Subject: September 12, 2001-March 2002 Hold period / March 2002 was end of Y2K era

Written By: RLStern on 06/20/22 at 12:35 pm

From September 2001 after 9/11 to the stock market crash of 2002, there was a hold period culturally. 9/11 was beginning to sink in and by the recession of March of 2002 it hit culturally.

Things typically stayed the same.

Last stretch of Numetal

Last stretch of the teen pop era(NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Britney still dominating pop charts)

Last stretch of the WWF's Attitude era.

March 2002 hits and the last remnants of the Y2K era are gone and we are in the core Early 2000's.

-Carson Daly slowly starts withdraw from TRL and Hip-Hop becomes #1 music genre, when only 2 years prior it was behind bubblegum pop and numetal.

-Bubblegum pop is done, marked by Backstreet boys, NSYNC, and Britney spears going on hiatus while Justin Timberlake goes solo as is numetal

- WWF Attitude era ends with brand split, Rock and Austin leave, and they change name to WWE, effects of Wrestling World sans WCW takes effect a year after WCW is sold.

-DVD's starting to become household standards, as opposed to the new unproven tech it was from 97-01.

I strictly go by September 11 2001 as the cutoff date. The terrorist attacks take priority over pop culture changes imo.

And around this time, the world still had flip phones.

Most people put The Millennial era or Y2K era as 1997 to 2001. Millennium and Y2K may be different things to different people though.

For me whatever you call an era. 1997 to 2002 was one era.

Avril Lavigne truly was revolutionary. Her faux rebellion and edgy fashion.  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D
I kid, I kid, Avril. I liked her first album. Sk8er boi satisfied both the Avril crowd and the pop crowd.  :(  :(  :(  :(
It was a better rebellion than Willa Ford's I Wanna Be Bad. She was supposed to be the Anti-Christina and Anti-good-girl-pop.

I think 9/11 completely ended one era (Y2K) and began the next (true early 00's). Rarely does a single event change an era in just one day. Normally it's more of a longer transition when it's not as clear when one era ends and the next one begins.

Britney Spears released her Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) video in March of 2002.  ;D

I guess because media (Albums/Movies/TV/Games) that was still in production or things just completed right before 9/11 but was released after the attacks had to make their run during that time period first.

Everyday life and live shows were the same too though such as the Attitude era still going until the brand split or TRL still featuring the same artists at top of chart.

The real change was the Spring and Summer as detailed in the OP.

By the fall of 2002 everything changed, here's some notable physical/aesthetic examples:

But yeah movies take a while for release, a movie like Spider-Man(2002) is a pure Y2K movie, released at the tail end of the era/transition.
