Subject: US government looks like it's moving to remove "don't ask, don't tell" policy

Written By: Satish on 02/05/10 at 4:44 pm

Seems like the fairest thing to do for people serving in the military.

When I was in the A.F. back in the 80s, (BEFORE Don't ask, Don't tell-where you COULD ask) my supervisor was gay-everyone knew it.  She didn't flaunt it or anything like that-you just know. But she was the BEST supervisor I had in my entire A.F. career.

My point is that gays have been serving in the military since the beginning of time. Anybody who has served in the military knows this-knew at least one person who was and it just doesn't matter. For those who it DOES matter to, are just homophobic. It is plain and simple. And the arguments they use are the exact same arguments that were used when Harry Truman desegregated the military.

It's about time.  However I think they're still going to drag their heels on it.  Gates wants hearing.

I don't have much problem with gays in the military, with one exception.

The "flaming sissy" type (I have had the displeasure of having to work with two of them) aren't gonna work out in the services; they are not going to command the respect of your average soldier (and I suspect that would include you average gay soldier too).  You know the type, constantly complaining, grown men who act like little girls, completely self centered narcissistic attention whores. I never understood how the whole gay thing got confused with men who think they have to behave like little girls.  That's not being gay, it's being effeminate... those guys have a gender identity issue.  (Side note, I've never run onto a gay woman who had this annoying trait or similar).

So other than that exception, what the heck.  I've worked with many gay men and women who did good work and were loyal, reliable, etc... what you generally want in a soldier.

It does sound like Gates is gonna drag his feet on this though...

There are a lot of "sissy" women as well as "sissy" heterosexual men in the military, too. I worked with a few of them. Most of those people (flamers included) wash out because they can't cut it. I wouldn't call myself a "sissy" but sometimes I wonder how I managed to stay in as long as I did. I am not what would be consider as "military material." I am too much of a free spirit and such a peacenik.
