Subject: Condemnation

I debated which forum to post this in, as it's partially political and partially just 'Pop Culture' but I think the political message within is important.
Say what you will about Slayer, but watch this and tell me what you think of the war.

I saw a lot of images of soldiers, war, and what I assume are the soldier's children in happy images. I was fuzzy on some of the lyrics because of the way the Slayer guy is singing. What do you think the message is?

The toll that war takes on a man. Notice. He's a soldier when he see's some of those images like the guy on the floor dieing, the explosions, being shot at.. but then he goes back to being a normal man, seeing his children, but it keeps happening over and over again. Many soldiers coming back from combat zones suffer from this. My Father was in Norther Ireland and saw two kids essentially vaporized by a bomb, when I was young I remember hearing him shouting all sorts of bizare things in his sleep telling them to get away.
At the end of the video you can see the kids walking past the entrance to the garage not aware that their Father has hung himself.. listen at the end, watch as the eye sways, he's hanging from a rope.

I thought you were talking about the Depeche Mode song when I read your title.
I know you're gonna hit me for that. ;D
As Rice said, I was the one who had to explain it to him. It's very sad what these guys have to face, especially now, when they SHOULDN'T EVEN BE OVER THERE.

Amen to that!
I can't view the video from work, but I get the gist from your description. And even though I am not a huge fan of Slayer's music, I love their commentary on the world. I've seen several interviews with their lead singer, and he kicks ass.

Kerry is the public face normally, where did you see Tom. (South american guy, black/grey beard right?)
Yes, the basic gist, as I think has already been put across. You're seeing through the 'eyes of the insane' as it were, what he's witnessed and what keeps playing back through his mind. People don't realise that this is far more common than is thought.

yaeh, that's pretty good, although the jihad one is really amazing. that took guts.
i was a big fan of flags of our fathers as a good shell-shock movie about war and what it does to you.

My grandfather suffered from that. My mom said that when she was younger, they'd have to watch him if he was napping or something, because he'd start having nightmares about Vietnam and start screaming or yelling. He didn't wind up like the guy in the video though.
I'm not sure if my other grandfather did that, but considering where he was in WWII (The Pacific), he probably did.

my grandfather on my mother's side, who was a bombardier in wwii and korea, and my uncle on my father's side, who trained to be a helicopter pilot in vietnam, are both pretty haunted by their war experience. dad on my father's side worked in an aircraft plant during wwii and so got out of having to go to the field, and my dad i believe got a college deferment or maybe he wasn't the right age, he never got drafted for 'nam.
