Subject: Vietnam 2.0

Well, it looks like we'll be in Afghanistan quite a while longer.  30,000 more troops isn't the change I believe in.

So far it's just words but it sounds from tonight's speech that Obama really wants to get'er done and GTFO.

I'm scared too, but I really hope you're wrong.

We're gonna end the war in Afghanistan by escalating troops.  "War is Peace."  Good morning, Big Brother!

All that has to happen is a big old guerrilla attack in Kabul next January and--SHAZAM--we're there for another ten years!

This shouldn't come as a surprise to people.  Obama said throughout pretty much the entire campaign last year that he wanted to shift the focus from the Iraq War to the Afghanistan War.  While I don't particularly support it, especially with how corrupt Karzai's government is, he's doing something he said he was going to do.

I think the best we could do would be to form an escort party for women, chlidren, and elderly, and lead them to a safe place.  Give the guys all the weapons they want, wait a week.

Sadly true.  Afghanistan and Iraq have both suffered from the same thing Vietnam suffered from - inability to tell who is an enemy or not.  Anyone can commit a suicide bombing.  Heck, the women in burquas are the perfect way to do a suicide bombing since the bombs are hidden behind the cloth and you can't lift up the cloth without committing a serious religious transgression that could get you killed by radicals.

We are occupying a country we should not be occupying in the first place.  It's a lose/lose situation for us AND for the Afghans.  The only ones who stand to gain anything at all are the defense contractors.  We're going to have to just get out.

This is not war.  It is occupation.  It is empire.  Empires come to grievous ends, and that is what is happening to the American empire.
