Subject: 90s nostalgia started in the Mid 2000s

Around Summer 2004 I noticed the 90s starting to be nostalgic

Sega mini systems were all over Toys R us

Can confirm yes as far back as 2005 Gen Xers and  millennials born in the 80s were already getting nostalgic for the 90s you would even see 90s nostalgia post on forums at the time.

However the 2000s decade was mainly focused on 70s and 80s nostalgia and even though 90s nostalgia may have started in the mid 2000s it didn't really take off until the early 2010s around 2011/2012 when  younger millennials born in the early 90s started becoming nostalgic for the mid/late 90s and early 2000s.

I do remember in the 2005 film "Just Friends" there was 90's nostalgia in the opening scenes.

Do you think the nostalgia "span" is getting shorter and shorter? There are people on this board who have expressed "nostalgia" for times immediately pre-pandemic. And some have even expressed "nostalgia' for the early days if the pandemic. It really seems inevitable that the logical course will ultimately be "nostalgia" for that which has not yet happened. Eventually this concept will be embraced. We already see the first traces of it here with people semi-frequently posting speculations if there will be certain nostalgias for certain previous years in future years that have not yet arrived.

It seems that way. When my friends and I were young (younger) I do not recall any of us having nostalgia for any era until we hit about 30 years old, then we started to look back on our youth, the music, the TV shows.
Would social media and the internet (looking things up from a past era or year is easy, not something our generation had until I was about 40) be contributing factors in the nostalgia span getting shorter?

I think people are already nostalgic for the 2010's because... well look how things have gone this decade so far

There was enormous backlash against the '90s in the 2000s.
