Subject: Boner from Growing Pains Missing in Vancouver

Written By: LyricBoy on 02/21/10 at 3:00 pm

Andrew Koenig, who played the role of Boner on TV's Growing Pains sitcom, is reported missing in Vancouver BC, since somewhere around February 14 to 16.

Andrew's father is Walter Koenig, the dude who played Chekov in the Star Trek franchise.

Seriously, I read that he is suffering from depression, so lets hope nothing serious happened to him.

Yes, this thread's heading could have been phrased better!

Mind you, I'll wager more than enough people are clicking on it, for whatever reason!

As long as Boner isn't exposed too long, he should be alright.  ;D

Frank sitings?
???

Apparently, Koenig suffers from depression, so he might very well have taken his own life.  I sure hope that's not the case.  Either way, I hope they find him soon.

I also read in an article that a friend thinks he may have gone off to live in the wild, that he is an outdoorsy type of guy.  I hope this is true.  The article also stated that he cleaned out his apartment before he left so either way it was something he had planned.

I just read that his parents were in Vancouver and were at a studio where they'd be guests on the Larry King show.

But at the last minute they had to leave.  :-\\

That was last night and I have not read any new stories on this, so it appears that they did not find a stiff.

I saw bits of a press conference the parents made from Vancouver. It must be so difficult for them right now.

It sounds even to this day incongruous to me, but my Father had a nickname that was another way of saying "boner".

If you knew my Dad you would never believe that he'd tolerate a nickname like that but he did. Even my Mom called him by that name as a term of endearment (but it was actually conceived as a mocking of our last name by his work buddies).

Even now... years later... I can't figure that out.  If anybody called me that, they'd be carrying their own "boner" in their lunch box.  :-\\

This is really sad news, indeed. When I heard about it, I was shocked. I expected the worse, but when my fears were confirmed, I was suprised, and now devastated.

My thoughts and prayers, go out to his friends and family, at this time.

Rest in peace, Andrew.

Maybe Andrew was depressed was because he wasn't as popular as he was on Growing Pains,he was only famous because of his name "Boner" and after that, most likely couldn't look for more work.

I had a sinking feeling he had taken his own life rather than "gone missing."  Depression is a terrible affliction.  I have peered over that edge many times myself.  It's no place I'd wish anyone to be.

It's not that easy, Howard.  People suffering from depression don't see a way out.  It is a mental issue and some of them can't work it out themselves.  They don't all realize they can get help and there are some that probably don't go for help because of the stigma.  It is a sad situation all around.

She's right Howard.
And there are symptoms you can recognize. Withdrawing from people, selling or giving away your things/possessions. Lack of interest in just about anything, wanting to stay in bed all day. Can't face the day. Like Maxwell Smart said, depression is a terrible affliction.
It happens to people. It can happen to just about anyone.

Nobody knows what causes depression, it is in the brain.  I don't think the character name had anything to do with it.

Some nature, some nurture.  Both my parents have it.  I've battled it my entire life.  It runs in both sides of my family.  It pretty much destroyed my life, knocked down everything I tried to accomplish.  I finally turned to spirituality finding little comfort in secular philosophies.  The thing about depression is it doesn't necessarily abate with affirmative success in life.  My cousin also has it, and she's had a stellar career in business.  She seemed to "have it all" as they say, quite the opposite of me.  I did not know that she too had suicidal ideations nonetheless.  She found a lot of meaning in motherhood and I gather her symptoms have been quiescent over the past couple of years.

Hey Max,
Are you are to recognize the signs and symptoms when you fall into it, or as you fall into it? And do you have people you can talk to (although I know when you are in that state, you tend to withdraw from everything, everyone)

Frank and Howard,

Yes, it's dysthymia (chronic depression), which sometimes lapses into a major depressive episode, with comorbid anxiety disorder.  I marshal resources through meds, talk therapy, and the family members I can talk to.  There's some really scary economic stuff going on with my debt and unemployment as result of never being able to put a career in order while the American economy goes to ruin and the social safety net rots away.  One just copes the best one can.  The spirituality is a relatively new aspect for me.  I don't talk much about it because it is such a new arrival and I don't know what to make of it yet.  One thing that works for me runs counter to American pop culture:  I accept that I'm never going to be a happy man in this life.  That acceptance decreases expectations and increases peace of mind, believe it or not.

Thanks,

Max
