Subject: MESSAGE FROM TEDDY....FORWARDED:

Written By: saver on 05/18/06 at 7:53 pm

it states below - I paraphrase... "predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an born-again Christian, and nothing but born-again..."  So, read on.....it's quite short but says a lot I think.

Teddy had it so right!? Not Kennedy,  Not Bush.....but Roosevelt!

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Every American citizen needs to read this!

Its right, depending on how broadly you interpret it.  The idea of what an American is is pretty diverse in the first place.  A person from New York City is going to be different to a person from Nowhere, Iowa, you know?  A Cajun is nothing like either of them.  But they are all what we consider American. Everyone who lives here should learn English, as its the common language.  But to say in America we can't have anything but English period isn't right, and its historically inaccurate.  English is the 'majority' language, and language of the national government and media, but other languages do have a history here.  Such as French, or German, and Spanish too(south Texas has had large amounts of Spanish speaker's since it first became part of the Union).

Just heard how a certainpolitician is claiming it is racist to ask everyone speak English...funny..never knew the English Language as a RACE...OTHERS CAN SPEAK THEIR OWN CULTURAL LANGUAGE AT HOME BUT WHEN ANSWERING PHONES AND DOING BUSINESS IN THE GENERAL MARKETPLACE,....WE CAN EXPECT TO KNOW WHAT IS SAID TO REDUCE ANY UNCLARITY....

Well, as far as business, I think they have the right to do business in their own languages within the community.  Like for example- in Hispanic neighborhoods it is common to see mercados, panaderias etc. I don't think it should necessarily be confined to just the home.  Regardless, everyone should know how to speak English for obvious practical reasons(getting an education, finding a job in the general job market, participating in the political process etc.).

It is possible to know both languages fluently.  Many "Tejanos"(Texan Mexican-Americans whose family has been in Texas since it first joined the Union) do.  Down in the rio grande valley Spanish is spoken extensively, but most people(except perhaps within the immigrant segment of the population) who speak it also speak English.

Ay-yi-yi! I wouldn't have hyperlinked it if I'd known it was Tripod! I hate Tripod. Funny thing is, I usually know when it's a Tripod site because of the obnoxious popups, but I didn't get nailed that time!

According to some sources, during the debate over the slavery clause in the Declaration of Independance, John Adams, refering to an objection to calling  blacks Americans, said "They are people and they are here, I haven't heard of any other qualification."  But, of course, in those days we let anybody in, even the Irish  ;).  It was only during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries that we became exclusive, coincidentally at the height of both the eugenics movement and of the popularity of Social Darwinism (ever hear of the Chinese Exclusion Act?).  Why should there be quotas on the number of people from each country that can legally enter this country?  Eliominate the quotas and you eliminate illegal alians (mostly) and the cayotes and businessmen who exploit them.  As to Teddy, his formula is simplistic.  Read up on the history and sociology of immigrants.

Are you saying we should work on this problem the OLD way?
Simplistic helps clear the problem so it may be reviewed...Time have changed,we don't use muskets anymore so why use old methods of control...it got us to where we are now..and now that we have planes, more people can arrive..I only object to the illegals..no matter how anyone tries to paint it as amnesty or guest..I too see a guest plan of some sort but the bottom line of that control is to fine the employers BIG TIME..but the heads of govmt. are part of that picture for big business suppliers...

I object to all immigration.  I think we should end any further immigration.

Immigrants built the country.  So what?  We're built now.  We can't continue to bring people in just because that is what we've done in the past.  Times change.  Right now with the tens of millions of Boomers getting ready to retire, we really need to focus on our own problems rather than bringing more people in to take care of.
