>Andy Rooney said on "60 Minutes" a few weeks back:
>I don't think being a minority makes you a victim of anything except

Dare I say it. I agree with some of that.
However, as much as we have a right not to be tolerant, we also have a right to learn from other people's experiences.

I agree with a lot of this, but I have also thought for a long time that Andy Rooney has a giant bug up his a**.

I often if Andy Rooney's head will explode just like in Scanners!!! ;D
I'd like to see a couple of men in white suits go barging into the studio, tackle Andy Rooney, pin him down, bend him over and pull his pants down. Then one of the men would pull a set of Vise-Grips out of his pocket, reach down, and yank that huge bug out of Rooney's a**. Rooney would then stand up (suddenly looking 20 years younger) and turn to the men in white suits and say, "Thanks, fellas! I haven't felt this good in years!!!"
;D ;D ;D

Andy Rooney never said any of this. Snopes debunked this ages ago.

Phew! Thanks for breaking the news, Chucky, I thought I was going to have to do it! The mock-editorial wasn't even a good hoax. The phraseology doesn't even match Rooney's, let alone the manner of subject!

Before even reading ChuckyG and Maxwell's post I knew this was not Andy Rooney. To much common sense.

Can't fault the arithmetic there... but in the same vein, when 90% of those arrested are black, or only 10% of the population are black, then you'd have to admit that it is
...also when 90% of black defendents are convicted, but only 40% of white defendents, that's... Florida?
btw, who is Andy Rooney?

Rooney is a very old journalist with eyebrows that could conceal a school of whales. He has a segment on a popular CBS news programme called "60 Minutes" where he lays out rules that he thinks should be in place and in doing so, attempts to set the record straight. A grumbly old fart, sure, but he's entertaining.

"Democrats (I think to myself) are liberals who believe the people are basically good, but that they need government help to organize their lives. They believe in freedom so fervently that they think it should be compulsory. They believe that the poor and ignorant are victims of an unfair system and that their circumstances can be improved if we give them help. Republicans (I think to myself) are conservatives who think it would be best if we faced the fact that people are no damned good. They think that if we admit that we have selfish, acquisitive natures and then set out to get all we can for ourselves by working hard for it, that things will be better for everyone. They are not insensitive to the poor, but tend to think the poor are impoverished because they won't work. They think there would be fewer of them to feel sorry for if the government did not encourage the proliferation of the least fit among us with welfare programs.

This political division between left and right is described in exactly this way in the earlier chapters of Anthony Burgess's novel "The Wanting Seed." A teacher is explaining to his class the way in which the pendulum swings in Western society between the Pelagian (liberal) phase, and the Augustinian (conservative) phase. How it's a sort of viscious cycle where one phase's shortcomings will always lead to the growth and eventual re-establishment of the other phase, over and over again. The teacher explained each side exactly how Rooney does in this quote.
Has anyone else read this book? I have only gone through the first ten chapters, but I've put it off for a while, mainly because I am tired of constantly having to bust out the dictionary. Burgess's vocabulary was incredible. Many of the words he uses don't even appear in most desk dictionaries.

Like so many people, the only Burgess I've read is "A Clockwork Orange," but I've heard wonderful things about the rest of his canon.
