If you believe in evolution, the egg.
If you believe in creation, the chicken.

so was the chicken egg a mutated form of the egg of a more primitive bird? There'ss no way chickens predated eggs unless you don't believe in dinosaurs or other egg-laying creatures that existed before the chicken. There's a little more doubt in my mind about whether chickens came before checken eggs but i don't think that they did.

Evolution:
The first chicken hatched from an egg that was laid by a female of the species that was the last pre-chicken link in that evolutionary chain, thus the first chicken's egg, having existed prior even to the fertilization, thereof,  came before the first chicken.

Creation:
God said "let there be chicken" and there was chicken.

What if God said "let there be eggs" and there were eggs?

He would next have said, "Let there be bacon" and there would have been breakfast... and the Lord would have tasted of the eggs and known they were good and now everything would taste like eggs instead of tasting like chicken.    ;D

Or not.

The egg.  There were 00000s of eggs around before chickens came about.

Thanks for the help. MooRocca. I picked chicken because I'm a believer in creation.

However, God also created the egg. So it depends on where He started. ;)
If you believe in evolution, the egg.
If you believe in creation, the chicken.

??????

I have a better question.  Which came first, Chicken-hawks or wars?  Certainly our chicken-hawks (Bush, Pearl, Wolfowitz, Ruimsfeld, Rice, Cheney et al) came before Iraq.

And God tasted of the eggs benedict and found them good.  And God said "who is this "benedict" who pulled off a creation without my knowledge?  And God asked "who was it that tamed the fire used to cook the eggs benedict".  And God was confused.  And so God took a nap to relieve his/her headack.  And God sleeps still.  And evolution continues its marvelous work.

The question was "first," not "prematurely".  TMI, by the way.
