Subject: New Mexico abolishes death penalty

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/03/18/new.mexico.death.penalty/index.html

"Regardless of my personal opinion about the death penalty, I do not have confidence in the criminal justice system as it currently operates to be the final arbiter when it comes to who lives and who dies for their crime."

--Gov. Bill Richardson

Not to worry, death penalty fans still have 35 states with capital punishment on the books...and there's always Houston!

I'd imagine the cost of the appeals process probably had a lot to do with them dropping it.

Bill usually does the right thing.  If somethings not solid he has his doubts.

Bill Richardson rocks. If it hadn't been for Obama, I probably would have rooted for him in the Democratic primaries.

They are working on it in New Hampshire now.  They haven't executed anyone since 1939, but now they are set to execute the only man on death row, who just happens to be black.  Now we can all wonder why since 1939 they haven't felt the need to execute anyone, but anyone who knows anything about New Hampshire isn't surprised at this.

Assuming it's about race without evidence is a bit illogical, eh?

Nevertheless, New Hampshire's libertarian leanings would probably make it likely for them to abolish the death penalty, since that is more consistent with small government.
