Subject: Sen. William Proxmire dies

He will be missed.  He was a long time opponent of "Government Waste" and "Porkbarrel Spending", in addition to trying to pass an international anti-Genocide treaty.

I always thought him a man of honor who deserved respect, even if he was of the "other party".  He always had my respect and admiration.

He succeeded our dearly departed friend Joe McCarthy as junion senator from Wisconsin and held the seat until retiring back in 1989.  I vaguely remember Proxmire retiring.

Among the great statemens Proxmire made, most pertinent to today is:
"Power always has to be kept in check; power exercised in secret, especially under the cloak
of national security, is doubly dangerous"

He recently said of his old age:

"The last few years have been my happiest. I'm happy in the years that most people are blue and sad and waiting to die.
I don't feel that a bit. Smiling has a lot to do with it. You can just lift your spirits by smiling a little bit."
