Great News!!!!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070515/ap_on_re_us/jerry_falwell

Hopefully he'll die, that'll give the Christian Right something to talk about whilst us rational people get on with electing a leader.

;D

First, my respects to Mr. Falwell.

2nd, Here are some greats of Mr Falwell.  We need more like him.    :D

Snippets taken from yahoo news.

Days after Sept. 11, 2001, Falwell essentially blamed feminists, gays, lesbians and liberal groups for bringing on the terrorist attacks. He later apologized.

In 1999, he told an evangelical conference that the Antichrist was a male Jew who was probably already alive. Falwell later apologized for the remark but not for holding the belief. A month later, his National Liberty Journal warned parents that Tinky Winky, a purple, purse-toting character on television's "Teletubbies" show, was a gay role model and morally damaging to children.

Falwell was re-energized after family values proved important in the 2004 presidential election. He formed the Faith and Values Coalition as the "21st Century resurrection of the Moral Majority," to seek anti-abortion judges, a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and more conservative elected officials.

In 2006, Falwell marked the 50th anniversary of his church and spoke out on stem cell research, saying he sympathized with people with medical problems, but that any medical research must pass a three-part test: "Is it ethically correct? Is it biblically correct? Is it morally correct?"

Falwell had once opposed mixing preaching with politics, but he changed his view and in 1979, founded the Moral Majority. The political lobbying organization grew to 6.5 million members and raised $69 million as it supported conservative politicians and campaigned against abortion, homosexuality, pornography and bans on school prayer.

ALRIGHT!!!

Excellent, the bastard is dead!

Falwell was as close as anybody's gonna get to the antichrist. I hope when they bury him, he falls out of the coffin and his head falls off.

I realize I'm displaying an exceptionally low level of tact here, but I really don't care, I'm glad he's dead, he was a dangerous man with sick ideas and his death is a further step towards taking America back from the Christian Moral Majority sorts who are running it in the ground.

Poor Falwell, what do i know about him :-\\
He sued Hustler magazine...there's a good film about that, yeah everything i know it's from the movies :-really think Falwall engaged in sexual congress with his mother in an outhouse (then again, maybe he did).  What Falwell hated was that people would via suggestion picture such a scenario in their own minds.
Falwell versus Flynt would generate national media exposure.  The media would have to say why Falwell was suing in order to tell the story, so right away twenty times as many people pictured Falwell and his mom in the outhouse as would have if Falwell had just let the joke die in the pages of "Hustler."
The case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, Falwell lost, Flynt became a First Amendment hero, and the court set a precedent.
As soon as the case was settled, the publishers of journalism and law textbooks started calling Larry Flynt Publications to ask permission to reprint the ad parody.  Of course, Flynt said, "Sure!  Go right ahead and all the best to you!"
This guaranteed a generation or more of students studying journalism, media ethics, and First Amendment law would see the article and picture Falwell and his mom in the outhouse!
Publicity from Falwell v. Hustler played no small part in solidifying Larry Flynt's fame and infamy.  So, when Milos Foreman made "The People vs. Larry Flynt," a box office smash in 1996, the Falwell character played a major role, and millions upon millions more people got to picture Falwell and his mom in the outhouse!
And how many more new viewers will watch the movie for decades to come?

Now you see one reason the Christian Right wants to pack the judiciary with Bible-thumpers.  If Falwell won the suit, God's chosen people would have driven that smut peddler out of business!  But under the "far left liberal" Burger Court, that was not to be!
:D

I've used that one, also National Petroleum Radio.
NPR is hard-right on economic issues, and mushy centrist on social issues.
Yeah, Terry Gross might think "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" was the greatest thing since sliced bread, but NPR kisses Wall Street azz just like the New York Times and the rest of the so-called "liberal media"!

I can't say I ever liked Jerry Falwell, but I wouldn't have wished him dead (Pat Robertson is another matter...). While the man was at the extreme opposite end of most of my views, he did one very important thing in his life that pertains to me: his lawsuit vs Hustler magazine. Through his loss he helped set/reinforced a legal precedent for parody, one in favor of it, which is something I definitely appreciate.

Gotta find something nice to say about the dead.  :D

Easy.  "Jerry Falwell is dead."  Sounds pretty nice to me.

The most surprising thing about This Week In Dead/Dying Televangelists is that I feel more sympathy for Tammy Freakin' Faye Bakker (who's not dead yet, but working on it in rather grotesque and painful fashion by means of terminal cancer) than I do for Jerry.

Tammy, to her credit, never got back into the scam she was running with Jim, and she at least appears to have accepted her role in pop culture as a parody of herself.  Insofar as I can see, that's a hell of a lot closer to genuine repentance than Falwell ever achieved.  Then again, facing one's own death tends to have a clarifying effect, and Jerry went quickly enough that... well, we just don't know, and we never will.

So in the spirit of "Judge not, lest ye be judged", I'll say only this for Jerry:  He could have repented in the his last 30 seconds of gasping, panicked, heaving, terrorized, CO2-building-up-in-the-blood panicked frenzy.  If that's good enough for Jesus (and judging from his reputed conversation with some guy hanging on the tree next to him, it was), then it's good enough for me.  And if Jesus doesn't exist anymore (becuase he was just a nice guy who died 2000 years ago), that's still enough for me, even though it no longer matters.

But since I wasn't there (what a pity, I'd have uploaded it to YouTube by now!) to witness Jerry's final fishlike floor floppings (my inner spoiled brat hopes that he keeled over while straining to take a dump, striving to go out like St. Elvis) and his last feathery breaths, the question of whether or not he actually repented of his sins is, alas, none of my business.

Jerry's not our problem anymore.  His successors, on the other hand, those are the guys to worry about. To paraphrase an old Prophet: "Falwell may be dead, but his shadow will be shown on cave walls for decades. Vanquishing that is the hard part."

Remember this about Jim and Tammy:

The PTL was the most innocuous of the Christian Right organizations.  I don't know if Jessica Hahn was telling the truth or not, but it seems odd to me she only started shrieking about Jim Bakker "ravaging" her, after her hush money got cut off.  A young lady of principle she was!  They also busted the Bakkers for some real estate scam involving the holy roller resort they were building.  However, it was not clear anybody was actually going to be ripped off, and it was not the investors who were bellyaching.

At the same time, guys like Charles Keating and Neil Bush were cheating old folks out of their lifesavings in the S&L scandals!

I'm not a PTL guy myself, but the Bakkers sure looked like nice folks compared to the rest of the right-wing in the '80s!

Furthermore, one of Jerry Falwell's acts of Christian magnanimity was advising Jim Bakker to sign over his assets to Falwell's organization so the feds couldn't get to his fortune.  Falwell lied.  He ratted the Bakkers out and pocketed the loot himself.
(It might not have gone down exactly like this, but I don't have time to research it at the moment.)
::)

When Tammy Faye Bakker does die, she will get the best makeover she ever had!

Falwell was a perfected Christian. He exuded Christian love for all men, hating sin while loving sinners. This is as opposed to liberals, who just love sinners.
Now, who does that remind you of?

Or if I did by accident, I'd wipe it off...

Notice that La Coulter has to say "Christian" love... couldn't have it being any other sort, now, could we?

I dont know whether to laugh or puke.  Although this kind of stuff does make me laugh to myself for their stupidty and blindness, it still makes me sick that they can even think such things.

I know exactly what you mean: I often felt that way with Ms Terhune's witterings.

I didn't really know who Falwell was until hearing a bit of an obit on the radio this afternoon... then seeing a thread about him on another forum somebody pointed out something Ann Coulter said in her blog, which contains the following:
Now, who does that remind you of?

OK, Ann, I couldn't go more than two sentences on Falwell without ridiculing the Christian Right, and you couldn't go more than two sentences on Falwell without ridiculing liberals.
We're even.

Kim Richards is famous and is worshiped by civilized people.  People like Ann and Paris are a dime a dozen . . . Kim is a Goddess. :)

::)

When Tammy Faye Bakker does die, she will get the best makeover she ever had!

Tammy  hanging out with Ron Jeromy on the "Series Life".  That was truly heartwarming.  Those two never agreed on anything, but yet they liked each other. :)

Calling a stubborn man stubborn is not speaking ill of the dead.  Calling a pious, stubborn man a crotchety old bastard is...

It's hard to not speak ill of someone like, say, Falwell, but I'm satisfied to have shared a grin and a bong with a friend over the dead Rev's name...

To the other, though, Larry Flynt is officially exempted: if he'd wheeled up to the Rev's hospital room to cuss the holy-roller to the last breath, I couldn't say Falwell didn't deserve it....

I have just finished watching God on My Side, a documentary by Australian journalist Andrew Denton. It may be tough to track down outside of Australia, but you can find out more about it here: http://shop.abc.net.au/browse/product.asp?productid=743984. Denton went to the National Religious Broadcasters convention in Texas to find out more about evangelism. The stuff he presents here made me laugh, then get angry and finally made me quite scared. I highly recommended this to everyone.

Absolutely, let his fuggin' family do the grieving!
Who among us invited Falwell to sic his vicious dogma on everybody else?  Who invited him to the party?
He got Bedtime-for-Ronzo all drunk on reactionary zealotry and apocalyptic fervor. He sowed seeds of the neo-con trainwreck we're stuck with today, the one that is jeopardizing the very survival of our democratic republic itself.
When the Gipper died, I said some nice things about him, out of courtesy not sincerity, and I wished I hadn't.

Interesting to note, Falwell and Flynt later hit the lecture circuit together.
Falwell did for Christianity what Flynt did for the female body!

Anybody hear/read the CNN article about the Liberty Univ (Falwell's univ) student who was going to use some bombs against protesters of the funeral?  Here's part of what I could find:

Mark David Uhl's intended target is unknown
• ABC News reporting his goal: Ensure protesters don't disrupt Falwell funeral
• Uhl's family members called police, said he mentioned explosives
• Authorities found six explosive devices in 19-year-old Uhl's car

LYNCHBURG, Virginia (CNN) -- A first-year Liberty University student was arrested in what police said was a plot to detonate explosive devices Tuesday, the day of the Rev. Jerry Falwell's funeral.

Mark David Uhl's intended target is unknown, authorities said.

ABC News reported the youth told authorities he had made the bombs -- which were found in his car -- to stop protesters from disrupting Falwell's funeral. (Read the story about Falwell's funeral)

Police received a call about 11 p.m. Monday from one of Uhl's family members, who said they had talked with him and he had "mentioned some explosive devices he had made," said Maj. Steve Hutcherson of the Campbell County, Virginia, sheriff's office.

Authorities found in Uhl's vehicle "what appeared to be about six explosive devices" that had detonation devices with them, Hutcherson said. The homemade devices were canisters with some kind of liquid inside.

A Virginia State Police bomb squad was summoned to ensure the items were safe, he said.

Uhl, 19, from Amissville, Virginia, was arrested at the home of one of his friends in Campbell County, near Lynchburg, Hutcherson said.

He was being held without bond in the Campbell County Adult Detention Center on suspicion of manufacturing explosive devices.

"Anytime you have somebody with what appears to be explosive devices, you have to take that threat seriously," Hutcherson said.
