Subject: Young Artists for Haiti - Wavin' Flag

Written By: whistledog on 03/12/10 at 9:27 am

Wavin' Flag is a 2009 song by Canadian rap artist K'naan that reached #2 in Canada as well as #99 in the USA.  In support of relief for Haiti, K'naan has gathered a group of popular Canadian artists to re-record a new version that was released on March 12, 2010.  For those of you outside of Canada, you will recognize a few of the singers.

It's a great song, but I think they should have billed it as "Canadian Artists for Haiti" rather than "Young Artists" as you can see, some of these singers aren't exactly young ...

I like it better than WATW-25. Nice job by you Canucks.  :)

Only things I might have changed are to have alot more shots of the Maple Leaf.

Oh and yeah, they shoulda had Avril Lavigne tearing thru the set on a go-cart.  :P

If the song had incorporated beats, they probably would have used deadmau5 and maybe even James Doman and Tiga, though I don't think they'd be able to get deadmau5's giant mau5 head into the recording studio :D

As for Jon Lajoie, he is quite odd, so I think they made a good move not including him LOL

"Odd" is putting it mildly, I suppose. Purely by coincidence, I ran into one of his videos recently...and it wasn't "I Kill People". ;D

I just noticed something.  On this song, Justin Bieber sings the closing lyric.  On 'We Are the World 25', he sings the opening lyric.

The question isn't where Justin Bieber is, but where isn't Justin Bieber going to be?  He's only 16, and he's everywhere :o

His videos get so much views, it's gotten him comedy specials on TV

Wavin' Flag has debuted at #1 in Canada.  It is now a bigger success here than 'We Are the World 25', which peaked at #5 and fell out of the Top 40 last week

On a related note, the original Wavin' Flag by K'naan is currently at #8 in Canada

Yesterday evening while watching tv, this commercial caught my attention...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2l47qImTQ8

I think this is the original version, but it's too short to be sure. So maybe there's a chance 'Waving Flag' will chart here after all.

Further investigation tells me that "Wavin' Flag" is in fact the offical song for World Cup 2010.

It certainly is, yes.  It's The "Celebration Remix" of K'Naan's original.  I hope it does make noise overseas.  It's a great song that everyone should enjoy :)
