Subject: Republicans in 1994 and now

Written By: Ryan112390 on 07/19/10 at 7:32 pm

I was reading the Usenet archives, and this post stuck out to me:

''  "A lot of people say there's too much personal freedom.  When personal
freedom's being abused, you have to move to limit it."
President Clinton as quoted on MTV, April 19, 1994
ZOE LOFGREN and PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON have a lot in common. How much has
BILL CLINTON and the Democrat agenda HURT this great land of ours? How
many of our Rights have been taken away by the current administration for
one reason or another? By voting for ZOE LOFGREN, you will be allowing
the same old thing. The Democrat Party has been in power and has been
raising our taxes for socialist programs for the past 40 years in both
the House and Senate. We need a change, not more of ZOE LOFGREN and BILL
CLINTON.
LYLE SMITH will make a difference if he is elected. He is from OUR
community, has the SAME concerns that concern US. We have to many Lawyers
and millionaires in Washington. LYLE SMITH is a middle income man wanting
to fight for you, our children and our families. What does ZOE LOFGREN
and PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON want to do besides raise our taxes and spend
our money all in the name of
RE-INVENTING GOVERNMENT? They want to re-invent SOCIALISM and bring it
here to OUR GREAT LAND.
Come and see what Lyle Smith of the 16th Congressional District wants to
do for you and OUR community and our country."

Change some names and you get the same GOP talking points 16 years later.

Gingrich started in 1982 but was considered an obnoxious wingnut.  We had Reaganomics and the Iran-Contra scandal in the '80s, but the GOP had the Presidency and the Senate.  Then Bill Clinton won the Presidency in 1992.  This was a partisan defeat for the Republicans, but not a philosophical one.  However, the GOP made Clinton out to be something like a cross between Larry Flynt and Joe Stalin.  In the so-called "Republican Revolution" of 1994 all that really happened was the GOP got their first bicameral majority in forty years and they went stark-raving crazy with Newt Gingrich and Speaker and the "Contract with America" (aka. "The Contract on America," "The Newt Deal."  Rush Limbaugh had 20 hours a week, including his TV show, to spew reactionary rage against Clinton.  That's when the lunatics really started running the asylum.

Well correction yes the Republicans did controlled the Senate in the 80's(that was 1981-1986) but the Dems took took back the Senate in the 1986 mid-terms and controlled the Senate from 1987-1994 till the Gingrich/Republican Revolution in the 1994 mid terms as you pointed out in your post.

The Lunatics: At least Gingrich could do a budget and spend money wisely and was partly responsible to a budget surplus aside from Bill Clinton!! Can Nancy Pelosi? She has spent so much money snice she became Speaker of the House in January 2007. I'm appalled at how this current administration just throw billions and millions of dollars of money around like its nothing.Bedfore you say Bush(w.) spent alot of money Obama is spending in 1 year what Bush (W.) spent in 2 years. I mean Obama makes Bush(W.) look like a penny pincher. :(          Yes sadly!

sorry, but Obama hasn't spent anywhere near what GWB did.  Not to mention he has the worst economy in decades to deal with, and a loss of revenue thanks to all the tax breaks for GWB's rich friends.  The Republican formula of cutting taxes, increased spending, and decreased regulations is what has gotten us to where we are now.

You guys keep on saying that on the left wing that it was tax cuts for the rich, ok true the rich did a tax cut under Bush(W.) I won't deny that. You fail to mention that other people oin other income brackets also got a tax cut too.

My problem with the Bush(w.) tax cuts are the following: they weren;t paid for and basketball players like Kobe Bryant or Lebron James don;t need a tax cut I mean they are milliionares. If Bush(w.) were to give a tax cut for people who  make 150,000 dollars a year and below it would have been fine.

Decreased Regulations: Hello Barney Frank and Chris Dodd(i.e. Fannie and Freddie!) Yes I blame the Replublicans too because the Republicans voted for the repeal of Glass-Stegall- in 1999 which they shouldn;t have done that was another factor that caused this crisis.

Come on Obama and Pelosi are spending machines I mean Bush(W.) defecits never went over 5% of GDP, Obama's defecits do! I mean Obama never paid 1 penny up front for his 787 billion dollar stimulus bill. :(

Good point.  I should have clarified.  In 1986, when Reagan was a lame duck and the damage had been done, the Dems won a sweeping 5-seat majority in the house!

about those tax cuts

look at the projections.  those tax cuts are almost half of the deficit spending, with the remainder going to the wars (remember those? talk about spending) and recovery funds (which will no longer be spent as of next year).. all Bush initiatives.

so um yeah, Bush was a total spending machine.  Obama would have to try a lot harder to match him at this point.

It's okay to spend big, just so long as the poor don't get any!
