Subject: Get on the Atheist Bus!

Written By: MrCleveland on 01/07/09 at 2:48 pm

This is from Telegraph.co.uk....

Atheist adverts declaring that "there's probably no God" have been placed on 800 buses around Britain after an unprecedented fundraising campaign.

Organisers originally hoped to put the message on just a handful of London buses, as an antidote to posters put up by religious groups which they claimed were "threatening eternal damnation" to non-believers.

But after the campaign received high-profile support from the prominent atheist Prof Richard Dawkins and the British Humanist Association, the modest £5,500 target was met within minutes and more than £140,000 has now been donated since the launch in October.

Enough money has now been raised to place the message – "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life" – on 200 bendy buses in the capital for a month, with the first ones taking to the streets .

A further 600 buses carrying the adverts will be seen by passengers and passers-by in cities across England, Wales and Scotland, from Aberdeen and Dundee to York, Coventry, Swansea and Bristol.

In addition, two large LCD screens bearing the atheist message have been placed in Oxford Street, central London, while 1,000 posters containing quotes from well-known non-believers will be placed on Underground trains for two weeks starting on Monday.

They feature lines doubting the existence of God, and celebrating the natural world, written by Albert Einstein, Katharine Hepburn, Douglas Adams and Emily Dickinson.

It is the first ever atheist advertising campaign to take place in Britain, and similar adverts are now also running on public transport in America and Spain.

Ariane Sherine, a writer who first thought of the atheist bus adverts, said: "You wait ages for an atheist bus, then 800 come along at once. I hope they will brighten people's days and make them smile on their way to work."

The campaign has even been welcomed by religious groups for increasing the profile of debate about faith, and although there was tight security outside the launch event by the Royal Albert Hall, the campaigners have not received any threats from fundamentalists.

Paul Woolley, director of Theos, a theology think tank which donated £50 to the cause, said: "The posters will encourage people to consider the most important question we will ever face in our lives."

Some atheist supporters of the campaign were disappointed that the wording of the adverts did not declare categorically that God does not exist, although there were fears that this could break advertising guidelines.

Prof Dawkins, the renowned evolutionary biologist and author of The God Delusion, said: "I wanted something stronger but with hindsight I think it's probably a good thing because it makes people think. It's just food for thought – people will have conversations in pubs when they see these buses."

Hanne Stinson, chief executive of the British Humanist Association, said the adverts were "overwhelmingly positive" and were intended to reassure agnostics and atheists that there is nothing wrong with not believing in God.

cool! they should do something like that here. it would be fun to see the evangelicals get all blue in the face.

(i actually think there probably IS a god, though, just not a white dude with a beard like i'm always hearing about.)

Being the devil's advocate here, 'cause i think the bus campaign is kind of cool.

In the western world how bad do atheists or agnostics really have it? Plus blaming the root of all evil on religion is pretty stupid.
We all just need to be more chill and truly respect eachother, it's not hard to do at all.

wadded evangelical panties are exactly the point, i'd have thought.  :D they're debating taking all mention of god out of the presidential oath, did you hear about that?

That's my stance, but nobody wants to play nice anymore in the religion/nonreligion ring. :P

Mentioning a god (or not) should be up to the person who is taking the oath, not anyone else.  Isn't that douchenozzle Newdow guy suing about it or something?

that's what I'd do if I'd won the $207  ;D

I'm all for it!  For too long the so-called Christians are spreading their word to all who will listen...and to many of us who really don't want to hear it..... I say turnabout is fair play!

the only problem is that we ath's and ag's have to be ones doing the accepting.... those uber religious... not people of faith but the crazy bible thumpers who want to convert the world are not happy letting people live their lives.

see I say if religion works for you I'm very happy- I have many friends who have faith... but the only reasons they are my friends is they respect my lack of faith as much as I respect their right to have faith....

I have only gotten in fights (over religion) with people who get mad because I don't want to buy what they are selling...... sorry but I refuse to drink  the koolaid

It's a shame that athiests would have to resort to slogans on busses to counteract the religious zeal in an area, but so be it. Can't say I haven't wanted to erect a billboard saying "There is no God" on I-85 near the NC/VA border to counter the huge numbers of signs that say otherwise.

The interstate is about the only place I pray!
:o

You know, this atheist ad campaign is just as obnoxious as Jesus Saves.  I'm an agnostic myself, I just have an aversion to people shoving their beliefs in other people's faces.

I just got a great idea for a website: Atheist Bus!

It'll be like Bang Bus meets Jean-Paul Sartre.  Me and my buddies pick up strangers and make them admit there is no God and life has no meaning, than we dump them on the highway with nothingness!

But surely all buses are atheist?  Have you ever heard of a bus believing in God?

I was going to google "bang bus", but as I'm at work, I'm kinda guessing it's not safe...

It is a bit of a one-way street at times: people should be free to shout about their faith, but not their lack of it..

If that bus ever rolls through KC I'll be waiting for it on the side of the road with a carton of eggs.

And I'll be wearing a T-shirt that says "EGGS FOR JESUS."  ;D

It's probably not "safe" for your home computer either.  Commercial pr0n sites give you cyber-STDs.

After being saturated with Christian Evangelical stuff the Atheist bus is kind of refreshing.  My opinion of God is that there is a higher power however I'm not arrogant enough to describe it let alone have a "personal relationship".

Actually, there is a campaign that was started up in Seattle.  It didn't exactly receive the same positive response this one did though.

The Denver chapter of Atheists was going to put up billboards during the holidays, but like I said, someone got their pannies in a wad, and I don't know if it ever happened.

Breaking news...

The Daily Torygraph"]The advertising watchdog is being called upon to rule on the likelihood of God's existence after complaints were made about the atheist bus advert campaign.

...

However Stephen Green, the Christian campaigner who led the protests against the BBC's broadcast of Jerry Springer – The Opera, is claiming they should be taken down because the statement in the adverts cannot be substantiated.

He said: "If you're going to put out what appears to be a factual statement then you have to be able to back it up. They've got to substantiate this proposition that in all probability, God doesn't exist."
