Subject: This Time Darwin Does Some Collateral Damage

Written By: LyricBoy on 07/03/10 at 7:37 am

Well the "Darwin effect" has struck in the DR Congo, but unfortunately some collateral damage was done whilst the gene pool was weeding itself.

http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/07/03/dr.congo.explosion/

Seems that an oil tanker truck flipped over and started spewing its cargo on the road.  Call 9-1-1?  Heck no, the locals start running up to the truck to collect the oil.  This was a big score.

One of these "site responders" approached the oil-soaked mess with a cigarette in his mouthhttp://www.inthe00s.com/smile/11/BangHead.gif

Next thing you know... BLAMMO.  220 people dead, including quite a few bystanders.  :-\\

I believe a similar situation occurred in South America a few years ago... might even be on the DA website.

PROTIP: If you're doing anything other than "running away in the other direction" while some guy wanders up to a leaking fuel truck with a lit cigarette in his mouth, you put yourself squarely in the sight's of Father Darwin's Evolver.  You're not collateral damage, you're fair game!

And the moral of the story is: Smoking is dangerous to your health!

Does the "collateral damage" count as passive smoking-related injury?

You'd think they might be able to spare some petrol for the scooter

When I was 10, I saw my mother's cousin David dying of lung cancer as a result of a heavy smoking habit.  He was 42.  If you want to scare a kid away from cigarettes, take him to the cancer ward!

I saw those too!  I learned two things from Larry Flynt of any value: Don't smoke cigarettes.  Don't get VD.*
I saw LF's pictorial comparison of a healthy lung versus a cancerous lung, and it totally horrified me.  There was no way I was gonna start smoking after seeing that.  Not to mention the blind lady with tertiary syphilis!

* for those under 40, VD is what they used to call STD's back in the sixties and seventies.  The term venereal disease has been phased out of the medical profession as they find the term unscientific.  Veneris is the Latin genitive from Venus, the Roman Goddess of Love, hence the adjectival "venereal."  What does that have to do with anything?  We used Greek and Latin words in medicine, but we don't adopt their mythology.  The term Sexually Transmitted Disease ( STD) was ushered in in the '80s.  I've also heard STI (infection sitting inf for disease).  Some find STI sounds more clinical than the vernacular STD.  They mean basically they same thing.

Reminds me of the scene in "The Great Waldo Pepper".  It is about the early barnstormers.  A guy crashes and is pinned under his airplane in a field of dried out wheat, he is alive but notices one of the guys who runs out to see has a lit cigarette, he starts yelling at him to put it out, you have to see what happens next, a bit more than you expect. That was a good movie.
