Breaking on CNN right now. It hasn't been confirmed by the Vatican yet. I think we may have just lost a great man.

RIP Pope John Paul II (1920-2005)

In a way, being a non-Catholic but married to one, I do feel close to him. Even back in 1982, when he visited England his helicopter flew over us on his way to the Wembley Staduim Mass.

Now they are saying that this is probably not the case yet, but no body really knows what's going on officially as of now. He's obviously near the end of life right now. But apparently he is still alive at the moment.

Twenty seven ago, when the previous Pope died, the press had the news first.

I have been paying attention to this all day.  I will believe he really died when the Vatican makes the announcement.  Lots of conflicting stories out there.

Vatican says Pope John Paul II is near death
CTV.ca News Staff

Pope John Paul neared death on Friday as his health worsened, with his final hours given over to prayers from Catholics around the world and here in Canada.

The Pope "is on the verge of death," Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, head of the Vatican's health care office, told a TV network.

"This evening or this night, Christ opens the door to the Pope," said Angelo Comastri, vicar general for Vatican City.

Yes, I just posted a thread in the main 2000s board regarding his passing. He just died about 30 minutes ago, at 2:37 PM EST according to the Vatican. May he rest in peace, such a sad day  :(.

This is a truly sad day, I was at home at the time I heard of the Pope's passiing. A couple of my most memorable moments in my life, where seeing the Pope during two World Youth Days (one in Manilla, one in Paris), granted there were very large crowds there, making it hard to really see awhole lot. He'll be sadly.

Rest In Peace, Pope John Paul II.  :\'(
