VR: You said that the Kent State shooting sort of served as a catalyst for your theory of Devolution, which spawned Devo.
JC: Absolutely. Until then I was a hippie. I thought that the world is essentially good. If people were evil, there was justice and that the law mattered. All of those silly na

Few people even realize the protest wasn't about Vietnam. It was about bombing in Cambodia, which was an unauthorized action by Nixon. An administration with very little respect for the law.
Much like the George W. Bush administration.

the bombing of cambodia was a holocaust and the students in the u.s. responded to it as such, correctly. i read that nixon came close to rescending the constitution and declaring nationwide martial law in the wake of the cambodia bombings and the subsequent protests, which would basically have been the end of the american republic.

A sad day indeed. Unfortunately, government hasn't changed much since. :\'(

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?
Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

It never occurred to me that Devo would have vivid memories of the Kent State massacre, but it makes perfect sense.
The Kent State massacre went down just days after my birth is, symblically speaking, a terrifying welcome to the world!

It's a beautiful world!
For you!
For you!
For you!
It's not for me.
I just picked up the DEV2.0 DVD at my local Target. The lyrics have been Disneyfied. But the music is *very* good, and a whole generation of spuds is gonna grow up to download the originals and ask some very hard questions. Questions that their parents - who grew up with the originals - will be only too eager to answer.
Mark Mothersbaugh is a frickin' genius.

I'm sure that the American soldiers who were being killed in 'Nam by VC and NVA operating out of their Cambodian bases share your opinion. How dare Nixxon go after the enemy once he crossed the border? After all war is simply like a game of Monopoly or checkers, you have to play by the rules. I mean, you can't just go and attack the enemy because it is shooting at you.

The day I was born was the day of the first underground nuclear test in Nevada. I came in with a bang. ;D

How dare he attack a country without a formal decleration of war like the constitution requires. If he had evidence of it (and let's face it, there was plenty to back him up) there was no need to fight an undeclared war.
I guess you have to defend Nixon though, if you're going to also defend the same kind of behavoir in the current president. Lying about bombing a county is perfectly acceptable, so long as you don't have sex with an intern. Gotta remember that...

A bit of history...
The Cambodian campaign was conducted with the cooperation of then Cambodian head of state Lon Nol. American bombings were coordinated with Combodian Regular spotters, and South Vietnamese artillery was also called in by Cambodian Regular Army officers. The American campaign was attacking NVA and 'Cong forces located in Cambodia. Of course seeing their red friends under pressure, the Khmer Rouge, under the leadership of Pol Pot, decided to throw in their support for the NVA and Cong forces based in Cambodia.
Nobody in the US government "declared war" on Cambodia, nor would anyone have wanted to. The US had no beef with the Cambodian government. Our war was with the NVA and 'Cong, who we attacked.
Note that Lon Nol came to power in a coup in which he and another of the Cambodian ministers deposed Prince Sihanouk. Prior to this Sihanouk was walking a fine line to try and stay neutral in Indochina. His ministers saw him as being too lax towards the Khmer Rouge fanatics.
-------------------------
Post script: In a turn of events, after the US bombings stopped, the country was fair game for the Khmer Rouge to destroy from within. Things got so bad in Cambodia that eventually the Vietnamese had to invade it to straighten things out and in some odd way actually became "saviors" of Cambodia. They realized that their former ally, Pol Pot, was one bad dude and not somebody they wanted running the big country to the west.

Pol Pot was one bad dude, doesn't it make one ashamed to know that he was one that was recognized by the American government. The CIA sponsored ouster of Sihanouk and the incursions allowed by their puppet Lon Nol layed the groundwork for the takeover by The Khmer Rouge. After Lon Nol lost power and Pol Pot got in the USA and China gave Pol Pot recognition, and provided the Khmer Rouge with aid and comfort after they were deposed. The Reagan whitheouse provided aid with the thought of returning them to power. Now isn't that nice >:(

One more side point to the Cambodian story is the absolute idocy of of Prince Sihanouk. Here you have a guy who was championing restoration of the Cambodian monarchy, and yet he threw in with the Khmer Rouge against Pol Pot. As expected, he was quickly kicked to the curb by Pol Pot since monarchy is not a part of communism.
