A court session has given the verdict in the trial of ex-leader Saddam Hussein for crimes against humanity.

I can't say that I feel bad about this.

I would prefer life in prison.  When(if) sadaam actually is executed he will become a mythic figure in the war against the west.  Because this whole scenario was engineered by the US, I believe within 5 years,Arabs of all sects will see this as a metaphor for the western take over of their lands and cultures.  To put him in prison would be more of a castration of his power.

Anyway, I imagine that by now the shi'ite women are out in the streets uulating wildly, whilst their hubbys are plotting their next rampage by fire bombing the local sunni mosque.  Likewise the sunni women are uulating in tears while their hubbies are yelling at them to get back inside and finish the explosive belt they were making on the sewing machine, so that their teenage son can make a surprise visit to the local Sunni mosque and claim his 72 virgins in the afterlife.  And meanwhile, Osama is laughin' his azz off.

Not physical, imprisonment would be a political castration of his power and influence.  With death comes martyrdom, if he is alive but made politically impotent then he will be seen as too weak and ineffectual to have retained power.

Just been hearing reports on the radio on that very subject, excellent timing?

  What I want to know is how the devil they arrived at a verdict..?

  Was there even one day where the trial wasn't shut down by Saddam ranting-on; some uproar with the lawyers; some nonsense with the judge; or somebody vital to the proceedings being shot or kidnapped or blowed-up real good..?

  I think they got it all ass backward, myself...

  They should put him back on the "throne", use the $2 bil a week currently being thrown down a hole to no good effect to rebuild the Iraqi army, then Saddo & Sam team up to trounce Iran..!

  Then hang Rummy in his place..! groove ;) on...

I agree with you. The whole thing makes me very nervous. As Davester mention, it was basically a kangeroo court and I think it is going to cause more harm than good.

As much as I won't miss him, killing him will only make a hero and a martyr, putting in him in jail, would probally work, but it would still make a hero and a martyr.  A classic catch 22, if there ever was one.

I don't believe in capital punishment, so I'm not happy with the verdict.

Maybe they should just drop him off on a far away island and let him survive without food, fresh water and the comforts of his former palace. Then we can just assume two things - either he's dead or he's discovered a new country to dictate.

That may not be a bad idea but I wouldn't leave him there alone. He should have the company of his buddies: Bush, Cheney, & Rummy.

I think that's what they should do with all of these sex offenders too...take them all, drop them on an island so that they can fend for themselves. ;)  Good plan!

Saddam is a horrible man, but I\'m against all violent punishment of any form. Boo.

The Bush Administration has as much to fear from the World Court as Saddam.  The former has no more moral authority than the latter.  The only reason the Bushies have not rounded up thousands of Americans and murdered them in the street is it has not yet been necessary.  I suppose you could argue its also a bad PR move, but when the extreme right controls the corporate media, you'd be surprised how much info the can suppress or simply spin as benign.
