Subject: Lamarr Alexander and Obamas' "Enemies List"

Written By: danootaandme on 10/21/09 at 9:56 am

Lamarr Alexander is accusing the Obama Administration of beginning an enemies list because the administration is looking into stripping the insurance industry of its exemption from anti-trust laws.  Isn't it just like a Repug.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top Republican invoked the memory of the scandal-marred Nixon administration on Wednesday to urge U.S. President Barack Obama to "back up" and not "start an enemies list."

Senator Lamar Alexander told Reuters he has begun to see the Obama White House adopting an attitude similar to that of the Richard Nixon White House four decades ago, that "everybody is against us and we are going to get them."

Alexander cited as examples the Obama administration's suggestion that it may support stripping the insurance industry of its exemption of federal anti-trust laws, its clash with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the president saying he will call out people who oppose him and boycott Fox News network.

Alexander, a member of the congressional Republican leadership, said he is "suggesting that the president back up" and "don't start an enemies list."

Alexander made the comments at the Reuters Washington Summit, a series of interviews with key Washington figures, in advance of a speech that he plans to give later in the day on the same topic on the Senate floor.

I bet that Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and Sean Hanity are on it.

That is, if it actually does exsit.

Regarding the administration's recent "attacks" on the Fox News Network...

Strategically this is a dumb move by the administration, and there is little "upside" regardless of if you support Fox or not.

It only serves to increase Fox viewership, which is the opposite of what the adminstration would like to see.
It brings Fox up to the president's level in the game.  The fact that the administration addresses Fox in a singular way means that they feel that Fox is influential and a threat.

Administration figures would be strategically better off NOT attacking Fox because there is little chance of a positive payoff for them.  On the other hand, I imagine that Fox is relishing the attention and increased ratings. Ratings = $$$

It would be rather ironic if Obama and Axelrod owned stock in News Corporation.

I think you right except for O' Reiilly because Obama did do an interview with him.

The Obama White House better be careful of this enemies list because of what happened with the Nixon White House as Lamar Alexander has said.

Rachel Maddow also had some interesting insights.

Looks like we dumped an LBJ for a Richard Nixon. (A guy who declared war for no reason and a guy with an enemies list...respectfully).

LBJ declared war because he inherited Vietnam from Eisenhower and Kennedy. Kennedy increased the amount of military personnel in Vietnam from 800 in 1961 to 16,000 the day he died. If LBJ just pulled out in 1965, it would've made the US look really weak, like the French had when they pulled out. What LBJ did wrong was he tried to dictate the actions of the Generals instead of just letting them do what they do best. He also paid way too much attention to popular opinion, which is why there were gradual increases in the amount of troops--what he should've done was deployed 600,000 or so there to start with, rather than gradually building up to that number. He also held the army's hands in order to decrease the civilian casualties, which hindered their ability to fight the enemy.

Yup. He didn't care about casualties, or protesters, whereas Johnson was affected by both greatly. I read recently Johnson left the White House and lived out his final years as a broken man. He even grew his hair long.
