Subject: What is the worst/stupidest/funniest thing to have happened in political history

Written By: GWBush2004 on 07/19/04 at 7:40 am

The worst would be:

1. JFK getting shot.
2. Lincoln getting shot.
3. Nixon resigning.
4. Clinton winning the 1992 election.

The stupidest/funniest would be:

1. Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis climbing into the tank (by far the worst, what an as*.)
2. George Bush Sr. throwing up on the japanese prime minister on national television.
3. Bob Dole tripping and falling off a stage in California while campaigning for president.

There is a movie called "A Man with a Plan" starring an old farmer named Fred Tuttle. The plot of the movie is that Fred decides to run for Congress on the "regession" ticket for the money. Funny movie I do recommend seeing it. But, that is not the end of the story.

"Man with a Plan-Part 2"- 6 years ago, there was this flatlander/carpetbagger millionaire who moved here from Mass just to run against Pat Leahy. Since there were no others in the GOP running against him in the primary, Fred decided to throw his hat into the ring. The debates were so funny. Fred asked questions like "How many teats does a cow have?" The guy answered 6.

We have open primaries meaning that ANYONE can vote in them. So, Fred won the primary by a LANDSLIDE!!  Then he endored Pat. Their debates were just as funny. Pat would answer a question and when they turned to Fred, he would say, "Pat answered that so well. I can't do any better than he did." This was at the same time when NY had that nasty election with Demato and Schumer with major mudslinging and Pat and Fred were so friendly to each other. It was not surprising who won that election. (Life imitaing art?) Fred spent a total of about $200 on his campaign. Yes, that is only two hundred dollars. And that was more than he wanted to spend. We just spent the entire campaign season laughing our heads off.

Well, the guy who lost to Fred kept complaining about our open primaries. His complaints didn't go very far. He is trying to run again this year against Pat but, alas, we don't have Fred anymore. He passed away last year.  :\'( But, there is another guy who is trying to fill Fred shoes. Maybe this guy will get the hint that this state does not want him.

I can tell you all one of the stupidest and funniest things that ever happened in Nebraska political history:

Back in (I believe) 1986, Nebraska Sen. Ed Zorinsky (a Democrat) died while in office. Then Gov. Kay Orr appointed David Karnes, a Republican (and a lawyer from Omaha with no prior political experience), to fill his vacancy and complete his term. In 1988, former governor Bob Kerrey, a Democrat, ran against Karnes. About 2 or 3 months before the election, Kerrey and Karnes were debating at the Nebraska State Fair, when Karnes at one point said, "We need fewer farmers." Not the smartest thing to say in a predominantly agricultural state. Especially not at an open-air pavillion at the state fair, standing right there in front of bleachers packed full of hundreds of farmers and ranchers from all over the state. Not surprisingly, the crowd started shouting and yelling and booing. For the remainder of the campaign Karnes was trying to backpedal and say he didn't mean what he said, but the damage was done, and Kerrey won in a landslide. What a butthead.

I remember seeing the movie "A Man with A Plan," starring Fred Tuttle (RIP) at a local indie theater.
:)

I'm still working on the best, the worst, I'd say:

1. Athens losing to Sparta in the Peloponnesian war.
2. The undermining of the advanced Muslim civilization by Genghis Khan and subsequent Mongols.
3. European Colonialism
4. Nazi Germany
5. The Assassination of JFK
6. The election of Ronald Reagan in 1980.

There once was this crazy man from Texas who tried to run for president.  And as his running mate he picked an old, retired admiral.  And during a vice-presidential debate, the man actually fell asleep during questioning.  Also, he had to keep adjusting his hearing aid.  Also, because he was so unprepared and given so little notice about his participation in the debate, that he never got a chance to answer his own opening question: "Who am I?  Why am I here?"

Yes, I remember the VP debate with Admiral Stockdale very well. But among Stockdale, Quayle, and Gore, old Jim was the only one we could stand!

I am going to take this to another angle.

While many love or hate President Reagan, none can deny that he was one of the funniest and most well-spoken Presidents in history.  His wit and soft spoken manner was always entertaining.

During the 1988 Presidential campaign, Lloyd Bentsen made a poke at George Bush, saying "I remember John Kennedy and believe me, John Kennedy was no John Kennedy."  This was remembered for years afterwards.

Fast-forward to the 1992 Republican Convention.  Ronald Reagan was one of the main speakers, and I was lucky enough to be watching it (on TV) when he uttered the following line "Talking about Bill Jefferson Clinton:

"This fellow they've nominated claims he's the new Thomas Jefferson. Well, let me tell you something. I knew Thomas Jefferson. He was a friend of mine. And governor, you're no Thomas Jefferson."

After all of the comments about his age over the years, this was very humerous, and really struck a cord with a lot of people.

Another funny event would have to be the failure of Wilber Mills to run for re-election, when it became public that he had cavorted nude in the Lincoln Memorial - Washinton Monument Reflection Pool with Fanny Fox, a stripper.

The biggest tragedy would have to be the election of 1876.  The compromise removed Federal Troops from the south, ended Reconstruction, and enabled the start of the "Jim Crowe" laws, which were not resolved for almost 100 years.  We are still feeling the effects of that election to this day.

Several years ago for the Congress race, our local PBS station had a debate with ALL the candidates-some from parties I have never heard of. One guy from the "Grass Roots" party (a party that advactes the legalization of marijuana) was stoned out of his mind. It was VERY obvious. At one point he said, "Oh wow. I forgot my train of thought". It was very funny but didn't help the party-or the cause very much.

Sorry man, but you've got it all wrong. The quote came from one of the '88 VP debates. Bentsen said to (then) Senator Dan Quayle "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."

I've been trying to find the reference to this on the Snopes page but it looks like they've updated the pages and removed it.  I can't recall the exact explanation of why it is wrong but JFK was saying I am a Berliner.  It's like someone coming to America and saying "I am a New Yorker", nobody really believes they are calling themselves a magazine.

Mostly, it was a linguistic/translation error.  Much like when George Bush Sr. Was told by the Japanese Prime Minister he would "Think about" reduceing trade terrifs.  In the US, that phrase tends to mean a neutral view, while in Japan it actually is a polite way of saying no.

I found this explanation on the quote:

I have heard and read from several different sources the story that John F. Kennedy made a major German language blunder in his famous "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in Berlin, Germany.  The story goes that he should have said "Ich bin Berliner" ("I am a citizen of Berlin"), and that "Ich bin ein Berliner" really means "I am a jelly doughnut."  (A "Berliner" is in fact a type of jelly doughnut made in Berlin.)

Add to that his heavy accent (He was famous for saying "Cuber" for "Cuba") and it is no wonder that this is still remembered over 40 years after his death.  I myself grew up listening to the Vaughn Meader records..  which loved to poke fun at his accent.

Atlantic City's housing projects need to be cleaned up...or demolished. One of the projects, Stanley Holmes Village,is a favorite place for drug deals....and Atlantic City's Inlet area is notorious for drug sales,gangs,gun-play and even MURDERS..but there is some progress with getting criminals off the streets in AC..

While some of these posting are funny etc they all seem to be US based.
In the Great White North we've had our Prime Ministers do the following

Call someone a F#%ing Dummy in the House of Commons and claim he said Fuddle Duddle
The same PM gave the 'Salmon Arm Salute' (the finger) to some protesters at a campaign stop
and the best was one PM who grabbed a protester by the throat and throw him to the ground thereby gaining the nickname 'the Shawinigan Strangler' and making us wonder if he really needed body grauds.

Cute.  Still not as entertaining as the brawls that break out in the Taiwanese and Thai parliaments, or the riotous tiffs of the Israeli Knesset!

That reminds me of an anectdote about illustrious Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley.  Daley cracked down brutally on protesters at the 1968 Democratic Convention.  When Sen. Abraham Ribicoff (D-MA) was endorsing George McGovern for President, he said, "with McGovern as President you wouldn't see Gestapo tactics on the streets of Chicago!"  The crowd roared, Daley exploded, shouting, "F**k you!, f**k you!"  No one could hear him, but the cameras caught his mouth moving.  He insisted he was saying something else.  To this day, Daley apologists will say, "Mayor Daley had a word for people he didn't like, "faker."  He was saying "faker."  Sure!

John Prescott is a Labour politician (Left Wing).  He is the Deputy Prime Minister and was (is?) Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions.

He's made a name for himself by being quite outspoken but using not-quite-English to do so.  Also, at a Labour Party conference he drove about 200 yards from his hotel to the conference centre.  Later he claimed it was because his wife didn't want her hairstyle messed up in the wind.

As Bobby says he once threw a punch at someone who threw and egg at him. And here's a photo
