Subject: Was 2001 a lot like the '90s?

Written By: inconscious on 12/27/21 at 8:10 pm

If you think about it, in 2001 the 90s didn't end that long ago, so there were leftovers right?

I'm pretty sure, yeah.
That's what I've pieced together from this site's archived topics about the early 2000s.

Just like 2011 was just like the 2000s. And 2021 is at least like the late 2010s, save for COVID-19.

Only like 1999, and even then, like a toned-down version of it.

Yeah, prior to 9/11 there were still remnants of the Y2K era, which wasn't core 90's anymore but not yet core 2000's either.

No.

How come you say that? I mean, in 2001, the 1990s only ended like a year ago, so there had to be some culture from that time frame held over.

Specifically, I think the early 2000s were more akin to the late '90s rather than the early '90s.

For starters, the '90s ended cultirally in 1998.

From what I personally remember of the late '90s/early '00s, they were similar to one another only inasmuch as they were all a part of the "Y2K era." The 9/11 attacks killed the utopian, millenarian vibe of the early 2000s, but I'd say from 1998 or so until *maybe* 2003 or 2004 (even this is really stretching it), there was a certain aesthetic or mood that was common to much of popular culture.

Of course, there was also the fact that boy/girl bands like Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, *N'Sync, Christina Aguilera, and others were really at their height in this period of years, and Toonami and Nickelodeon equally dominated children's TV at this time, but that's neither here nor there. There are equal signs that the Y2K era suddenly died off after 9/11, such as the rise of gangsta rap with Outkast.

Are you sure about that? In the early 2000s, a lot people were still using Windows 95/98, dial-up (broadband was around, but there were still some areas that didn't have it yet), VCRs, CRT TVs, and PS1 & N64 games were still being made.

Yes I'm sure. In the early 2000s, DVD players overtook VHS players. Just because VHS was around doesn't mean the '90s as a whole were. That would be like saying we're still in the 2000s today just because there are people who still use DVDs and Blu-Ray opposed to streaming.

People weren't using Windows 95 anymore, and whilst you're right about Windows 98, you have to consider that Windows ME sucked ass and Windows 2000 wasn't meant for consumers. So an actually usable successor to Windows 98 wouldn't come until the release of Windows in late 2001, and once that happened, people were rapidly switching to XP.
You are also right about dial-up, but keep in mind that many households even in the late 90s didn't have the internet at all. For many of those households that had dial-up in the early 2000s, it was a new thing to them. The big shift was really less about dial-up to broadband (that wouldn't happen until the mid-2000s), but more the decline of the dot-com era and the rise of true web culture as we know it (think Homestar Runner, Happy Tree Friends, Newgrounds). VCRs might've still been used but they weren't new and modern like they were in the 90s, people were increasingly switching to DVRs and DVD recorders. PS1 and N64 did remain popular until 2001, but that's because the only 6th gen console on the market at the time was the Dreamcast, with the PS2 not taking off until 2001, as well as the GameCube and Xbox. And as for CRTs? Well, if that's your argument, you might as well say the entire 2000s was like the 90s because they were still largely a CRT-dominant decade until 2007.
You'll also find that people say the early 2000s culturally didn't really begin until 9/11, though you'll also find some who say it began earlier in 2001. Regardless, 2000 and portions of 2001 are part of the Y2K era, meaning some resemblance to the late 90s is to be expected. By the time the real early 2000s began in late 2001, 6th gen gaming, DVDs, and Windows XP really took off.
