Now that it's the 2010s, many expect a wave of late 80s/mid 90s nostalgia--similar to how there was a wave of late 70s/mid 80s nostalgia in the 00s, a wave of late 60s/mid 70s nostalgia in the 90s etc. The mullet was a hairstyle, that while worn since the 70s, hit it's ''peak'' of popularity or mainstream appeal in the late 80s to approximately 1995 or 1996 at most. Do you think this hairstyle will re-appear in the 2010s in some form? After all, in the early/mid 90s, long sideburns (which were cool in the 70s but thought of as ridiculous in the 80s) were popular again, as were bell bottoms which were similarily popular in the 70s but reviled in the 80s. The mullet in the '00s was/is the equivalent, imo, to long sideburns in the 80s--Reviled and hated. Similar to mustaches, huge in the 70s amongst men and are now--at least began to in '08/'09, have a comeback after being loathed since the 90s.
It's a pretty easy style to maintain and is easier and can, if done properly, appear more professional than having truly long hair. It can be short enough in the front not to fall in one's face, which is especially tedious if one has a job which requires them to look professional or if hair in the face would interefere with one's job--from the front it can appear to be an ordinary business-y hair cut, while long enough in the sides and back to maintain 'long' hair--for the aesthethic purpose, lifestyle or statement for which men wear their hair long to begin with.

I'm not talking about the outrageous or even ''rednecky mullets'' which were worn by Billy Ray Cyrus, or something extreme like a skullet or anything, but something simple, sort of what I had back in 1996 and what my dad had most of the 90s (1991-1996)

I once read in TV Guide that actor Richard Dean Anderson was the only guy on television ever to look good in a mullet.
I tend to agree, and I'll be first in line at the box office if there's ever a MacGyver movie.

But otherwise, mullets should be outlawed.

That's more "costume" than "style."  It like asking when KISS makeup will come back in fashion. Only one guy in the band wore the AFOS 'do:  Mike Score.  He only wore it in performance and photo sessions.  Furthermore, he only went with the that hairdo for about two years.  You can imagine how high-maintenance it was.  I tried, but my hair wasn't long enough.  That's a lot of hairspray!
