Subject: Viagra For Sex Offenders

Written By: Indy Gent on 05/27/05 at 11:14 am

This was on NBC Nightly News the other day. It's true, our tax dollars are being used for providing Viagra and other male sexual aids for convicted sex offenders. That's like giving a gun or knife to a convicted murderer or giving condoms to rapists. But what made me sick is that Women's rights groups are supporting this, claiming if our tax dollars are to be spent paying for Viagra, it should also pay for abortions and birth control. I don't want anybody's tax dollars spent on either or. Have they even heard of sex education?

I agree that sexual offenders should not be supplied with Viagra, but I do believe birth control shoiould be available throu medicaide.

Are you talking about the "abstinance only" sex ed advocated by the radical right?

I hate to tell you this, but our tax dollars are paying for those things already.  First of all, we pay the gov't, the gov't pays the federal/state/local employees, and as part of their compensation, they get medical insurance, and medical insurance pays for those things.  Second, the people on welfare can use their monthly checks any way they please.  And most of those on welfare have some kind of state or federal insurance that does at least pay for birth control and viagra, if not abortions.

BTW, I DO NOT think that sex offenders should have any of those perks.  I don't think they should have anything except the basic necessities.  And I think every able-bodied one of them should have to work to cover any expenses the gov't incurs, including their room and board.  If they weren't in prison or jail, that's what they would need to be doing anyway.

Hey, the only way I'd approve of this, would be if they gave them something to stop them ejaculating too, and put them in solitary confinement. I've taken Viagra before "experimentally", and believe me, if you ain't got anyone to take it out on, you have 7 hours of hell!

This is a BS distraction issue.  Something for politicians and pundits to get the lowing herds all braying about.  It doesn't amount to a hill o' beans compared to the real crises facing our nation, our world, and our ecology!!!

True enough, but sometimes, small corrective steps can lead to bigger ones.  This is an issue on which (I think) Radicles, liberals and conservatives can agree.  A place to start a diologue, and one that relates to values.

If I'm not mistaken, those who got the Viagra had served their time and were (are) on the street.

I may be wrong, and I'm too lazy to Google this, but it is my understanding, and Cat's too, that medicaide DOES NOT cover any form of contraception.  In some states it will pay for abortion.  Further, the three health insurance plans with which I have been involved do not pay for any form of birth control, but all will pay for abortions.  Moral issues aside, this seems rather stupid from just a cost perspective.  Cigna would not pay for my ex's birth control pills or her diaphram, but they would have paid lots more for the prenatal, delivery, and post-natal care of a kid we didn't want to have.  They  did pay for my Big V.  What's that about?  But given the moral issues, why is not the "Right to Life" community up in arms about this, Or do they take the position that sex is only for reproduction?

I haven't researched this topic too much, but there's been a big stink about giving Viagra to sex offenders in Kansas and Missouri as well. I    briefly read something about a convicted sex offender who raped and/or molested a victim while on state-prescribed Viagra. I thought it was one of the most insane things I've ever heard of.

I don't get where this is a smokescreen. If our government really is prescribing sexual stimulants to convicted rapists and child molesters, then we have a serious problem.  I mean, WTF???

When I was on Medical Assistance, they paid for my Depo Provera shot, which is birth control, for those who don't know.  Every other medical plan I've been on has paid for birth control, and I've been on several, just due to the fact that every time an employer decides to change insurance plans, I, or my husband has to change right along with them.

It is a bad idea to give Viagra to convicted sex offenders.  There was no legislation in place to deny convicted sex offenders Viagra.  Perhaps the legislatures can do something about it now that they've caught on to it.  It's up to Congress whether to take action federally, and up to state legislatures whether to take action in their respective states.
What I object to is the FOX Newsian OUTRAGE that goes along with these stories.  Outrage should be reserved for the fact that our government is stealing from the middle class to give to the rich and our ecology is heating up to the point where our planet may not be inhabitable.

Well, I gues you were just lucky to have the right plans.  We paid "out of pocket for my ex wife's diaphram, and earlier, for her birth controll pills.  Having never never been on "medical assistance" - do you mean medicaide? - I can't comment.  Our health insurance did pay foy my Big V operation.

There is no question that eligibility and services provided vary widely from state to state in "medicaide" financed programs, and even more so in private health insurance plan.  Mine is through Cigna, and does not cover female contraception but does cover vasectomines, ie male contraception.

Especially when it comes to young boys.  (I'd put a wink, but there is nothing funny about child molestation, and regardless of the motives of his accuser, I personally think he is guilty as he11.  I would certainly never allow a child of mine to "sleep over" at Neverland.

Sex education should not avocate abstinence. But they shouldn't condone promiscuity either. Education is for people to make their own decisions and live with the consequences. A lot of liberals must think "abstinence only" classes are the only sex ed classes available. ::)

Now there may be a motive behind this as there was a report this week in the U.K of viagra making men blind !
I'll paste the gist of the story below........

Men who use Viagra may put themselves at risk of permanent blindness, experts warn.

Researchers say there have been 14 known cases in which men have suffered a 'stroke of the eye' shortly after taking the drug used to cure impotence.

A stroke of the eye occurs when the blood flow to the optic nerve is cut off, leading to irreversible loss of vision. Experts at the University of Minnesota Medical School in the U.S. said the number of cases supported the belief that there may be a causal link between Viagra and the condition.
