 which led into late '00s. And there was a clear shift in 2008 which led into the early '10s.

Totally off but I can't change your mind. I am curious though how old you are and if you actually have the same level of memories during those eras as me and people my age or older did.

As I've stated before the 2004/5 to 2008 period was the mid-to-late 2000's which was a singular but transitional period. The core 2000's is mainly the first half of the decade, which best represents the decade. 2008-2012 is what I consider early 2010's culturally.

People on here have always talked about the "2006 shift"... since 2006. I didn't see it then and I definitely don't see it looking back. Granted it was transitional but not something that happened overnight, and not just because "Sexyback" was released. Maybe I just don't like to give that year so much credit since it sucked so much.

Well what about all the big changes in TV, gaming, and tech as well in 2006? It's not just about the change in music.

TV I don't remember as much about in 2006 as 2005 was the bigger change in that with the premiers of The Office, HIMYM, Prison Break, Deal or No Deal, etc. 2006 did have the PS3 and Wii come out, and especially with the latter with the concept of motion controls. However the first console of that gen, Xbox 360 was released in 2005. 2006 did give us Blu-ray and the now defunct HD-DVD. The other thing I noticed in 2006 that changed was the fashion (including crocs).
