Subject: It's Hard All Over...

Thought I'd post this one in the Politics thread given all the Wall Street protest stuff going on.

Today my boss and I were headed to see a client and got caught up in traffic.  He had been drinking this big-ass cup of coffee and had to whiz something bad, so we stopped off at this furniture store that he frequents.  "Take a look at the furniture whilst I drain the monster, LB, maybe there's something you could use for your place, you never know".

So we walk in and there is all sorts of swag in there.  Hand-carved oak tables and cabinets, some sort of furniture piece upholstered in python skin.  Three stories of all sorts of expensive stuff that looks like it was taken out of Andrew Carnegie's castle.  Hell, I wanted to grab a cigar and a brandy snifter, and settle down in there.  A painting I saw for sale sort of interested me, but that sucker had a $25,000 price tag on it.  :o Just a little bit out of my range.  ;D

As we headed out, the boss said "come over some time on the weekend, you can get some nice stuff.  They really need cash so if you bring cash you can score a nice deal.  Damn... the owner made $50,000,000 in each of the past three years and HE'S BROKE."

Times are tough even for the millionaires...  :P

i've never had so much money. you guys need to quit whining and just get a better-paying job. the american dream is still alive! unless you're a socialist parasite, in which case why don't you just move to north anglia, or, um, poland. or whatever, one of those europey countries i keep hearing about. my point is, if you're poor, blame yourself!

teabagger method acting aside, though, it's odd that i, as a super-lib, was kinda scraping along during the clinton years, finally pulled out of it during the bush II years, and now during the obama aka bush III years, i'm actually making enough money to at least occasionally go to starbucks and buy a libbed-out (and awesome) scooter. it's funny how stories about economic hardship are largely statistical, but we make them anecdotal as though who we elected president directly affected us. often it does, more often it doesn't. i've been fired twice, once for good reason, once for trumped up BS, the first was under reagan, the second under bush I. i was laid off once, under clinton. none of these events had anything to do with who was in office. they had to do with me being a dooshbag, or working for a dooshbag.

that said, the chronic unemployment thing is a real problem. i have so many friends now who lost their job (sometimes, frankly, through fault of their own) or got laid off or got caught flat-footed by the 90s temp boom (i almost got caught in that trap myself) and now cannot get a second job for anything. and it's literally been years. that's scary stuff, man.

Something occurred to me this afternoon.  The Right is fond of saying, "No poor person ever gave me a job."

Well, sometimes the Job Creators are flat broke -- like your furniture store guy.  He'll give his salesmen the boot on xmas even with a turkey and an Andrew Carnegie end table of their choice!
::)
