Subject: Simon Wiesenthal dies

Written By: MaxwellSmart on 09/20/05 at 1:50 pm

Simon Wiesenthal was perhaps the best known "Nazi hunter."  He is credited with bringing more than 1100 members of the National Socialist Party (Nazis) to justice after World War II.  A native of the Ukraine, Wiesenthal survived the Nazi holocaust of the Jews himself, impisoned twice in Nazie concentration camps during the war.
He later founded a documentation center in Vienna for holocaust issues, and then helped found the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, which is known world over.
Wiesenthal was to some a relentless pursuer of justice, but others claimed his tactics were bullying and hateful.  He was in no way a neutral figure.
Wiesenthal died Tuesday, September 20, 2005, in Vienna following a long illness.  He was 96.

In my judgement he was a pursuer of justice - didn't he get Eichman? - and I morn his passing.

I have been working without much time to post, and am embarrased a bit that this is coming so late, but
I have to add my condolences on this.  He was a great man and a tireless worker trying to bring justice
to what was one of the supreme disgraces of the 20th century.  The term hero is passed around flippantly these days.  It should be saved for people like him.

I remember reading about him in my high school history class my freshman year.  If I'm not mistaken I think he forced NAZI's to walk along the concentration camps and take a look at all of the innocent dead victems laying on the ground in ditches.  I always admired him for doing that, for making the NAZI's feel the guilt they highly deserved to feel.

While I'm not sure his work was finished, let us all hope, pray, or hope and pray (depending on our beliefs) that there will never be a need for another "crusader" like S.W.  I'm not optimistic, but we can hope.

RIP Simon Wiesenthal...We need more people like him to speak out against hatred and intolerance of ANY kind...especially being that racism and intolerance are still around...yes I mean the KKK, Aryan Nations, White Aryan Resistance, and the like...I thought this was supposed to be the enlightened era...but I guess I was wrong in assuming that.
