LaPierre: Kerryite Soros Pushing Global Gun Ban

Billionaire John Kerry supporter George Soros is working through the U.N. to negotiate a treaty that will ban private ownership of firearms on a worldwide basis, says National Rifle Association spokesman Wayne LaPierre.

Addressing the annual SAFE: Right to Carry Conference last Sunday on New York, LaPierre warned, "The U.N. is, I believe, the major threat that we're going to be dealing with."

"Under the umbrella of the United Nations, there are now more than 500 of these organizations working day and night trying to ban civilian ownership or firearms," he explained.
Under the banner of IANSA - the International Action Network on Small Arms - Soros operative Rebecca Peters is working to capitalize on the success of her gun ban campaign in Australia, where firearms possession is now illegal and crime is going through the roof.

On Tuesday LaPierre is set to debate Peters on InDemand pay-per-view TV, where the two will lock horns over the upcoming U.N. global gun ban conference in the summer of 2006.

Peters is such an anti-gun zealot that she even argues that police should be disarmed. "When police begin to carry guns, that motivates criminals to carry guns," she complained recently, according to LaPierre.

In America, however, Peters' efforts have been frustrated so far thanks in part to President Bush's U.N. appointees, Under Secretary of State John Bolton, former Congressman Bob Barr and former U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland Faith Whittlesey.

According to the NRA chief, last year the conservative trio "went to the U.N., looked them right in the eye and said, 'We will not sign off on any international treaties that touch the Second Amendment in the United States.'"

Rep. Barr, who was also on hand at the SAFE conference, recalled Under Secretary Bolton's address to the U.N.

"He gave a very straightforward and very impassioned lesson to those U.N. bureaucrats who were there," said Barr. "And he basically told them our Second Amendment is not for sale to the United Nations."

"They were shocked to hear that," Barr added.

Things will be different if Bush loses in November, warned LaPierre, especially given John Kerry's long record of opposition to Second Amendment rights.

"Can you imagine, if President Kerry appoints the U.S. delegation to that conference, what we're going to end up with?" he said.

--So now the liberals who know they can't win a fair fight are trying to ban guns through the United Nations (UN)?  Well first off America wouldn't have to obey the order, since the UN would have no real power over it even if it did pass, also we know how well the UN enforces what they pass/say *coughIraqcough*.  This is an outrage that this is even up for debate, this is not a global issue!

US out of UN!

Fat chance.  The United Nations cannot mandate sovereign nations to ban citizen ownership of firearms.  Rebecca Peters does not work directly for Soros.  She works for IANSA (International Action Network on Small Arms).  Here is a link to their program from their site:

http://www.iansa.org/un/index.htm

As you can see, their goals focus on the stop of illicit gun trade and manufacture, better small arms identification methods, disarming ex-guerilla forces, and so forth.  Some of their goals would not apply to the U.S., but to nations recovering from coup and anarchy.  Now, your NRA buds don't want gun control anytime anywhere, but they are in the minority among the world and U.S. populations.  Heck, they're even in the minority among card-carrying NRA members!

Peters was a Soros Senior Justice fellow working with the Inernational Alliance for Women.  Here is a statement she made in Vienna back in 1998.

http://www.tf.org/tf/violence/firearms/Intl/women5wp2.shtml

She's obviously a lady who hates guns, and would like to see as few of them as possible out there.  However, a person in her position only has power unless a sovereign nation chooses to court her counsel, as Australia certainly did.

The U.S. has nothing to fear from her.
Peters is only one of dozens of Soros Senior Justice Fellows, which have included all kinds of scientists, journalists, and scholars.
The Fellowships fall under the rubric of the Soros philanthropic foundations, including the Open Society Network.

http://www.soros.org/

Can we really make the leap to say that Soros is personally working with Peters in cahoots with the U.N. General Assembly to prohibit gun ownership worldwide?  Of course not!
Even the subsequent paragraphs in the half-@ssed Newsmax story make that clear.  Yet,  the Newsmax HEADLINE leaps even farther:

LaPierre: Kerryite Soros Pushing Global Gun Ban

Any editor knows you design your headline to give the general impression you want people to get if they get nothing else.
So we've gone FROM one woman's effort working for one NGO, who is partially funded by one fellowship from one philanthropic organization funded by Soros's general umbrella philanthropic foundation TO "Soros Pushing Global Gun Ban."  And THEN they append "Kerryite" because Kerry gets some contributions from Soros, thus implying;
"KERRY WANTS TO TAKE YOUR GUN AWAY!"  Yeah, Kerry, who is fond of deer hunting himself.

OH COME ON!

No wonder it's only NRA and right-wing fear-mongering sites pushing this "story."

Now, just for hypothetical, what if the U.N. ruled no U.N. country could allow its citizens to own firearms.  What would we do about that decision?  We'd ignore it, of course, just like all the other U.N. decisons we don't like!  We'd say, "Yeah, what are you gonna do it about it, Kofi?"  And that would be the end of it.  So what are you gripin' about?

And why do YOU trust a guy named "La Pierre," sounds kinda French, now don't it!

Back to the old drawing board in the John Birch Society Clubhouse!

Please, PLEASE tell me that you aren't so stupid as to believe that the UN really is trying to ban private gun ownership - FFS, it's obvious that they've got no power over nation states to do any more than say "er... excuse me but we think this may be a good idea"

But if you're so credulous as to swallow that hokum, I might just as well bow out of this thread now

US out of UN!

I mention the JBS because that's one of their long-running slogans.  The local Bircher nutjob in my hometown had a "U.S. out of U.N." bumper sticker.

Don't you mean BJS, Birch John Society for the preservation of wooden toilet seats?  ;)
