Subject: End of the world on May 21 2011

Written By: joeman on 05/17/11 at 11:51 pm

That`s when Harold Camping - the leader of the family radio ministry - is confidently predicting some 200-million chosen believers will be instantly raptured to Heaven.

He says the world will then end 3 months later on October 21st.

Camping is an expert since he predicted the same thing happening back on September 4, 1994. He`s adamant that he got the date right this time.

Here`s how camping does the math. Noah`s great flood happened 7-thousand years ago. 2nd Peter says a day for God is like a thousand human years. Seven days times one-thousand equals.... yup! May 21, 2011!

Of course this Y2K moment affords atheists and non-believers another platform to scoff at the idea of an "end of days" prediction. We`re all going to be dead soon anyway as the theory goes, so why not go out with a bang at a fabulous rapture party?

The non-profit 'American atheists' is throwing several such fetes in Houston, Fort Lauderdale and Oakland, California.

If you somehow survive the apocalypse on May 21st, you`d better start planning for the next one December 21, 2012, the day the Mayan calendar ends is just around the corner!

These bozos actually have an entire TV channel where I live.

The bozo-in-chief...

http://imgboot.com/images/herbutsmelz/animatedbiblethumper.gif

...has a deep gravelly voice, and if my eyes are closed, I swear I can hear a hint of William S. Burroughs in his voice.  He's definitely as loopy as WSB, until you realize the guy - even though he called for the end of the world in 1994 and got it wrong - is dead serious.  (I mean Camping, not Burroughs.  Burroughs was able to manage simultaneous loopiness with being dead serious too, but he was actually right about stuff.)

I thought these Raptards were just a California phenomenon, but it turns out they've gone from New York...

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5161/5341283208_550d7687cb.jpg

to... wherever these were taken:

http://www.watchmanreport.com/images/spirit/religion/christianity/rapture/billboard_thumb4.jpg

http://rationalists.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/jesusbillboard_640_480.jpg

...they've managed to troll half the world.

I can't wait until Sunday - or Monday - or whenever (if-ever) they start broadcasting again, trying to backpedal.

a) I could take the trite road and make the obligatory Blondie reference.

b) I could take the high road and hang out at here.

c) I could take the theological road and whack them in the head with Matthew 24:36 (in which Christ says something to the effect of "It's classified, only My Dad knows, and He didn't even tell Me!") until they saw the light.  (Camping's answer is even more bizarre than his theory that the world ends this weekend.  Camping claims that the passage in question was intended only in the context of the period of time during which God was in the churches, and since that (according to him) that period of history ended in 1988 (LOL WUT?  Even my derpshielding were insufficient to convince me to dig deep enough in the derp to figure out how he justifies that one), but anyways, he's convinced his followers that the important verse no longer applies, and that he was subsequently able to figure it out.  *boggle*

d) I could take the other theological road and point out that the Rupture as originally scheduled for July 5, 1998, has to wait until July 5, 8661, because Our Salesman might be able to talk a good game, but he's so infinitely fallible that he forgot he was reading the damn bar napkin upside down while drinking with the Xists.

e) I could take the lulzy road and get myself a bunch of inflatable dolls (and a few inflatable sheep for good measure), paint 'em up to look like they're clothed, put a circle of electroluminescent wire around their heads like a halo, and get a big tank of helium, a pickup truck, a big tarp, and go driving by the church at 6 pm local time...

Alas, I have neither the budget for e) nor the inclination, since I'll be busy with REDACTED.

The Zombiepocalypse/Rapture (technically, the same thing in the book of Revelation :) won't happen with an earthquake on May 21 at 6pm local time.  But the aliens will be here on May 22, 8pm EST.  The required equipment is almost identical to option d).  Hmm.  Anyways, if you're in a major city, watch the skies this weekend around sundown.  Imagine the looks on the fanatics' faces when they rush outside the churches to see strange lights in the skies and realize they're not going anywhere, and will fry with the rest of us!

Aw man, didn't know you lived near these people Foo.  But yeah, the guy predicted the end of the world is going to happen in 1998 but didn't.  Also the bible somewhere that no one knows the exact hour in when the world is going to end, especailly for God himself.  Will the end happen at our lifetime?  dunno really.  I think the Camping character could have better marketed the rapture if it was next year, with Dec 21, 2012 being the final destruction of the Earth.  ;D

Why the five month gap between the Rapture and the final wipe out?  Wouldn't He do it all in one go?

Isn't one thousand years for a day a bit arbitrary?  Time doesn't exist for God.  I mean, ontologically speaking...oh never mind.  I'll just get on the bandwagon.

THE END OF THE WORLD IS NIGH! REPENT THY SINS! REPENT! REPENT! REPENT!!!

Seventh Day Adventist is the predominant religion on the Pitcairn Islands (pop. 48).  Strange little society there.  Descendants of the Bounty mutineers.  Shallow gene pool.

Sorry 'bout that, Cat.  :-[  I have been posting from the road lately.  Hard to read everything on my iPhone.

Speaking about the rapture, back when I was a senior in high school, we had this one class and the topic turned to "what would you do if you knew the world was going to end tomorrow?"

Some of us kids said "I would go out on a big spending spree!" or "I would get on my knees and pray." or "I would be able to eat whatever I wanted without having to worry about getting fat."

Well except our classmate Maurice.  Maurice said "If I knew the world was going to end tomorrow, I'd go out and rape me some chicks."  :o

Our teacher quickly changed the subject.

Well technically speaking, if the murderer(s) repented right before they died they still have a chance of St Pete letting them inside the gates.

Not likely they repented but ya never know...  ;)

selective practice?  then again she obviously knew she wasn't the kind of person going to heaven so maybe the idea of living in a so called hell on earth was worse than the sin of committing murder.... makes it a sort of self fulfilling prophecy tho doesn't it? I mean the woman survived and now she will have to live in a hell of her own making - in prison with the knowledge that her kids and family will hate her forever...

There may less to this than meets the eye.  Listening to the newsperson I heard her say that the mother slit the throats and wrists of herself and her kids, wrapped them in blankets and drove to a friends house.  HE came home early and thwarted the plan.  I am wondering if maybe this is more of a getting back at the HE.

That's what we've been saying 1983, except that (a) "Bob" transposed 86 for 98, and (b) if you put a "19" in front of those two digits and realize he was too dumb to realize he was reading upside-down, it turns out that we're not waiting for 1998, we're waiting for The Rupture to happen in 8661.

Camping just went on his TV/radio network earlier tonight with "Well, I was wrong, May 21 was just a spirtual thing, God's merciful enough that he's not going to subject y'all to 5 months of hell before blowing you all up.  Pool's closed.  We'll take yer money, we won't waste it proselytizing, we'll just keep it.  Because the world ends in fire and brimstone in 5 months!"

tl;dr?  (on account of my semi-melted brain is kinda wishing it had just waited a day to get it off the 'net instead of mainlining the concentrated derp from Camping's two-hour-long (the poop I put up with to amuse you people) broadcast/press conference)...

...we get to laugh at him do it all over agin in five months!!  Hey, Harold!  EVEN JESUS IS LAUGHING AT YOU!

Of course, it might have happened, and we were just all partying too hard to notice:

It annoys me how much press this idiot got. Can't believe some people actually believed this, then again many Americans think the Earth is 6,000 years old and Jesus rode dinosaurs.  ::)

Camping's Theorem:

Camping taught that the world would end May 21, 2011 using the following reasoning:

According to Camping, the number five equals "atonement", the number ten equals "completeness", and the number seventeen equals "heaven".
Christ is said to have hung on the cross on April 1, 33 AD. The time between April 1, 33 AD and April 1, 2011 is 1,978 years.
If 1,978 is multiplied by 365.2422 days (the number of days in a solar year, not to be confused with the lunar year), the result is 722,449. (This, however, is a rounded number; taken precisely, the figure is 722,449.0716)
The time between April 1 and May 21 is 51 days.
    51 added to 722,449 is 722,500.
    (5 x 10 x 17)2 or (atonement x completeness x heaven)2 also equals 722,500.

17 = Heaven?

Camping's Theorem:

So there was this press conference, which was less like a press conference and more like one of Gaddafi's 90-minute rambling speeches.

I'll spare your brain and summarize:

http://oi51.tinypic.com/52i9kw.jpg

According to Camping:

1) Enough random flipping through the Bible to qualify for one square.  CHECK!
2) May 21 wasn't supposed to be a literal judgment day, it was a spiritual judgment day, which, umm, makes it invisible, but now that it's come and gone, nobody can be saved anymore, which is unfalsifiable.  CHECK!
3) October 21, the date we've always predicted for the end of the world, we all fry together!  CHECK!
4) Well, we took in all that money to warn people of the May 21 cutoff date.  Now that nobody can be saved anymore, there's no need to run expensive marketing campaigns, but we've still gotta pay the bills.  BINGO!

(And here's a blank bingo card to play along on October 22nd!)

Well, now that we've all been spiritually judged, God has already determined our eschatological destiny.  I guess we can do whatever TF we want!  Smoke, drink, fornicate, steal horses, see dirty movies, get sushi and not pay...limitless depravity!  Oh boy, this is going to be fun!

Yeah, as best as I can tell through his fumes of derp, he believes in predestination, but since you mentioned eschatology, and since this is a pop music board...

I thought you were going for a Blazing Saddles reference, but this isn't a Dominique Strauss-Kahn thread.  He's not weird enough.  Nor stupid enough.

To be pedantic, not paying for your sushi is OK.  It's forgetting to leave a tip that crosses the line.

Why 51?  Why not 32 (5+10+17)?  Did he choose 51 because of Area 51?  He thought we were going to be taken to heaven on the spaceship the government keeps there? ;D

Yeah, dude, you know what that's worth?

No.  I'm not going to immanentize the eschaton by subjecting us to Belinda Carlisle's 1987 bubblegum solo hit, and I'll condemn myself by making holocaust jokes all day long, but even I draw the line at dragging you all there with me by subjecting you to Ashley Tisdale's cover of it.

Just kidding.  Here's the mash-up.

DBG4wQCiBU0

Because hey, who wouldn't want to be mashed up between Belinda Carslile and Ashley Tisdale?

Birds of a feather DO flock together http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/05/goodnevil.gif http://www.inthe00s.com/smile/05/goodnevil.gif

Yes they do, yes they do.

aNc1Ru6e3FY

But (other than also wanting to be mashed up between Belinda Carslile and Ashley Tisdale) what does Carole Pope (and Rough Trade) have to do with this?

I mean, other than the fact that she hasn't stopped corruptingrocking out with her fellow Canucks in the 30+ years between "Birds of a Feather" (first pressed in 1977, video from live show ca. 1986), "High School Confidential" (live amateur recording dated 2005).

This is a pop culture board, after all :)
