Ron Paul comes in second... Since 1979, the winner or runner up has gone on to win the Iowa caucuses each time.

Be scared, be very scared... GWB won this thing when he was considered the long shot as well.

Bachmann wins Iowa straw poll as Perry looms

Yep, he's taking his ball and going home.

Speaking moments later on the same program, Mrs. Bachmann praised Mr. Pawlenty, but she said that the message from her victory in the straw poll was that voters are looking for “someone authentic” like her.
That's "authentic" as in "utterly batsheesh crazy", right?

But seriously, I hope she wins.  What could be better?

If someone faps to it, it's pr0n.  By the set defined by the intersection of Rule 34 and Poe's Law, you were looking at pr0n.

RON PA-never mind :)

To get serious for a few milliseconds... the difference between the Elephant Party and the Jackass Party is that the Jackass Party thinks that by electing enough Elephants, the world will become bad enough that everyone will realize the error of their ways and elect Jackasses 4 years later.

It doesn't work that way.  No political partisan ever realizes the error of his or her ways - when confronted with reality, the partisan redoubts his or her efforts against reality.  The Elephant Party keeps winning elections because they know that the worse the world gets (and the more compromises the Jackasses make), the fewer Jackasses will vote Jackass, but the more fervently the remaining Elephants will vote Elephant.  In a 50/50 electorate, the more moderates who get wholly-disgusted with the charade and abandon politics altogether, the lower the turnout - and the lower the turnout, the easier it is to manipulate the ever-shrinking pool of remaining potential voters.

Next year, I'll probably be the guy in the Cthulhu mask with a sign reading Bachmann/Palin 2012: Immanentize the Eschaton.  I'll go out for the lulz, but end up facetentacling when some blue-haired religious fundamentalist thanks me for my efforts in reminding the masses about the need to have a Fundie in power during Judgement Day.  (Worse, it'll be a Catholic fundamentalist.  Protestant fundamentalists don't even know how to pronounce "eschaton", let alone know what it means.)

Communist: What's mine is ours and what's yours is ours.
Libertarian: What's mine is mine and what's yours is yours.
Democrat: What's mine is mine and what's yours is ours.
Republican: What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine.

Sums it up.

Anarchist slogan: If voting changed anything, it would be illegal.

Skate punk in my town had that scrawled on his board next to the Jodie Foster's Army logo.  That was 25 years ago and I thought he was a glue-sniffing nihilist.  Maybe so...but it's making more sense than anything Rhodes Scholar Rachel Maddow is saying.  I voted for Obama and I feel stabbed in the back.  The Dems are good at telling us what's wrong with the Repubs, but then they go ahead and do the Republican bidding.  You take the devil's nickel, you do the devil's job.  I'd vote for a Jello Biafra/Ward Churchill ticket before I'd vote for Obama/Biden again.  I don't think I'm radical here either.  It should be like boxing.  We don't mind if the kid loses so long as he fights the good fight.  If we find out the kid pocketed dirty money and took a fall, his career is over.  Not so with the Dems.  We say, "Oh well, at least he's not as bad as so-and-so Republican."  I dunno.  The GOP has indeed done irrecoverable damage to our country, but at least I know what they stand for.  The Dems commit philosophical treason which shovels a damn sight more filth into the heart.

I imagine some of you have already heard about this, but I'll post it anyway.

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann offered a "happy birthday" message to the late singer Elvis Presley on Monday, even though August 16 is the anniversary of his death in 1977.

"Happy Birthday, Elvis!" Bachmann shouted from the stage at a campaign stop in the parking lot of The Beacon, a South Carolina drive-in restaurant famous for its fried food and sweet tea.
After her stump speech, the congresswoman from Minnesota told a group of reporters that she was happy to be in South Carolina "on the anniversary of Elvis Presley's death."

"He's still alive. He's alive in our hearts," Bachmann said.    Later, a campaign organizer who did not want to be identified said with a wink: "You celebrate Elvis because he never died."
Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi.

We don't exactly have that problem in Canada, generally the politicians fall into 2 categories: Either they are total a*holes or they make Al Gore seem terribly energetic and charismatic.

Guess which troublemaker is back in the news this week?

Apparently, it's "borderline sexual harassment" when you (ghost-)write a book that claims to have an answer to your position on gay marriage, but an interviewer asks you for that opinion -- on an interview that you yourself arranged as part of the PR campaign for your newly-(ghost-)written book!

But this is a thread about politicians photographed in ways that, when taken out of context, imply oral sex, so wouldn't...

Wait, I'm only supposed to do one of those things every 24 hours?

PROTIP: Republicans oughta try making it part of the party platform.  Masturbation's fine.  Inappropriate behavior's fine.  Both within the same 24 hour period is probably not a good idea given the second ("totally not gay!") Republican scandal (here's the first in case you missed it) from this week alone.

I think I see why the 'pub politicians are so vehemently against gay marriage.  They've spent their entire lives "fighting" against a "temptation" that they've "fought".  NTTAWWT.  But there is something wrong with that.  It's not having the ghey that's wrong, it's the hiding-in-the-closet-like-Tom-Cruise and lying to themselves and their wives in order to obtain political office that's wrong.  But because they see it as a temptation, they try to make it illegal, even though the rest of us are like "Gay marriage as a temptation?  I'm not even tempted by heterosexual marriage!"
